Last month, we were assigned this major study writing term paper. Our honorable course
instructor provided us a guideline for preparing this term paper. We followed this outline in a
very strict manner. The introductory part of the term paper includes the company profile of
Sheba.xyz and rest of the part is about how consumers changed their purchase pattern and what
are the challenges Sheba.xyz faces during this pandemic. Making of this report was not easy for

Introduction
The online service industry of Bangladesh has become a major revenue generating industry over
the years. According to the present context, due to Covid–19 pandemic, this industry has
emerged over the last decades and successfully contributed in the country’s GDP. The main
reason behind this growth of online service Industry in Bangladesh is the changing lifestyles of
the people and continuously trying to update with the latest fashion trend where online service
sector plays a very vital role. Due to this pandemic the movement restriction has also played a
vital role for consumers to
look for a digital platform for
fulfilling their day to day
needs. As a result, people are
taking more online services
and the digital industry is
rapidly booming over the last
decade specially this year of
2020 due to the pandemic.
Apart from satisfying
everyday basic needs also the
fashion needs of the general
people, online service-based
items from Bangladesh has become major export revenue as well. As a result of this rapid
growth of online service sector in Bangladesh, now people have more options while choosing the
online brands. Each day many new brands are launching and also Government is getting a good
amount of revenue from this sector. The NBR also mentioned that in the coming year the growth
of the online service industry of Bangladesh will be increased and as a result the end customers
will be more benefitted as they will be getting more options to choose from.
Now with mobile network and Smartphone penetration being an ever-increasing trend
everywhere, Sheba.xyz, the largest on demand service delivery platform has come up to the top
throughout the country. They have planned to up its game and triple its size by 2025 generating

more job and serving people throughout the country. Formed just six years ago, Sheba.xyz has
already turned into one of the most trusted service providers in the capital with its arsenal of over
50,000 skilled professionals. Initially the company only offered around 40 services but currently
the company is offering more than 100 services.
What is Covid19?
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is defined as illness caused by a novel coronavirus now
called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; formerly called 2019-
nCoV), which was first identified amid an outbreak of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City,
Hubei Province, China. It was initially reported to the WHO on December 31, 2019. On January
30, 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a global health emergency. On March 11,
2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, its first such designation since declaring
H1N1 influenza a pandemic in 2009.

Illness caused by SARS-CoV-2 was termed COVID-19 by the WHO, the acronym derived from
"coronavirus disease 2019. The name was chosen to avoid stigmatizing the virus's origins in
terms of populations, geography, or animal associations.
How Covid19 affected the economy?
Coronavirus has led to a volatile economy, but there are numerous other factors at play. The
initial outbreak of the coronavirus in China disrupted global supply chains. A record 3.28 million
Americans filed for unemployment benefits in the week ending March 21 as coronavirus-induced
layoffs surge. Even when the short-term effects end, the long-term economic impact will ripple
for years.

According to the forecast released by the Economist Intelligence Unit on 26 March, the global
economy is expected to contract by 2.2 per cent in 2020. These effects are expected to be more
exposed in major G20 economies, such as Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the US - all
countries that are major markets for Bangladesh's most vital tradable good readymade garments.
How Covid19 affected the companies?
The COVID-19 outbreak is likely to cause bankruptcy for many well-known brands in many
industries as consumers stay at home and economies are shut down. Employees are under
enormous financial pressure. Hospitality and travel are two of the biggest industries impacted by
COVID-19 because of travel cancellations, restaurant closures, and low consumer confidence.
Manufacturing and construction have largely held off on layoff decisions, but these industries
could suffer the strain as consumer demand drops. Airlines cut their workforce by 90%, and
tourism destinations are likely to see no profits in 2020. Furthermore, expos, conferences,
sporting events, and other large gatherings as well as cultural establishments such as galleries
and museums have been abruptly called off important industries like the car, truck, and
electronics industries have abruptly closed. Most small businesses lack the cash reserves to
weather a month-long interruption, and forecasts indicate more than 2 million workers could lose
their jobs in just one week as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Covid19 effects on Bangladesh
Since March 7, when Bangladesh announced its first confirmed cases of COVID-19, the number
of infections in the country has grown significantly. Coronavirus infections remained low
throughout March and it was only in April that the numbers began to surge. Going by statistics
relating to the number of infections, Bangladesh’s COVID-19 problem seems less serious,
especially when one considers the size of its population (163 million) and the larger number of
cases that other countries are grappling with. Bangladesh government was slow to respond to the
pandemic in the initial stages. It has since set up more testing facilities and quarantine centers
and is procuring testing kits and medical equipment from abroad and declared lockdown from
March 18. In spite of lockdown, since April 26, hundreds of garment factories in industrial belts
in Gazipur and Ashulia in the suburbs of the capital, Dhaka, have begun functioning. Pressure to
meet production deadlines from American and European garment brands and possible loss of
business to competitors have prompted factory owners to reopen manufacturing units. They will
be joined by millions more as people rush to factories in Dhaka and other cities from their homes
in villages on foot and in crowded vehicles to return to work. These crowds could emerge new
vectors of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated country and is witnessing rapid urbanization as
Dhaka has been declared as a mega city. Yet consumers are finding it difficult and time
consuming to locate a skilled and trusted service provider at the right time, while capable and
reliable service providers have difficulty rising above the crowd and attracting customers. For

households and businesses, Sheba is providing various services, where they can avail home
services and business solutions from a wide range of verified professional service providers.
By embarking with Sheba, service-oriented SMEs also create a new channel to reach out to
customers for their business. Almost any service provider that has a valid service business in
Dhaka can join on Sheba platform by registering on the Sheba manager app. The Sheba manager
app is the ERP solution through which the service providers can manage their customers,
monitor their resources and cash flow in their company as well as reach out to customers.
Service providers can also earn money through Sheba Bondhu (“Friend”) program by referring
their customers for other services to the Sheba platform generating leads for other SMEs.

Sheba platform gives the service-oriented SMEs access to value added services that customized
according to their data which are finance, compliance, sourcing, training etc. Service providers
get access to basic features in Sheba app and can get access to higher features and functions by
upgrading their Sheba Partner Status. There are three Sheba certifications for service providers.
They are:
Local Service Provider (LSP) – Basic identity verified.
Priority Service Provider (PSP) – Standard quality parameter verified.
Exclusive Service Provider (ESP)–Fully complied with Sheba prime standard.
The service providers can upgrade their Sheba certification from LSP to PSP to ESP based on
their performance, number of orders served through Sheba and service completion rates. The
higher the service providers certification, the lower the Sheba’s commission gets. For the added
features in the platform, the service provider pays a monthly subscription fee based on active
license. Sheba gives access to priority service providers to become exclusive service providers,
which require them to comply with Sheba prime standard and manage total business through
Sheba ERP solution. This exclusivity offers access to financial credit programs, growth
workshops, training and free phones with data plans to help grow their business.

Consumers Changed Purchasing Pattern
We all know the situation of the world now, and we have deemed this situation as the new
normal. Along with many other habits, consumers purchasing pattern has also changed vitally.
As social distancing has become the new normal due to Covid-19 pandemic, consumers are also
adapting in real time to the new environment and circumstances. The Covid-19 pandemic is
having a significant impact on every aspect of life, including how people shop. Retailers, and
business owners around the world are facing challenges, due to this changed consumer behavior.
To avoid meeting with people and maintain social distance, consumers have become dependent
in online businesses more for purchasing necessary products. Many online businesses have
gained lots of advantages, as well as faced many challenges due to changed consumer behavior.

We have conducted a survey among 25 Bangladeshi people, on consumers changed buying
pattern, the results of this survey are discussed below.
According to this survey, 83.3% people said that they have stopped going to shopping like
before, which indicates that Covid-19 has impacted the local stores and shopping malls heavily.
Due to safety concerns, people are avoiding going outside, especially in public places like
shopping malls, restaurants etc.
According to this survey, 92% people said that they have reduced their spending on luxurious
goods and only buying most important goods and services, which indicates that people are
saving more money due to uncertainty of the situation because of the pandemic.

Here, 75% people said that they have reduced their expenditure on shopping products, which
indicates that the businesses of this products are facing lots of problem.

    5 | Pa g e Covid19 effects on Bangladesh Since March 7, when Bangladesh announced its first confirmed cases of COVID-19, the number of infections in the country has grown significantly. Coronavirus infections remained low throughout March and it was only in April that the numbers began to surge. Going by statistics relating to the number of infections, Bangladesh’s COVID-19 problem seems less serious, especially when one considers the size of its population (163 million) and the larger number of cases that other countries are grappling with. Bangladesh government was slow to respond to the pandemic in the initial stages. It has since set up more testing facilities and quarantine centers and is procuring testing kits and medical equipment from abroad and declared lockdown from March 18. In spite of lockdown, since April 26, hundreds of garment factories in industrial belts in Gazipur and Ashulia in the suburbs of the capital, Dhaka, have begun functioning. Pressure to meet production deadlines from American and European garment brands and possible loss of business to competitors have prompted factory owners to reopen manufacturing units. They will be joined by millions more as people rush to factories in Dhaka and other cities from their homes in villages on foot and in crowded vehicles to return to work.
