Introduction
• Construction work is a hazardous land-based job.
Some construction site jobs include; building houses,
roads, tree forts, workplaces and repair and maintain
infrastructures. This work includes many hazardous
task and conditions such as working with height,
excavation, noise, dust, power tools and equipment.
The most common fatalities are caused by the fatal
four: falls, being struck by an object, electrocutions,
and being caught in between two objects.
Construction work has been increasing in developing
and undeveloped countries over the past few years.
With an increase in this type of work occupational
fatalities have increased. Occupational fatalities are
individuals who die while on the job or performing
work related tasks. Within the field of construction it
is important to have safe construction sites.
2
Introduction
3
Experts in the field of construction safety have recognised the need of adhering
to safety regulations to the letter. As a result of this assessment, personnel in the
construction industry will be able to better understand and regulate the safety of
their job. The researchers' interest in safety management stems from their desire
to identify potential risks in the workplace.
The goal of safety administration is to make the workplace as safe as possible.
Currently, the Civil Engineering profession places a greater focus on safety
management. Changes in people's perceptions of the dangers of the construction
sector are the goal of this research.
Major causes
of accidents
• Scaffold accidents
• Accident due to slip and
fall
• Crane accidents
• Ladder accidents
• Electrical accidents
4
Scaffolding
• Strong scaffolding and centering
done to support the workers such that
it can take the load of the workers
and materials while at work.
• Lacing and bracing are to hold the
position of the scaffold
• the type of scaffold selected depends
on the strength of the soil.
• Scaffolding
5
Falling from
height
• No provision of safety
harness
• Faulty design of structure
• Use of damaged stairs
• Use of unsuitable stairs
• Improper position of stairs
6
Crane
accidents
• Crane accidents
frequently involve workers
getting hit by the crane's
equipment, the load being
lifted, or by something
else. Most of the victims
in these cases are the
crane's riggers. Many of
these accidents involve
loads that are uneven or
that have strange weight
distributions.
7
Electric
accidents
• Contact with electricity current due to faulty conductor
• Use of electrical equipment's that are damaged or modified
• No earthling
• No provision of suitable PPE
8
Procedure for safety
measure
• Safety plan
• Safety training and meetings
• First aid and medical arrangements
• Management policy
9
Accidents control measurements
• Rules and recommendations of OSHA
• Learn how to be safe
• Get Visibly Involved
• Providing Incentives
• Formal Inspections
• Safety meetings regularly
• Safety education
• Research findings
• Regular safety meetings
• Awareness should be stressed by management
10
Benefits of
safety
program
• • Reduced workers’ compensation claims
• • Reduced expenses related to injuries and illnesses
• • Lower employee complaints
• • Increased productivity
• • Reduction of hidden cost
• • Reduced insurance cost
However, many managers are unaware of the financial
ramifications of a mishap. Insurance premiums for
workers' compensation are calculated depending on the
number of accidents that occur at a certain company.
Accident rates have an impact on public liability, property
damage, and equipment insurance premiums.
11
• It is estimated that construction
workers are responsible for around
11 percent of all occupational
injuries and 20 percent of all
occupational deaths. Accidents cost
a lot of money. However, a
contractor's attention to safety
should be focused on more than
just the bottom line.
Importance
of safety
12
• OSHA Employers are obliged by OSHA to retain
detailed records of all work-related fatalities, injuries,
and diseases. There is no need to document small
injuries that may be treated with first aid. When an
injury requires medical care, loss of consciousness, or
limits on work or movement, it must be documented.
Accidents that result in the death of at least one person
or the hospitalization of five or more workers must be
reported to OSHA within 48 hours. OSHA For the most
part, only management may be punished for safety
infractions under OSHA, which is unfair. Only the firm
and its management can be held liable for safety
violations if an employee deliberately breaks both
OSHA and company laws. As a result, the only way
management can enforce safety laws is to penalize or
remove employees who engage in risky behavior.
OSHA(Occupational
Safety and Health
Administration).
13
• OSHA For the most part, only management may be
punished for safety infractions under OSHA, which is
unfair. Only the firm and its management can be held
liable for safety violations if an employee deliberately
breaks both OSHA and company laws. Management
may only enforce safety laws by disciplining or firing
employees who commit risky behaviors..
• OSHA's construction safety requirements are heavily
influenced by industry-developed safety standards.
Rollover protection (ROPS), seat belts, backup alarms,
enhanced brake systems, and guards for moving parts
are a few of the equipment safety requirements.
Equipment operators and other personnel are likewise
subject to noise limits.
OSHA
14
Conclusion
• Accidents in the construction industry are costly
in terms of human life and economy
• Safety management reduce cost and increase
productivity
• Reduction in accidents and associated costs are
direct benefits to the construction industry
• accident prevention strategy such as mitigating
any
• root potential factors to lead to fall accidents
while designating who will be fined if they fail
to comply
• with their responsibility related to the identified
variables under various factors.
