The school library plays a key role in students' education and lifelong learning. It provides students with resources to support all areas of study and exposes them to materials at different levels of difficulty. The library helps develop students' imagination and enables them to become responsible citizens. Selecting appropriate resources for the library is important so that it can inspire students, meet their information needs, and foster a love of learning. Regular library periods are necessary so students can make effective use of the library.

Women's Empowerment through Buckwheat Farming Project Completion Report 2016-18 Hashoo Foundation USA
Hashoo Foundation introduced a new economic development initiative in the remote areas of Gilgit-Baltistan to empower women through buckwheat farming. The project was very successful and had a very positive response from the 200 farmers beneficiaries in terms of ownership, acceptance, and impact in their local communities. Initially, Hashoo Foundation estimated a production of 10,000 kgs (22,000 lbs) from the original 1,000 kgs (2,200 lbs) of certified buckwheat seeds distributed to the women farmers for cultivation. Five months later, the actual production was 13,000 kgs (28,600 lbs). This success was a result of the women farmers’ commitment and dedication.
Hashoo Foundation retained 1,200 kgs (2,640 lbs) of the buckwheat seeds collected to replicate the project in other areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and distributed the other 11,800 kgs (25,960 lbs) of buckwheat seeds to the 200 women farmers. The farmers are projected to earn an income of approximately PKRs. 2,950,000 (US $29,208) from the sale of their buckwheat yield at a rate of PKRs. 250 (US $2.27) per kg of buckwheat. This income will have an indirect impact on 1,400 of their family members.
The continued expansion of the buckwheat farming to other areas in Gilgit-Baltistan could significantly contribute to alleviating the poverty of these underprivileged communities which are usually neglected and get no attention from development agencies and local governments. There is no doubt that this project will provide the women living in these remote male-dominated societies an opportunity for improving their quality of life and breaking the vicious cycle of generational poverty.

Resultantly, HF received US $9,970 from UST SEP, with US $3,000 on 21st February 2013, and US $3,000 on 25th March 2015, respectively as an additional amount, thereby, making a total loan of amount US $15,970 for interest free RMCL.
The impact of this project was positive, with 40 women beekeepers benefited from the project by producing 2,400 Kg of honey to date. With the increase in the overall household income of the beneficiaries by 39%, 140 children had access to basic education and better nutrition. The CED project helped promote three of the United Nations millennium Goals (UN MDGs): eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education and promote gender and women empowerment.
This document provides an overview of the Credit & Enterprise Development (CED) project for women beekeepers in Northern Pakistan implemented by Hashoo Foundation from 2010-2014. The project aimed to empower women economically by providing training, beehives, and microloans to establish honey bee farming businesses. Over 1,100 women received training and support through this project, generating over 90,000kg of honey and positively impacting over 8,500 family members through increased income spent on education, nutrition, and healthcare. Key lessons learned included the importance of value chain development and collective organization of beekeepers. The project helped establish sustainable honey bee farming and microfinance programs to support economic opportunities for women in remote areas of Northern Pakistan.

Pakistan's commitment towards the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs)'Education For All'
(EFA) is a challenge in a scenario with so many
impediments in the educational system. Indeed,
education is suffering from resource constraints,
because of existence of under-privileged society.
It is believed that greater education opportunities
and related resources will empower the younger
generation to acquire quality education with
diversepoolofknowledge.
Keeping in consideration the importance of
education and holistic improvement of
communities, Hashoo Foundation (HF) formed a
partnership with Rotary Books for the World
program and Rotary Clubs in Pakistan to
contribute in improving literacy efforts through
the donation of books to educational institutions,
learning centers, students, youth and
communities across Pakistan. Books and
educational material help students increase
knowledge and help develop modern society
through knowledge sharing and learning from
intellectuals living aroundthe world.
Education through reading is a sustainable and
long term learning process frequently associated
with experiences of students they attained during

their educational journey. Reading books on
diverse themes and subjects has a great
importance because this is the way to expand
students' knowledge and groom up their vision
andskillstowardsthe worldlyaffairs.
In 2014, Rotary Books for the World and The
Second Wind Foundation donated two more
containers (40 feet each) filled with 103,873 books
and educational materials to help improve
literacy efforts in Pakistan. Hashoo Foundation,
Rotary Club of Islamabad Margalla and Rotary
Club Rawalpindi received the books ranging from
primary to higher education levels. The books and
valuable research material were distributed to 115
educational institutions, organizations, libraries
andcommunityreadingrooms.
The books are a charity donation by USA and
Canadian citizens to aid literacy efforts in
Pakistan. The Second Wind Foundation and
Rotary Books for the World is the network by
which these donations are transferred from the
donors to the Hashoo Foundation and the Rotary
Clubs of Islamabad Margalla and Rawalpindi,
which agreed to distribute the books to the
selected schools and institutions across Pakistan
without charges.

Second Wind Foundation signed a Memorandum
of Understanding (MoU) with Hashoo
Foundation and Rotary Club of Islamabad
Margalla in an effort to join forces to provide
needed books to girls and boys in Pakistan. This
partnership was announced during the Rotary
Books for the World Booklegger Summit in
Houston. Under this program, books and
educational materials are donated and shipped
without charges.
The Second Wind Foundation has the
administrative and financial responsibility for the
Rotary Books for the World program. Hashoo
Foundation, Rotary Club of Islamabad Margalla
and Rotary Club Rawalpindi are referred to as the
Distributor and have agreed to distribute the
donated resources to the selected educational
institutions and organizations in Pakistan free of
charge.
Following are the steps taken by HF in-order to
distribute the books:
The books donated by Rotary range from ECD to
higher educational level. In order to deliver these
books to the institutions and organizations, it is
essential to sort out the books and categorize them

“Reception of the valuable gifts of informative books
and reading materials for the students and teachers
will definitely increase their capacity to compete in
the modern society. It will also be helpful for the
students to be well prepared for examination and
other opportunities in the future. This initiative
from Rotary Books of the World will go a long way
in embellishing a well-mannered, disciplined and
knowledgeablesociety.”
“The impact of this noble cause would be far
reaching. A generous contribution from Rotary
Books for the World program and Hashoo
Foundation can change someone's life forever. The
books and other educational materials will be
fruitful in terms of getting more and more public
attentions and energy towards education, aside
from promoting rational and critical thinking.
Ultimately it will pose a positive impact on the
development ofsociety.”
Principal of the Pearl School and College, Booni
Chitral exclaimed:
The head of Aisha Lasani Model School
Rawalpindistated:
“A more conducive environment of learning and
teaching could be advanced, based on the precious
books Rotary Books for the World and that Hashoo
Foundation have gifted to my school and college.
This will trigger interest in reading and hence an
environment of teaching and learning could be
expanded. Students' passion to sit in the library
and undertake research work will be a positive
outcome of this gracious cooperation, for which my
staffandI amreallythankful.”
“Students at different educational levels will be
benefitted from the educational materials and books
received from Hashoo Foundation and Rotary
books. This great literary help will go into
consolidating the academic foundation of children
inmyinstitution.”

According to the staff in-charge of Student
Affairs:
“Students at professional level will receive proper
guidance, information and education in areas of
finance, accounting, risk management and
governance. The books we received from Hashoo
Foundation and Rotary books will also greatly help
us in academic as well as professional activities of
our college particularly in the field of medical
science, engineering andgeneral education.”
State Development Organization (SDO) Pakistan,
a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK)basedNGO said:
“The donation of books from Rotary Books for the
World, Hashoo Foundation and Rotary Clubs will
increase the worth and capacity of the
organizational Resource Center Swat and will
benefit students by sparking reading habit amongst
them.” It was further narrated that the books will be
helpful in promoting understanding towards
economic empowerment, peace and prosperity in
the longrun.”
4. Case Studies
4.1. Case Study 1: The Rise International School
System, Barakaho Islamabad
“The literacy rate in the surrounding is high.
Nonetheless, we are focusing on improving the
quality of knowledge and information by utilizing
all resources available at the school, where there are
500 students at present. The enrolment of students
from vulnerable families is about 80%, we enroll the
ones who cannot afford to buy books and reading
materials. The Books donated by Rotary Books for
the World, Hashoo Foundation and Rotary Clubs
havemadethings easier forthese students.”
“The school was in developing phase, hereafter
gives great importance to the availability of
educationalmaterials”.
The Rise International School Barakaho is a
leading private school in the suburbs of
Islamabad, working with a vision to serve the
underprivileged communities. Since its
establishment, the school has maintained
remarkable academic record, which has been
helpful in reaching out to the majority of
populationinBarakaho.
Mr. Muhammad Arshad, principal of the School
said:
TheManagementofthe schooladmittedthat:
After identifying the need of a library, the school
administration approached Hashoo Foundation,
requesting for donation of Rotary books to the
library, which, as they put it “will enable them to
make the school a real hub of information and
standard education.” Today, Rise International
Public School has a library consisting of more than
2,000 books.
Explaining the impact of books on the academic
well being of the school, Mr. Muhammad Arshad
said:
Reflectionfromteachersofthe sameschool:
“These books will play a critical role in broadening
the vision of students aside from deepening their
thought and reconstruction of information. Besides
studying the books to enrich their information,
students and teachers will also use these valuable
resources as a source of cross-reference for research
purposes. These books will help the students in
exploring the culture and literature of western
civilizations”,he added.
“Because of the internet, the habit of book reading
has been damaged. Students and teachers have
easier access to information through the internet
whenever they need something. The initiative of
Hashoo Foundation and Rotary Club will play
significant role in rejuvenating the reading habit
fromthe diversified collectionofbooks”.

4.2. Case Study 2: Hunza Leaders College, Aliabad
Hunza
Hunza Leaders College (HLC) is an emerging
group of colleges in Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan. Being
a leading educational institute, HLC is striving to
provide all basic necessities to their students.
Operating in a far-flung area, the institute faces a
tremendous lack of resources to promote the
efficacyoftheir students'education.
Management of Hunza Leaders Colleges
explained:
“Without a considerable number of resources, an
educational institution can hardly claim to impart
standard education toitspupils”.
Mr. Shukoor (HF) organized an orientation session on book reading habits with students in Islamabad.
With regard to the Rotary books donation, the
spokespersonofHLCadded:
“The impact of books on one's life is everlasting and
far-reaching. We believe there is no room for
mediocrity in the 21st century. Students must be
equipped with the knowledge and competence to
effectively compete on national and international
platforms. The accessibility to the international
universities now is in hand-held computers. The
books will greatly improve analytical skills of
students to understand their field from different
approaches i.e. European, American etc. that would
enable them to pursue higher studies accordingly.
This will bring lasting effects not only to the lives of
students buttothe communityas whole”.
Rotary books will help promote excellent reading
habits amongst students, who, in return, would be
able to deliver effective services to community in
the future.

4.3. Case Study 3: Dar Ali Bin Abi Talib School,
H-8 Islamabad
“We are pleased to serve the most deserving segment of
the society by providing best facilities in Islamabad.
Due to lack of resources/materials and other highly
prioritized needs of the students, it was quite difficult to
replenish the library with required resources. Now is
possiblewiththe help ofthe Rotarybooks”.
Dar Ali Bin Abi Talib School, an Islamabad based
educational institute and a project of International
Islamic Relief, focuses on the education of
orphans and less privileged students across
Pakistan. It provides boarding to more than 200
orphan students that also includes provision of
free education with best facilities available at the
premises. Affiliated with Federal Board of
Intermediate and Secondary Education
Islamabad for Higher Secondary School
Certificate Level, the school has remarkable
footingsinitsoperation.
Javed Ullah Khan, the principal of the school
spoke of the contribution from HF and Rotary as
follows:
Keeping in consideration the need and
importance of the library, the concerned school
Management inferred:
The institute observed that number of students
attending the library increased after it was
replenished with books. The management and
students are very pleased with the donation of
valuable books and educational materials by
Rotary andHF.
Hashoo Foundation has conducted regular visits
to the library to provide their technical support in
howto manage the booksinthe library.
“In order to keep registration with Federal Board of
Intermediate and Secondary Education Islamabad, it is
essential that the library should have at-least 3,000
books. The school was in shortfall of books and now they
regularly insist on increasing the number of books. The
direct benefit of Hashoo Foundation and Rotary book
donation is that the library has been filled with adequate
number ofbooks—aconditionrequired forFBISE”.
5. Role of Volunteers
Volunteers played vital role in effectively sorting
and distributing of Rotary books among the
selected institutions. Education Department of
Hashoo Foundation developed a well-organized
team of volunteers, majority of them are HF
Scholars, YDC Students and Alumni members of
HF Scholarship Program. In 2014, Hashoo
Foundation engaged approximately 200
volunteers for unloading, sorting, grading, listing,
packing anddistributing ofRotary books.
HF team, Rotary and other stakeholders highly
appreciated their dedication and spirit of
volunteerism. A core member of the HF team
noted that he was very inspired by the passion
and dedication of these volunteers towards the
task assignedto them.
From the volunteers' perspective, the experience
was also beneficial for them as during sorting,
grading and listing of books they went through
considerable contents, which was a source of
informationandinspirationforthem.
25. 24
6. Challenges and Learnings
We received thousands of different books,
which need ample time for sorting. It is
difficult to find regular volunteers who
commit to help for certain time. New
volunteers joining in every weekend
makes difficult the continuity and the
consistencyofthe work.
Educational institutions in far-flung areas
have difficulties reaching the distribution
point. In order to overcome this obstacle,
HF had to procure support to deliver the
booksthrough courier.
It was difficult to develop a schedule with
Rotary volunteers and mobilize them on
requiredtime.
Due to unavailability of communication
services and Internet in far-flung areas, it is
very difficult to collect pictures and reports
induetime.
We learned there is a high demand for
reference books like dictionaries,
thesaurus,Encyclopediasetc.

The USA effort has spread well beyond Texas in
its tenth year. Rotary Clubs in sixteen states have
contributed to the project. The number of the
shipments over the years has increased from three
per year to three per month. February 2006 saw a
dramatic increase in shipping capability when
Mclean Cargo Specialists started hosting the
shipments. McLean was a professional Freight
Forwarder owned by Rotarian Angie Jimenez.
Problems with paperwork which had troubled the
project from its beginning have been solved by
McLean. Mr. Jimenez has sold his business in 2008
and the new owners did not wish to donate their
servicesasMr.Jimenezdid.
The project is hosted by Excel Corporation in its La
Porte, Texas location. A professional warehouse
and shipper are necessities for the transport of
donations-in-kind. Volunteers are absolutely
necessary to make the project work but
supervision of loading the containers and
processing the paperwork needs to be
professionally done. The Rotarians of District
5890 and 5910 have provided a reservoir of
volunteer help at repackaging the books for
optimum loading and shipping. Click here for
information on the preparation of books for
shipping. The Rotarians at the Wisconsin and
New York collection sites are particularly good at
preparing the booksforshipment.

into two districts namely 310 comprising of areas
from Kabul to Delhi and 305 from Karachi to
Bombay. In the year 1961-62 Syed Jameel H. Rizvi
