This document discusses the automation of the Bechdel-Wallace test using artificial intelligence. It describes the Bechdel-Wallace test, which evaluates whether a work of fiction features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. The project, called BechdelAI, aims to use AI tools like image recognition, natural language processing, and text analysis to automatically apply the Bechdel-Wallace test to movies and measure gender representation and inequalities in cinema. It outlines initial phases including collecting data from sources like IMDb and OpenSubtitles, visualizing gender breakdowns of casts and crews, analyzing movie posters, and studying relationships between characters based on age gaps.
AnalyZing Gender Stereotyping in Bollywood Movies.pptxmansi82315
The presence of gender stereotypes in many aspects of society is a well-known phenomenon. In this paper, we focus
on studying such stereotypes and bias in Hindi movie industry (Bollywood). We analyze movie plots and posters for
all movies released since 1970. The gender bias is detected
by semantic modeling of plots at inter-sentence and intrasentence level. Different features like occupation, introduction of cast in text, associated actions and descriptions are
captured to show the pervasiveness of gender bias and stereotype in movies. We derive a semantic graph and compute centrality of each character and observe similar bias there. We
also show that such bias is not applicable for movie posters
where females get equal importance even though their character has little or no impact on the movie plot. Furthermore,
we explore the movie trailers to estimate on-screen time for
males and females and also study the portrayal of emotions by
gender in them. The silver lining is that our system was able
to identify 30 movies over last 3 years where such stereotypes
were broken.
Violence Detection: Introducing a Machine Learning Based Novel Method Arindam Paul
Human Facial Expressions plays an important role for identifying human action or intention. Facial
expressions can represents any specific action of any person and the pattern of violent behavior of
any person strongly depends on the geographic region. Here we’ve designed an automated system
by using a Convolutional Neural Network which can detect weather a person have any intention to
commit any violence or not. Here we proposed a new method that can identify violence intensions or violent behavior of any person before executing violences more efficiently by using a very little data of facial expressions before executing violence or any violent tasks. Instead of using image features which is a time-consuming and faulty method we used an automated feature selector CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) model which can capture exact facial expressions for training and then can predict that target facial expressions more accurately. Here we used only the facial data of a specific geographic region which can represent the violent and before violence facial patterns of the people of whole region.

DESIGNING INCLUSIVE PRODUCTS

Studying gender diversity in software development teams/communities requires understanding gender of individual developers. In this talk I will provide an overview of different ways of asking developers about their gender as well as inferring gender information from the ways they present themselves and artefacts they create. We conclude by discussing limitations of the inference techniques and surveying concerns related to their application.

Unlocking the Potential: Data as a Medium for Design & JusticeJess Freaner
As a designer and data scientist, I work with data in service of meeting people’s needs. This data is inherently subjective, which is what makes it both an excellent medium for design and vulnerable to misuse. I’ll share what it means to design with data and how data science can contribute to and augment the design process. Once we see what’s exciting and newly possible, we’ll delve into why now, more than ever, human-centered design matters as we discuss ethics and the impact of AI designs on individuals, communities, and societies.

As electricity is difficult to store, it is crucial to strictly maintain the balance between production and consumption. The integration of intermittent renewable energies into the production mix has made the management of the balance more complex. However, access to near real-time data and communication with consumers via smart meters suggest demand response. Specifically, sending signals would encourage users to adjust their consumption according to the production of electricity. The algorithms used to select these signals must learn consumer reactions and optimize them while balancing exploration and exploitation. Various sequential or reinforcement learning approaches are being considered.
Online violence amplifies IRL discriminations, and the lack of diversity grows in a vicious circle. Understanding cyber-violence, its forms and mechanisms, can help us fight back. To process massive volumes of data, AI finally comes into play for good.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.
Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
