Women have higher plasma concentrations of androgens than estrogens, yet the role of androgens in physiological processes and diseases is not completely understood. High levels of androgens in women are associated with a negative cardiometabolic profile, whereas in men, low levels of androgens are associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular diseases.The biology behind androgens’ sex difference is not completely understood.
In this webinar, Dr. Yanes-Cardozo discusses two clinical situations that are associated with high levels of androgens. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), the most common endocrine disorder in reproductive-aged women, is associated with a modest elevation of plasma levels of androgens. In transmen individuals (female to male), plasma concentrations of androgens are elevated to achieve similar levels found in cisgender men and much higher than in PCOS women. The role that these two different plasma concentrations play in cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology remains unclear. Gaps and opportunities in basic research and clinical practice are highlighted.

While most patients were willing to improve their lifestyles, almost half lacked follow-up weight recording and many chose to follow-up with their provider rather than more intensive lifestyle programs, suggesting opportunities to better encourage intervention.

The report summarizes recommendations from the Citizens Environmental Advisory Committee and Public Health Advisory Committee on recreational fires in Minneapolis. The committees recommend: 1) strengthening education through various outreach methods on the fire ordinance; 2) revising the city code to ban recreational fires during air quality alert days; and 3) enhancing training for city staff on the ordinance. Current status updates note that most recommended education is already occurring and the fire department would be able to institute an air quality alert day ban through training operators and responders.

This document describes a study that aimed to classify a host's infection based on gene expression data. The study analyzed gene expression data from public databases for eight infectious diseases in humans. Support vector machines were used to build classification models for each disease and identify predictive genes. Genes predictive of a disease were submitted to enrichment analysis to determine biological functions significantly associated with each disease.

This project analyzed HIV-1 sequences from patients over time to study the impact of antiretroviral treatment on viral evolution. It found that protease diversity decreased over time, likely due to selection pressure from protease inhibitors. A support vector machine model using 10 nucleotides from the protease gene distinguished treated from untreated patients with high accuracy. Key regions around 180bp and 265bp in protease may contribute most to drug resistance.
Abstract
This study aimed to validate Minnesota's medical complexity tier measure for predicting care coordination utilization and identify how non-medical factors influence utilization. The researchers analyzed data on 610 HIV-positive patients who received case management services. On average, patients received 141 minutes of care coordination per month. A higher medical complexity tier was generally associated with higher utilization, but this effect decreased when controlling for demographic and socioeconomic variables. Lower education, home ownership, and limited English proficiency were associated with greater utilization of care coordination services.

This study analyzed care coordination data from over 600 HIV patients at a safety net clinic to better understand coordination needs. It found that current payment methods do not accurately reflect actual coordination time needed. Social factors like housing status, language barriers, unemployment, and literacy had a larger impact on coordination time than medical complexity. Patients who were institutionally housed, required interpreters, or were unemployed/disabled required significantly more coordination minutes. The study aims to help clinics better account for patient social needs in care coordination models.

This study used association rule mining and propensity score matching to quantify the effect of statin use on progression to diabetes in pre-diabetic patients. Association rule mining identified phenotypes associated with increased diabetes risk, including obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Propensity score matching found statins increased diabetes risk in certain pre-diabetic phenotypes by up to 76%, but decreased risk by 41% in patients treated for hyperlipidemia and hypertension. The results suggest the effect of statins on diabetes risk in pre-diabetes depends on patient characteristics and treatment of co-morbid conditions.

This summarizes a study that combines association rule mining and propensity score matching to identify subgroups of pre-diabetic patients where statin use has different effects on progression to diabetes. Association rule mining is used to discover phenotypes defined by risk factors. Within each phenotype, propensity score matching is applied to identify comparable statin-treated and untreated patient pairs. This allows estimating the relative risk of diabetes for statin users compared to non-users within each phenotype, accounting for confounding factors. The method was applied to a dataset of pre-diabetic patients to identify subgroups where statins had different effects on developing overt diabetes over 5 years.
