     Definitional: NAICS vs. SOC

     Self-employment

     Analyze manufacturers directories for companies that are
      using creativity as the basis of their competitiveness
     Collect directories of arts guilds

     Conduct surveys of local artists and design manufacturers


  Analyzing your economy
     What normally non-creative sectors in your economy really
      have significant creative elements?
Methods

  Define the base set of “always creative” sectors by NAICS
  Define creative workers (as defined by skills)
  Define what else may be creative within your economy
  Examine staffing patterns in non-creative industries to
   estimate the size of creative employment in these sectors
  Conduct additional research to “ground-truth” the data
  Adjust the standard LMI data to include self-employment
   and other creative employment data gathered.
The Reality

  You can do an analysis of the creative
   economy that solely relies on a fixed cookie-
   cutter methodology
  But if you do it will be wrong and will probably
   underestimate its size
  There is no black box and there is no substitute
   for creativity and getting dirt under your
   fingernails

Methods 12   Define the base set of “always creative” sectors by NAICS   Define creative workers (as defined by skills)   Define what else may be creative within your economy   Examine staffing patterns in non-creative industries to estimate the size of creative employment in these sectors   Conduct additional research to “ground-truth” the data   Adjust the standard LMI data to include self-employment and other creative employment data gathered.

The Reality 13   You can do an analysis of the creative economy that solely relies on a fixed cookie- cutter methodology   But if you do it will be wrong and will probably underestimate its size   There is no black box and there is no substitute for creativity and getting dirt under your fingernails
