Only 5% of rare diseases have an approved drug therapy. Only 60% of orphan medicines approved by the US FDA or EU EMA are approved in Canada, and often many months or years later. Only 34% of approved orphan medicines are funded by Canadian public drug plans. Under the BEST of circumstances, only 10% of eligible patients get access to an approved medicine. And worldwide, only 1% of rare disease patients will receive an approved drug. Most without treatment are children. How can Canada’s Rare Disease Drug Strategy assure all eligible Canadian patients get access to the most appropriate medicine for their individual needs?
Two panels will be tasked to consider a “Canada Leading the Way” strategic pharmaceutic framework that (1) attracts early investment in R&D; (2) reduces and manages risk for early adoption of innovative therapies; and (3) leads to a sustained culture of collaboration and trust among all stakeholders, including regulators, industry, payers, and patients. In particular, what has Canada learned from addressing COVID, for example, in terms of screening, diagnosis, drug repurposing, vaccine procurement, timely intervention, and monitoring, that can apply directly to rare disease therapies?

HVP Country Node: Argentina - Angela Solano
1) Argentina is working to establish a HVP Country Node by the end of 2016 to collect and share genetic data related to hereditary cancers.
2) The node would be led by a steering committee and have committees for advising and education. Funding would come from the national government and research council.
3) Argentina already has a national data repository for BRCA1/2 variants from over 1,200 individuals that will be available online in July 2016. They are working on policies for data collection, access, and ownership.
4) Over the next 12 months, the node aims to formalize links with genetic societies, interact with ministries, and address challenges in collecting nationwide data and obtaining grants.

Canada's Chemicals Management Plan aims to reduce risks from chemicals to Canadians and the environment. Substances are assessed for harm and actions are taken to control risks. The government committed to developing a long-term strategy to systematically assess the effectiveness of actions controlling toxic substances. Measuring performance establishes indicators, collects data on substance levels, evaluates current conditions against baselines, and identifies needed monitoring and follow up actions. Challenges include inconsistent data, appropriate population representation, timing of data availability, and resource requirements. HVP Country Node: Argentina - Angela Solano
1) Argentina is working to establish a HVP Country Node by the end of 2016 to collect and share genetic data related to hereditary cancers.
2) The node would be led by a steering committee and have committees for advising and education. Funding would come from the national government and research council.
3) Argentina already has a national data repository for BRCA1/2 variants from over 1,200 individuals that will be available online in July 2016. They are working on policies for data collection, access, and ownership.
4) Over the next 12 months, the node aims to formalize links with genetic societies, interact with ministries, and address challenges in collecting nationwide data and obtaining grants.

Stakeholders used these maps to guide education and funding decisions. Sustaining these tools requires ongoing funding and expanding included data sources.
