Development of Mobile Deformable Barrier (MDB) as a car surrogate
Software : HYPERMESH, LS-DYNA,HYPERGRAPH, LSPOST
Operating system : HPUX
Company : GM Tech center, Bangalore
Client : Crash& safety group, GM, North America

Description
Objective of this project is to develop the concept of Mobile Deformable Barrier which acts as a car
surrogate in car to truck compatibility studies. A midsize passenger car which represents the average car
fleet in US is considered for this study and finite element simulations were carried out with car-to-LTV
impacts. An MDB concept is then developed to represent the front end of the car by using honeycomb
blocks with various crush strengths, and compared its effectiveness with real car simulations. MDB is fine
tuned so that its response matches with the car response.

Research paper on the above work has been published in SAE conference April 2007

Client : Crash& safety group, GM, North America

Description
Objective of this project is to evaluate the various structural parameters like HOF (Height of Force), AHOF
(Average Height of force) and CV (Coefficient of variation) for impact of GMT305 LTV on Full width
deformable barrier and to correlate the simulation with the test results.

A full width rigid and deformable barrier (developed by TRL, UK) crash simulations have been carried out
to understand the crush behavior of the vehicle and to calculate HOF and CV which play important role in
improving the structural interaction. Changes are incorporated in the Full Width Deformable Barrier
received from TRL to control the intrusions between the first and second layers of the deformable barrier.
A Secondary Energy Absorbing Structure is added to the lower part of the vehicle front rails of LTV to
have the good structural interaction with the struck vehicle (car) and studied the effect of it.

Finite Element Model Updating for Dynamic Mechanical structutres
Software                   : C, C++, I-DEAS, ICATS, MATLAB
Network OS : Windows NT 4.0
Institute : IIT Delhi

Description:
This project involves finding out the optimum system parameters required in machine tools to
improve dynamic characteristics. It deals with the finite element analysis of machine structure
using developed codes in C, C++ & MATLAB. Experimentation is carried out on the structure
and obtained FRF’s are analysed using Experimental modal analysis techniques. Finite element
model of the structure is updated on the strength of experimental results by using updating
techniques (Direct and Iterative). A software is developed to compare both theoretical and
experimental results and to update the theoretical model of the structure. Two mass modifications
on the structure have been tried by conducting experimentation, and the obtained experimental
results are compared with both FE and Updated models. Finally it has been concluded that
updated model results are closely matching with the experimental results after modification.

Projects handled Title Correlation of Frontal Occupant analysis for Scorpio Software : HYPERMESH, LS-DYNA971 r4.2, HYPERGRAPH, LSPOST Operating system : HPUX Company : IDAM, M&M Client : IDAM, M&M Description The Main objective of this project is to develop and correlate the occupant injuries with the tests conducted as per FMVSS 208 regulation. FTSS HIII dummies were used in the simulation to predict the injuries. Both belted and un belted configurations were simulated and correlated with the test results. Steering column collapse was modeled to reduce the driver head & chest injuries. The simulation results show 80% correlation with test results. Knee bolster design improvement was done to reduce the femur forces. Madymo coupling analysis has been done and compared the results with the FTSS dummies. Title Clean sheet Delta -2 Architecture development Software : HYPERMESH, LS-DYNA,HYPERGRAPH, LSPOST Operating system : HPUX Company : GM Tech center, Bangalore Client : Crash& safety group, GM SAAB, Sweeden Description The Main goal of this project is to Develop a clean sheet architecture that will support General Motors global small car vehicle bandwidth The main goal is subdivided into several other objectives - optimize structural efficiency for a minimum mass multi-material solution, develops optimal load paths, expanding the architectural bandwidth (i.e., the range of vehicle configurations using the same load path configuration). The configurations considered are sedan, coupe and monocab at a minimum with the potential inclusion of a convertible. Design will include optimal gage, section size and material choice of the vehicles. Architecture will have to meet 5 Star safety ratings, NA and Euro Safety requirements in Frontal side and rear crashes. Title : Development of Mobile Deformable Barrier (MDB) as a car surrogate Software : HYPERMESH, LS-DYNA,HYPERGRAPH, LSPOST Operating system : HPUX Company : GM Tech center, Bangalore Client : Crash& safety group, GM, North America Description Objective of this project is to develop the concept of Mobile Deformable Barrier which acts as a car surrogate in car to truck compatibility studies. A midsize passenger car which represents the average car fleet in US is considered for this study and finite element simulations were carried out with car-to-LTV impacts. An MDB concept is then developed to represent the front end of the car by using honeycomb blocks with various crush strengths, and compared its effectiveness with real car simulations. MDB is fine tuned so that its response matches with the car response. Research paper on the above work has been published in SAE conference April 2007 CURRICULAM VITAE OF P.Sai Rama Narayana page - 3/5

Sliprings are connected to the seatbelts at particular locations. Loads are given to the blocks and to the back panel as per the ECER14 regulation (13.5KN+20% safety, 20Mg+20% safety for SBA analsysis; 6.4KN+20% safety at each belt for ISOFIX analysis as per CMVSS210 regulation) The analysis is carried out in LSDYNA 960d for 200ms The results are analysed in LS-POST against the failure criteria and recommendations are suggested. Title: NISSAN 4way & 2way Driver Seat Modeling & Analysis for frontal crash, rear crash with 95% dummy and luggage retention analysis as per ECER17. Software : HYPERMESH, MEDINA, LS-DYNA, LSPOST Operating system : UNIX Company : TATA Jhonson Controls ltd Client : Johnson Controls , Burschied, GERMANY Description Objective of this analysis is to test the NISSAN 4way and 2way seats for frontal crash and rear crash and luggage retention analysis. The modeling is done in HYPERMESH and MEDINA as per the requirements of NISSAN with minimum characterestic length is equal to 4.5mm. The complete seat is assembled with 1d connections as per the JCI burchied practices. Normal mode analysis is done in ABAQUS to check the connectivity of the structure and to determine the rigidbody modes. 95% dummy is placed on the seat with Hpoint of the seat matching with the dummy. Contacts are defined in LSDYNA for the system and forward and rearward crash pulses are given to the floor of the seat. For 95% dummy track positions are adjusted to the rearmost down position. The analysis is carried out in LSDYNA 960 d for 150ms. The results are analysed against the failure criteria in LSPOST and different recommendations are made. Description Objective of this analysis is to test the 60/40% bench seat for FMVSS207/210 & 225 loads using LS- DYNA. FMVSS 207/210 standard establishes requirements for seats and seat beltassembly to insure their proper location for effective occupant restraint and to reduce the likelihood of their failure by forces acting on them by the result of vehicle impact. FMVSS 225 standard establishes requirement for child restraint anchorage systems to ensure their proper location and strength for the effective securing of child restraints. These standards applies to passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses. Research Project: Title : Finite Element Model Updating for Dynamic Mechanical structutres Software : C, C++, I-DEAS, ICATS, MATLAB Network OS : Windows NT 4.0 Institute : IIT Delhi Description: This project involves finding out the optimum system parameters required in machine tools to improve dynamic characteristics. It deals with the finite element analysis of machine structure using developed codes in C, C++ & MATLAB. Experimentation is carried out on the structure and obtained FRF’s are analysed using Experimental modal analysis techniques. Finite element model of the structure is updated on the strength of experimental results by using updating techniques (Direct and Iterative). A software is developed to compare both theoretical and experimental results and to update the theoretical model of the structure. Two mass modifications on the structure have been tried by conducting experimentation, and the obtained experimental results are compared with both FE and Updated models. Finally it has been concluded that updated model results are closely matching with the experimental results after modification.
