Presentation to The Open University's Computers and Learning Research Group's June 2016 conference. This presentation describes the SALSA project which explores the value of location-triggering language learning out and about an urban area, using a combination of smartphones and bluetooth beacons. We report on the project's approach, its technologies, the app developed, and the responses of the participants, with key themes.

The tutorial aims to provide a practical guide to conduct mobile field studies based on the learning outcomes of the research I've been involved in while working as a Research Scientist in Telefonica Research, Barcelona. I cover how to design effective mobile field studies, the importance of mobile prototyping, the impact of various design choices on the study setup and deployment, how to engage participants and how to avoid ethical and legal issues. I've also tried to include listings of useful resources for those who are interested in conducting mobile field studies of their own.

The purpose of this exploratory case study was to explore what type of language learning opportunities teacher and students can create using cell phones and investigate the perceptions of students on the use of cell phones for learning activities.
Research on mobile learning has given much attention to (a) the affordances of mobility that mobile devices offer, and (b) how these devices are used in classroom learning. Less attention has been paid to how students/learners perceive and use mobile devices. This exploratory study focuses on developing an understanding of how undergraduate learners’ interpret learning using their smartphones, in particular learning that is not initiated by a teacher. The study used a qualitative grounded-theory approach to analyze data collected from 28 undergraduate learners in an introductory educational psychology course. Analysis of the data suggests that the learners’ perception of the phenomenon of learning with smartphones appears to have three properties: What is learned, why, and when. Each property can be further characterized along one or two dimensions. We see this study as being a first step towards identifying the nature of learning using mobile devices and its varying dimensions.
Mobile learning, also known as "m-learning", is a convenient, current day means of delivering informational content to learners using current mobile technology devices. With the fast emergence of mobile technology proliferating in modern society, m-learning has presented an opportunity to those in the e-learning field to establish and promote best practices with instructional design with special consideration for the concepts of human memory and literacy. Because of the screen size restrictions and means of everyday use of mobile devices, methods need to be developed to allow for smaller chunks of information to be delivered for better retention and promoting informational literacy.
This presentation will tie together how early efforts to create and promote literacy are tied to e-learning and how technology helped the evolution of that process, explain the basic concepts behind m-learning practices and instructional design, and provide evidence of efforts now being done to revise how m-learning is conducted on smart devices through current thought in the m-learning industry.

• Many participants only looked at brief sections of
the content at the trigger location. Vocabulary,
relevant phrases and pronunciation preferred for
learning in the moment at the location. Grammar
and dialogue tended to be studied away from the
location.

the scenario content before they encountered the
situation, not whilst they were in it.
• Social context: wanting to prepare for that situation

content if they need to exchange goods in future.

• It’s not about the beacons. Other technologies likely
to become available in future for location triggering.
• Learners started the field trial with a range of
learning strategies. Location-based triggers
influenced some of them to think about different
approaches for the future, esp. less experienced
learners. Others kept their original habits.
• Cultural sensitivities and social context influence the
use of mobile devices in public.
