We are pleased to present to you
the 30th issue of the newsletter.
On this occasion, we would like to
summarize HF's accomplishments
for 2016. A concerted effort to
restructure our core office and
subsidiaries has been finalized and
a resultant strengthening of the
foundation can already be felt.
During the last few months we had the honor of welcom-
ing several new team members. We were successful in
implementing seven key major projects, while the year
ended with the conclusion of two projects from Gilgit
Baltistan, Chitral and peri rural areas of Islamabad. The
results that we have achieved are promising and through
our efforts we were able to enhance the lives of the most
marginalized people from underprivileged backgrounds. As
our trainees now begin to complete their training and
enter employment, we hope to keep bringing you stories
of their success and experiences. We are also working,
what could be called, inside-out, taking stories from the
projects and communicating them to the outside world to
raise awareness. Going forward, our community needs to
build on this progress. That means growing our partner-
ships, diversifying development finance, adapting our
systems for the world we live in and giving transformation
time to blossom.
Together, we can do it. And as you'll see below, there are

Salman Abidin, the Regional Program Manager (RPM)
of Hashoo Foundation's Regional Office Chitral (ROC)
lost his life in PIA plane crash on December 7, 2016
along with 46 other passengers. May Almighty Allah rest
their souls in eternal peace and grant courage to the
bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss. Salman
will be sorely missed by his family, friends and col-
leagues for long time to come.
He was a soft, polite and kind person with high moral
values. He always showed care for friends and col-
leagues with ready disposition to get their problems
resolved. He kept cool even in midst of hyper tense
environment but never lost temper. He had enormous
skills to command by giving respect to others and never

Promoting Indigenous Culture of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral
To have no cultural and traditional background to
your memories is equal to having no education.
Cultural traditions are important because they
transmit shared values, stories and goals from one
generation to the next and encourage groups of
people to create and share a collective identity,
which in turn serves to shape individual identities.
The Hashoo Foundation (HF) with financial assistance
of the Center for Culture and Development of
Denmark (CKU) concluded the project, “Harnessing
Indigenous Cultures for Economic Empowerment of
Artisans and Sectarian Harmony in Gilgit-Baltistan
and Chitral” on 16th December 2016. The project
completion ceremony was organized at the Pakistan
National Council of Arts (PNCA).
The event opened with a musical performance by
traditional band who had especially come from
Gilgit-Baltistan, to pay tribute to the people whose
lives were lost in the tragic air crash of PK661 on 7th
December 2016.
The project was aimed at reviving indigenous
cultures of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral to
economically empower its local artisans and to
promote the social and sectarian harmony in the
region. A total of 22 festivals were organized that
received overwhelming appreciation from
communities as most of the festivals had been
obsolete. 350 local artisans received training in stone
carving, wood carving and in traditional music. The
artisans also learned techniques for creating value
chain and enterprise for sustainable economic
empowerment. As a result of these trainings several
business groups have been formed in the region to
further promote the value chain of local products
and services.
“Local culture and traditions are important part of
any society as it is the root to how societies are built
and how people form opinions and build relations.
We strongly believe that art and culture are
important means to bridge differences, to create
tolerance and to provide economic opportunities for
communities as well as individuals” said Amir
Hussain, Director Programs, Hashoo Foundation
during his welcome address.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Head, Royal
Embassy of Denmark in Islamabad, Jakob Jakobsen ,
said that Government of Denmark is proud to be
supporting art and culture in Pakistan that focus on
supporting minorities, as well as women, youth, local
artists and artisans, entrepreneurs and civil society
organizations by providing larger access to art,
culture and creative industries and public-private
partnerships.

'GHARIKHOMIK' Celebrated at Tero Valley, Ghizr
Hashoo Foundation, in partnership with the Centre for
Culture and Development of Denmark (CKU), organized a
one day local level festival called” Gharikhomik”, filling the
ambience of Ghizer valley with flavors of indigenous
culture.
The festival was bursting with cultural activities including
traditional dance, Shina and Khower songs and folk comedy
play. Traditional culinary delicacies were the main highlight
of the festival. “Makuti”, a traditional cake made by the
female head of the Shepard family and “Gulmandi”,
traditional cheese bread made from the cheese collected
and made by female Shepard's were presented to the
guests.

Youth development is an intentional, pro-social approach that engages
youth within their communities, schools, organizations, peer groups, and
families in a manner that is productive and constructive; recognizes,
utilizes, and enhances youths' strengths and promotes positive outcomes
for young people by providing opportunities, fostering positive
relationships, and furnishing the support needed to build on their
leadership strengths.
The Hashoo Foundation has established Youth Development Centers
(YDC) in different regions that are currently catering to 4500 boys and
girls. The HF has designed interventions for their holistic development by
providing conducive living, learning and social grooming environment.
The YDC for girls in Gilgit engaged in an activity contributing to
ecosystem conservation and home gardening. The girls were sensitized
through an awareness session to make a small model of a sustainable
city, including rainwater harvesting, organic farming and solid waste
management through recycling of perishable garbage. They were also
oriented on off-season farming by growing vegetable seeds through
different methods including deposing home degradable and perishable
waste management.
The daylong event was well attended by more
than 2,000 spectators from all over district Ghizer.
The Minister for Planning and Development,
Gilgit-Balitstan, Fida Khan Fida was the Chief
Guest at the event.Mr. Fida applauded the efforts
of Hashoo Foundation and CKU and was of the
view that such great work should continue in
order to preserve the indigenous culture of
Chitral and other regions.

High Level Officials from the Embassy of Denmark in Pakistan visit
Hashoo Foundation Project Sites in Gilgit
A delegation comprising of His Excellency Mr. Ole
Thonke, the Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan and
Mr. Jakob Rogild Jakobsen, Deputy Head of Mission,
Embassy of Denmark were facilitated in field
immersion in Gilgit. The delegation was facilitated by
Regional Program Manager (RMP), Bulbul Jan Shams
along with Project Officer, Mr. Amjad Ali Khan, who
formally received His Excellency and other
distinguished guests.
The visit included a series of activities. After a grand
welcome and introductory session, Mr. Bulbul Jan
Shams, RPM-HF, delivered a brief presentation to
outline the Foundation's development efforts in
Gilgit Baltistan, he further introduced HF's intensive
star initiatives such as Plan Bee, Children Education
Support Program (CESP), Youth Development
Program, and Skills Training Programmes to the
delegation.
Mr. Amjad Khan further highlighted various successes
of the project and shared the project's learnings,
challenges, and the communities' response to the
interventions with the participants.
Local implementing partners including Hunza Arts
and Culture Council, Ghizer Arts and Culture Council
and Karakoram Area Development Organization
KADO also took the opportunity to express their
gratitude to the Danish Government for their kind
support and shared their experiences during the
project implementation.
The dignitaries also visited the stalls of wood and
stone carving set up by the trainees of the project
funded by Danish Centre for Culture and
Development (CKU).
The delegation appreciated the uniqueness of the
project and the deep-rooted imprints it would leave
on the cultural canvas of the region. HE, Mr. Ole
Thonke expressed his gratitude to HF and all the
implementing partners for their amazing
achievements and tireless efforts geared towards the
successful implementation of this project and
partnership.
The mission concluded with local traditional song and
dance performances by talented emerging artists,
Mr. Ayoub Mutasir a renowned singer also performed
a folk song at the occasion.

Graphic Designers trained by HF Compete in a Skills Competition
National Vocational & Technical Training Commission
(NAVTTC) is an apex body at national level to
regulate, facilitate and provide policy direction in
Vocational & Technical Training. The Commission is
establishing and promoting linkages among various
stakeholders existing at national as well as
international level and provides direction, support
and an enabling environment to the public and
private sectors to implement training for skills
development in order to enhance social and
economic profile.
The Hashoo Foundation in collaboration with
National Vocational & Technical Training Commission
(NAVTTC) is implementing the Prime Minister's Youth
Skills Development Programme, to train young girls
and boys in trades such as graphic designing, front
desk management and cooking. Recently a national
graphic design skills competition was held to award
projects that focus on innovation, technology, design
and creativity to push them further for success.
Fourteen (14) students participated in the
competition from Hashoo Foundation and Karakorum
Area Development Organization (KADO).
The competition was a practical demonstration of
their skills in different graphic design software such
as Coreldraw, MS Word, MS Excel and Inpage.
Submitted entries were judged by an experienced
jury panel composed of academics, design
professionals and media members. The panel
comprised of three judges, Rahim ud din, Assistant
Professor, Degree College Yaseen, Ghizer. Mehdi ul
Hassan, Lecturer IT Directorate of Education, Gilgit,
and Farid Ul Haq, Lecturer Degree College Jutial,
Gilgit.
While the definition of "Design" could differ for each
different discipline, the evaluation criteria was based
on aesthetics of form and shape, texture, finishing,
graphical communication, colors, innovation,
emotional values and overall complexity or simplicity.
Top three graphic designers were selected on the
basis of the practical demonstration of the
assignment work against the set criteria. Trainees of
Hashoo Foundation bagged the second and third
position. Shumaila Bashir stood Second (2nd) while.
Wahid Hussain stood Third (3rd) in the competition.
These students will further compete in a national
level competition in Islamabad.
The prize and certificate distribution ceremony was
held at the Karakorum Polytechnic Institute Giligt.
Deputy Director, NAVTTC Islamabad region and
Director, Benazir Income Support Programme,
distributed the certificates among the winners.
Mr, Ibrahim Sanai, Minister Education, Gilgit Baltistan
was the Chief Guest. He emphasized the importance
of skill development and also praised the role of
Hashoo Foundation in skills development initiatives.
Mr. Sanai further underlined the many pros of public
private partnership and encouraged the training
providers to form collaborations for further
advancement in the field of skill development.

8. Updates
Orientation Session of Front Desk and Hotel Management Training
Programme held
Under the Prime Minister Youth Skills Development
Program, HF's Regional Office in Gilgit is training
young girls and boys in Front Desk and Hotel
Management Training Programme . The project is
supported by NAVTCC. Recently an orientation
session was held to orient the trainees on the
standards and operating procedures of the training
programme The session was attended by Hashoo
Foundation Regional Office Gilgit staff, trainers and
(25) selected trainees, (10) Female and (15) male of
Front Desk training program. The participants were
also briefed about the core values, mission and vision
of the foundation. The Manuals, identity cards,
timetable etc. were also distributed among them.
Orientation Session for New Boarders
Youth Development Centre (YDC) Gilgit arranged an
orientation session for new boarders. This Fresher's
Day is marked as a memorable day in the life of every
new boarder. The event was aimed at orienting the
new comers regarding the YDC rules, regulations and
policies. Around 130 Boarders attended this event
filled excitement, joy, music and enthusiasm.

UNESCO Delegation visit HF Project Sites in Chitral and
Bumborate Valley
Chitral, a narrow valley 320 km long in the
northwestern corner of Pakistan, is home to some
quarter of a million-people living in small villages
built of square stone houses set amid tiny terraced
fields of wheat and maize. Cut off from the rest of
Pakistan by snowfall from December to May, the
valley comes to life in summer and is an ideal
destination for trekking, river rafting and other
activities. The contrast between the vivid green
terraced fields, the barren brown slopes and the
towering snow-capped mountains above gives Chitral
its unforgettable beauty.
Chitral borders the Kalash Valleys of Birir, Bumburet
and Rumbur, full of dense vegetation and giant
walnut and fruit trees draped in vines overhanging
fast-flowing streams, and home to the Kalash people,
often said to be descended from the legions of
Alexander the Great
The Kalashas' distinctive culture and beliefs, together
with their fair hair and blue eyes, differentiates them
from communities in neighbouring Chitral, rendering
them mysterious to generations of visitors and
travelers. Their way of life, dresses, cuisines, religious
festival and rituals, are entirely different from that of
their Muslim neighbours. The indigenous Kalash
culture is potentially threatened with extinction due
to growing intolerance and unrest in the
neighbouring regions. The impoverished Kalash
communities and their colourful cultural practices,
festivals and overall way of life is at risk.
Realizing this the Hashoo Foundation in collaboration
with UNESCO has been implementing a project 'Socio
Economic Empowerment of Kalash Women through
Making of Traditional Products using Contemporary
Approach — aimed at protecting and promoting the
identity through the economic and social
empowerment of the Kalash community, particularly
women, in the Bumborate valley of district Chitral,
Pakistan. Through this project the Hashoo
Foundation (HF) has built the capacity of 80 women
in preparing traditional products and in establishing a
home-based enterprise.
The Kalash dresses and other products are
inalienably linked with maintenance of Kalash
cultural identity. They are clearly identified wherever
they go. These products are specifically prepared for
ceremonial occasions such as Christmas—the winter
solstice festivals and Chilim-Jusht the festival seeking
prosperity on the eve of spring. Tourists happily
purchase these dress/costume/products to take it
back home as a souvenir.
Recently a delegation of high level officials consisting
of Vibeke Jensen, Representative/ Director UNESCO,
Pakistan, along with Sunnia Jabeen, Consultant,
visited HF project site in Chitral. During their visit,
they met with the local Kalash women and
appreciated HF's efforts in preserving the threatened
culture.
The project is intended to harnessing the local
resources for Kalash women's social and economic
empowerment and to make it a vehicle for
strengthening their cultural identity.

HF Launches TUSDEC-sponsored HMTP Project in
Regional office Chitral (RoC)
Hashoo Foundation (HF) Regional office Chitral (RoC)
in collaboration with Technical Upgradation & Skill
Development Company (TUSDEC) of the Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan for the first-time
launched Hospitality Management Training Program
(HMTP) in district Chitral through the financial
support of European Union (EU) focusing on building
the skills of trainees in the trade of Reception
Services and Waitering.
The purpose of the training is to impart skills to the
selected youth belonging to disadvantaged families
of Chitral's remote and least accessible areas and
seek their economic and social empowerment by
providing healthy income earning opportunities
through this training. The inauguration ceremony
was attended by Haji Maghfirat Shah, Nazim district
Chitral and Khursheed Ali Khan, ex-nazim, a
renowned political leader and social worker of
district Chitral.
Shams Uddin, Program Manager of HF Regional office
Chitral (RoC) welcomed the guest and highlighted the
objectives and priorities of the project. “Since 1988
Hashoo Foundation (HF) has been working to
improve the quality of life of the vulnerable
segments of the society in all the provinces of the
country. He also underscored the importance and
growing need of HMTP in district Chitral, where
tourism industry has a bright future, especially once
the Lowari tunnel is functional in 2018.
The initiative is aimed at reducing poverty amongst
the youth of Chitral by building their skills and linking
them with market for income earning opportunities
within hospitality industry. Almost100 students have
so far been enrolled for this training programme.
Addressing the forum, Aftab Ali Baig, Master Trainer
F&B said that the Hashoo family is the pioneer in
hospitality industry within Pakistan and that RoC has
initiated HMTP for the first time in Chitral, which is
going to be the business hub in near future.
Fazl-ur-Rehman Shahid, a poet, writer and facilitator
of HF's school of music project shed light on the
significance of Chitral's culture to provide an enabling
environment for community development. “Our
culture is characterized by inbuilt values of
hospitality since time immemorial and now time ripe
for us to blend the values of our traditional
hospitality with that of modern ones and in so doing
training like this play critical role. He thanked HF to
provide the training program, which the youth of
Chitral so desperately needed. In his address, Haji
Maghfirat, Nazim district Chitral, said that Hashoo
Foundation (HF) has greatly contributed towards the
development of impoverished communities in district
Chitral and that district government will extend its
complete support towards materialization of HF
activities in future. He said that district
administration is looking forward to jointly work with
the organization in reducing youth's economic and
social vulnerability.
He advised the trainees to honor the opportunity
provided by HF and equip themselves with HMTP
skills for which district Chitral has huge potential in
future. “About each and every profession our outlook
has to be positive and we must invest our full energy
to learn it completely so that we will become a
respectable individual of the society” he said. He also
recited a Persian poem at the end to drive his point
home.

HF Programme Director and
Head of Trainings Visit Regional
Office Chitral
Hashoo Foundation's senior officials Amir Hussain,
Director Programmes and Javaid Akhtar, Head of
Trainings, visited Regional office Chitral (RoC). The
purpose of visit was to monitor activities of the
ongoing projects and sharing organizational priorities
focusing on improved performance on the part of HF
staff in the wider interest of the impoverished
communities as envisaged by the Foundation.
The team also visited Early Childhood Development
(ECD) Center located in the premises of Youth
Development Center (YDC) and interacted with the
trainees, observed teaching methods undertaken by
trainers and provided them technical guidance for
further improvement.
Baseline Survey - Socio Economic
Empowerment of Kalash Women
through Making of Traditional
Products Using Contemporary
Approach
HF's Regional office Chitral (RoC) launched the
baseline survey of the UNESCO-funded project 'Socio
Economic Empowerment of Kalash Women through
Making of Traditional Products Using Contemporary
Approach' in Bumborate valley of district Chitral.
The project is designed to harnessing the local
resources for Kalash women's social and economic
empowerment and to make it a vehicle for
strengthening the identity of their unique and
colorful culture.
The purpose of the baseline survey is to gauge the
existing skills of the Kalash women in dress-making
and to arrange the training in a way that must suit
their need and personal skills.
Shams Uddin, Program Manager and Mr. Khalid
Ahmed, Training Officer of HF's Regional office Chitral
(RoC) facilitated the orientation session on the
baseline survey.

Hashoo Foundation's officials including Amir Hussain,
Director Programmes, Javaid Akhtar, Head of
Trainings, and Shams Uddin, Acting Program
Manager, Regional office Chitral (RoC) participated in
a Stakeholders Roundtable Conference in Terichmir
Hotel, organized by Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund
(PPAF).
The purpose of the conference was to prepare a
more responsive and inclusive strategy for PPAF
HF Officials Participate in a Stakeholders' Round Table Conference
poverty alleviation projects across the district Chitral
in consultation with a diverse array of stakeholders
and partners.
HF's participation was aimed at interaction with PPAF
senior officials and representatives from public and
private sector. The officials also interacted with
political leadership of district Chitral and shared with
them HF's future strategy for multi-dimensional
initiatives for community development in the region.

The Hashoo Foundation in partnership with UNDP is helping at–
risk youth gain marketable skills
There are more young Pakistanis today than ever
before. Nearly a third of the population is between
15 and 29 years of age; together these young people
make up a vast pool of energy, talent and enthusiasm
to build a better Pakistan. This large youth population
is a great gift for any country. As the young enter
employment, they form the biggest workforce in
history, bringing prosperity and vigour to the national
economy and to society as a whole.
The Hashoo Foundation under its thematic area of
Economic Empowerment implemented a project with
the support of United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP) to provide entrepreneurial skills
training to youth in the FATA. These youngsters do
not usually possess the skills to earn livelihoods given
their limited education and means. The project “FATA
Youth Empowerment through Skills Development
Training” is aimed at providing training to 120
unskilled youth of FATA in marketable skills.
Skill development training is one of the flagship
programmes' of the Hashoo Foundation, focused on
imparting knowledge and skills to young women and
men thus providing opportunities to learn & practice
the skills required for income generation and
meaningful livelihood.
The course span was spread over 45 days of
theoretical training and 30 days of practical. So for 60
trainees have received training from the FATA region
with the aim to generate income from employment,
intrapreneurship or entrepreneurship. The
programme concluded with a graduation ceremony
to award the trainees for successful completion of
the course where they took to stage to share their
experiences.
'Besides being taught the art of marble polishing and
restoration, we were also provided extensive training
on entrepreneurship development. A significant part
of the program was dedicated to hands on training
that gave us the opportunity to practice our skill
under the guidance of expert master trainers' said
Abdul Mannan, an outstanding graduate of Marble
Shining and Stone Restoration Training Programme.

Manager Enterprise Development Programme (EDP)
said that the purpose of this kind of youth work is to
facilitate and support young people's growth by
encouraging their personal and social development
and enabling them to have a voice, influence and
place in their communities and society.
Taj Muhammad Afridi, Senator from FATA graced the
event as chief guest where he applauded the
ventures of Hashoo Foundation & UNDP for
providing marketable skills to youth, He paid thanks
to Hashoo Foundation Training Team for skilling the
underprivileged youth of FATA region and creating
their linkages with market to enhance their livelihood
opportunities and improve their socio-economic
status.
Pakistan's demographic dividend will not last forever.
Typically, the youth bulge is followed by decreasing
birth rates as in prosperous societies with high levels
of employment, empowered women have fewer
children than their mothers and grandmothers. At
this stage in the country's history it is imperative to
seize the opportunity posed by its young population
and create the conditions for them to become full
contributors to sustainable development.

World Teacher's Day: A reason
for celebration
Teachers are a significant part of everyone's life. They
show us the right path and groom us to become a
better citizen and a better person. They teach us to
face the most difficult challenges of life and get
through them, easily.
All across the world, Teacher's Day celebrations are
undertaken to honor teachers for their sincere efforts
to impart knowledge to their students. By having
celebrations on Teacher's Day, we convey the
message that we care for our teachers, just as they
do. Celebrating the festival is the recognition of the
devotion, with which, teachers undertake the
responsibility of educating a child academically as
well as morally.
This year on World Teacher's Day the Early Childhood
Development Team organized an event consisting of
activities of celebration, thanks and remembrance at
Human Development Resource Centre to pay tribute
to their teachers. The students performed short skits
and qawwali and read poetry for their teachers.
The event also included speeches by the students to
show their gratitude. At the end a token of
appreciation was presented to all the students by the
Head of Education Mr. Fida Karim to acknowledge
their efforts.
Regional Skills Competition
A regional skills competition was held at National
Institute of Science & Technical Education,
Islamabad. The objective of the competition was to
enhance vocational skills of youth and a step forward
to boost the morale of the students and attract them
towards vocational education. The Hashoo
Foundation participated in this competition under
the trade of Information Technology.
HF also exhibited their projects and programmes
through the showcase of skills and display of
materials produced by the trainees at the stalls.
This competition is organized by National Vocational
and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) in
which a number of trainees participated from
Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Azad Jammu
& Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan to exhibit their skills in
six trades including, Auto Cad, General Electrician,
Plumbing/Pipe Fitting, Beautician, Fashion Designing
and Dress Making.
These skills competitions focus on capacity building
of our youth so that they are in a better position to
secure jobs both at national and international
market.

Graduation Ceremony
Hospitality Management Training Programme
(HMTP) is one of the flagship programmes’ of HF
focused to impart knowledge and skills to young
women and men giving them opportunities to learn
& practice the skills required for the hospitality
industry in Pakistan and abroad. HMTP was first
initiated in 1999 by introducing practical training in
Marriott and Pearl Continental Hotels across
Pakistan.
The programme is facilitating youth with various
International Vocational Qualifications (IVQs)
curriculum/content, approved by City & Guilds U
Under its Economic Empowerment Programme, the
Hashoo Foundation in collaboration with FATA
Development Authority has provided Hospitality
Management Training to 250 youngsters. The
initiative was especially designed and developed for
the youth from seven agencies of FATA with the
primary objective to bring peace and prosperity and
improve livelihood through employable skills'
training. The training concluded with a graduation
ceremony to award 105 trainees with certificate of
completion.
Mr. Tufail Khalil - Programme Director FATA DA graced
the ceremony as Chief Guest and praised highly the
skills' quality of the HF trainees. He applauded the
contribution of Hashoo Foundation in imparting
knowledge, skills and competencies and in making
them productive and active citizens of Pakistan.
The event was attended by key officials from FATA
Development Authority and Hashoo Foundation.
Former trainees, Abdul Wahid, an Entrepreneur and
Mushtaq from Royalton Hotel shared their success
journeys after receiving this training.
Hashoo Foundation is providing employable skills to
youth across Pakistan, enabling them to learn and
practice the skills required by the contemporary
competitive markets. The Foundation also provides
them livelihood opportunities by broadening their
skill-set in line with the market demand.

Walk for Education
A good walk can help you stay fit and clear your
mind. It can also help provide education to children
in need. In solidarity with millions of children in
Pakistan who have little or no access to education,
the Hashoo Foundation (HF) and Zindagi Trust
organized a walk at F-9 Park Islamabad to promote
the cause of improving access to and quality of
education for out of school children. The walk aimed
to create empathy and awareness about the plights
of out of school children as well as to complement
the government endeavors of education for all as
enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan under the
Article 25-A
The walk was inaugurated by Chief Guest Mr. Shah
Khawar – Board of Trustee Hashoo Foundation along
with Ms. Ayesha Khan - Country Director Hashoo
Foundation and Allah Nawaz Samoo renowned
Educationist
About 1,000 people from all walks of life including
children, representative of civil society and public
and private sector and common citizens, attended
the event and pledged their support to help the
students of underprivileged families from far flung
areas of Pakistan who have no access to quality
education.
During the walk, participants were captivated with
face painting, poster competition, Rotary book
giveaways and refreshment stalls.

Feedback on Hands on Training –
Early Childhood
Development Programme
Ms. Shazia Sultan, Assistant Programme Officer
visited The City School for feedback of Early
Childhood Development trainees who are currently
placed at their school for hands-on training. A
detailed meeting was held with the School
Coordinator regarding the strengths and areas of
improvement of the placed trainees.
Exposure Visit
Exposure visits can be a good way to encourage and
motivate the trainees. They enable the trainees to
see how the business is organized, managed and
carried out. A full day trip was arranged for 60
Trainees of Marble Polishing and Stone Restoration
trade to a marble factory site in I-9 industrial area of
Islamabad. The objective of the trip was to help the
trainees gain practical knowledge about the marble
industry and observe market practices.
Orientation Session on
Montessori Training Program
Held
The Regional Office Rawalpindi under the Early
Childhood Development Programme (ECD) organized
an orientation session of Diploma Level Montessori
programmes for 18 trainees at Human Development
Resource Centre Rawalpindi. A detailed presentation
was given by Ms. Shazia Sultan on ECD and the
course outline of Montessori Diploma. The trainees
were further sensitized on the role of job placement
cell and feedback mechanism
Entrepreneurship as a career
option
Hashoo Foundation organized a seminar on
“Entrepreneurship as a career option”, in partnership
with SMEDA Lahore for the trainees of Marble
Polishing and Stone Restoration Training under FATA
Youth Empowerment through Skills Development
Programme. The trainees were given the opportunity
to ask questions and participate in group activities.
The graduates from previous sessions, who have
initiated their own enterprise were also invited at the
event for experience sharing.

Completion of Trainings:
Batch One under Prime Minister's
Youth Skills Development
Programme
Under the Prime Minister Youth Skills Development
Programme Phase III 2016, Hashoo Foundation has
successfully completed Hospitality Management
Trainings in its different regional centers including
Rawalpindi, Karachi & Peshawar and has trained 149
young boys and girls.
The trades focused for this training were Domestic
Work, Front Desk Management and Professional
Cooking. The foundation has been awarded the
funding for Batch II Training under the same
programme. The course for the new inductees has
already begun to train 120 youth from all over the
Pakistan.
Hands on Training in Hospitality
Management
45 Trainees successfully completed the hands-on
training under the project 'Empowering FATA Youth
through Hospitality Management Training Program',
funded by FATA Development Authority. The
participants were taken for exposure visits to
different five star hotels in Pakistan including Pearl
Continental Hotel Bhurban, Peshawar, Rawalpindi &
Muzaffarabad.

International Chef Day
Celebrated
International Chefs Day falls every year on October
20. This international observance is considered to be
a professional day of all chefs around the world.
Celebration of International Chefs Day usually
includes culinary contests, that are organized in many
big cities. This year, on behalf of the Hashoo
Foundation Muhammad Nadeem Talib, Senior
Culinary Art Trainer participated in PTV's flagship
show 'Morning with Juggan'. Professionals from field
of culinary art were also part of the programme.
The participants tried to put together an
unforgettable show to elevate the image of this
profession, popularize professional culinary art
among people and raise public awareness of
importance of healthy and good food and issues of
its wasting.
Cook Off!
The Regional Office Lahore organized a Cooking
Competition to evaluate the cooking skills of the
trainees at Human Development Resource Center.
The participants demonstrated and presented their
culinary skills in groups. Nadeem Talib , Senior
Culinary Art Trainer along with the training team
made a continuous observation and assessment for
ensuring the quality of the food. The trainees'
performance was marked on the criteria of their
team work and leadership and on the food's taste
and presentation. These indicators of the evaluation
enhanced their practical exposure and helped them
learn time management for the related experiences
in their upcoming professional lives
Guest in Town
Renowned Pastry Chef, Dennis Bussey visited Hashoo
Foundation's Human Development Resource Centre
in Rawalpindi and Lahore. The purpose of his visit
was to share the international experience and best
practices from the industry with the trainees.
Mr. Bussey delivered a lecture on cookie making
techniques, new trends and innovations followed by
extensive practical activities. Around 80 trainees
attended the session in their respective regions.

Day Handmade Products
Exhibition
The Hashoo Foundation showcased hand made
products and Folk music by the trainees of Gilgit
Baltistan at an exhibition held at Heritage Museum,
Lahore. This exhibition was organized with the
collaboration of Ministry of Industries & Production,
Government of Pakistan, Aik Hunar Aik Nagar (AHAN)
and Centre for Culture and Development Denmark
(CKU).82 organizations and individuals represented
their handmade products

Celebrated
Ithe training department of Regional office Peshawar
also celebrated the International Chef's day at Pearl
Continental Peshawar. Mr. Jan Verduyn, Corporate
GM Operations - Hashoo Hotels appreciated the
efforts of kitchen trainees of Hashoo Foundation and
encouraged the collaboration to celebrate such
events.
Hashoo Foundation Wins
Provincial Competition under
NAVTTC Project
The Hashoo Foundation in collaboration with NAVTTC
has conducted Cooking Courses at Pearl Continental
Hotel Peshawar. NAVTTC organized a Provincial Level
Skill Competition at the Government Technical
College Gulbahar Peshawar. 65 partners of NAVTTC
participated from KPK.
Hashoo Foundation also participated in the Food
Preparation category and secured first three
positions. The winners received cash prizes. On
account of this Hashoo Foundation invited all
Departmental Heads of Pearl Continental Hotel
Peshawar to celebrate this event along with Mr.
Rashid Rauf Banday GM-PCHP, who met with trainees
participating in this competition and appreciated
their efforts.

Hashoo Foundation participated in TUSDEC Job Fair
organized in collaboration with the Sarhad Chamber
of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) Peshawar. 45
Industries and Training Service Providers participated
in the event. Chief Minister KPK, Mr. Pervaiz Khattak
graced the ceremony as Chief Guest.

City & Guilds Orientation Session
on Hospitality and Catering
Qualification
Faisal Ferozali Ghulamani – Senior Skill Development
Officer attended a one day orientation session on
behalf of Hashoo Foundation arranged by City &
Guilds at Pearl Continental Hotel Karachi.
The participants were oriented on how to increase
profitability by improving staff efficiency and
reducing qualification delivery time, ensuring full
transparency and accountability by improving
reporting, quality control and standardization and to
improve the management and delivery of multiple
courses, including apprenticeships and study
programmes.
A certificate distribution ceremony was held at the
end of the session. Staff from Hashoo Group of
Hotels attended the session including Ms. Sofia Awan
- Training Manager, PCHK, Ms. Lubna Farooqui -
Marketing Manager, PCHK and Ms. Shaheen Kamran -
Training Manager, MHK.

28. Welcome Aboard!
Asad Ullah Baig has been appointed as Head of
Human Resources. As the new Head, he brings
extensive social development sector experience to
the organization. We warmly welcome Mr. Asad as
Head of HR. Mr. Asad has 18 years of experience in
MIED as Management Consultant, DAI as Operations
Manager, MEDA as Senior Manager Admin & HR, IRC
as Operations Manager, CRS as Manager HR & Admin
and Aga Khan Education Services as Admin Officer.
Zohra Khanum has joined HF as Senior Programme
Manager Livelihood and Social Protection. Ms. Zohra
has obtained her MSc. Degree in Forestry
Management from Aberdeen University, UK. She
brings 20+ years of experience in the development
sector working with various international and UN
organisations.
Syed Sajid Ali Shah has joined HF as Finance
Manager. Mr. Sajid is an ICMA graduate from Institute
of Cost and Management Accountants. He brings 18
yearsof experience in the development sector with
national and international organizations i.e Relief
International, Somaila as Country Finance Manager,
Aga Khan Foundation as National Finance Manager
and Aga Khan Cultural Service as Manager Finance &
Administration.
Umar Arfi has joined HF as Senior Manager Resource
Mobilisation and Partnership. Mr. Umer has obtained
his Master Degree in Engineering Management. He
brings eight years of work experience in the
development sector working with various national
and international organisations.
Niat Baig has joined Hashoo Foundation as a Cook at
the Youth Development Center for Boys n Gahkuch.
He has more than 18 years’ experience in cooking.
Hiba Siddiqui has joined HF as Senior Programme
Manager Gender, Advocacy and Communications.
Ms. Hiba has obtained her Bachelors of Business
Administration Hons Degree, Marketing and
Communications. She brings ten-year work
experience working with both media and in UN
organizations.
Arslan Ahmed has joined HF as Senior
Communications Officer, he has brings with him
corporate experience of 3 years. He has previously
served at the Hashoo Group, Ufone and Marriott
Islamabad. Mr. Arslan Ahmed has obtained his
Bachelor of Business Adminitration (Hons) Degree in
Marketing and Communications.
Hayat Muhammad Khan has done his BS (Hons) from
Hazara University Mansehra. He has completed 4
months’ internship in AKRSP and has joined Hashoo
Foundation Regional Office Chitral as Youth
Development Fellow.
Faryal Babar has 03 years teaching experience from
Qutaiba School & College System Chitral. She has
completed MA and completed ECD training
conducted by Hashoo Foundation in Regional Office
Chitral. She was an outstanding trainee of the first
batch and now she is conducting ECD Trainings in
ROC.
Gul Nar has joined Hashoo Foundation as a Cook at
the Youth Development Center for Girls in Gilgit.
