تسبب إعلان منظمة الصحة العالمية عن انتشار وباء الفيروس التاجي (COVID-19) في أزمة عالمية، ولعل من أبرز آثار أزمة جائحة كورونا العالمية ما ترتب عليها من إغلاق المدارس في العام الدراسي (2019/2020)، وعدم السماح للطلاب بالذهاب إلى فصولهم الدراسية، وتوقف التعليم المدرسي، وصعوبة إجراء الاختبارات الفصلية والنهائية. حيث تسببت الجائحة في انقطاع (1.6) مليار طالب عن التعليم في (161) دولة، أي ما يقرب من (80%) من الطلاب الملتحقين بالمدارس على مستوى العالم، ووسط الصدمات الاقتصادية المزدوجة لجائحة كورونا وانهيار أسعار النفط في منطقة الشرق الأوسط أصبحت المنصات الرقمية أكثر أهمية لاقتصاد المنطقة، حيث أدى إغلاق الحياة العامة إلى زيادة الحاجة إلى الانتقال إلى حلول التعلم الرقمية والافتراضية والتعلم عن بعد لبناء المهارات وضمان استمرار عملية التعليم من خلال بناء مهارات تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصالات (البنك الدولي، 2020).
وانطلاقًا من الخطة الاستراتيجية للدولة المصرية متمثلة فى استراتيجية التنمية المستدامة مصر (2030)، والاستراتيجية القومية لتطوير التعليم قبل الجامعي (2014/2030)، والخطة متوسطة المدى (2018/2022) لوزراة التربية والتعليم والتعليم الفني؛ واستراتيجية الحكومة لتطوير التعليم العالى في مصر (2015/2030) نجد أن الدولة المصرية تولى اهتمامًا كبيرًا بتوظيف التكنولوجيا في العملية التعليمية، وفى المناهج الدراسية، وفى البرامج الجامعية؛ وظهر ذلك من خلال: استخدام المنصات الإلكترونية الجامعية، وتطبيق الاختبارات الإلكترونية، والتعليم الإلكترونى من خلال الانترنت، واستخدام أجهزة التابلت، ونظم إدارة التعلم المدرسية، والمنصات التعليمية، وبنك المعرفة المصرى.
