How to Use ROPES
– Origin and Model
– Symbols
– Printing Sections of ROPES
• Origin and Model
ROPES provides you with information about four job areas and 23 job
titles in Management and five job areas and 24 job titles in
Marketing. For each specific job title you can see:
– a job description
– a list of skills used in that job
– questions to ask yourself that link job skills to specific coursework
taken in Managerial studies and/or your own personal experiences.

ROPES is designed to let your climb your career path with clearly
focused ideas for education, resumes, and job interviews.
• For example, if you want a job in advertising, you can look at five different job
titles and know exactly what each type of job entails, the skills needed and the
ways it links to your own experience, coursework and interests.
ROPES is based on:
• Department of Labor listings of areas of work, job titles, and needed skills in the
fields of Management and Marketing, and
• faculty surveys of the skills developed in Department courses.
The results give you a heading for the top of your career path. In
fact, the title, ROPES, comes from the classic book, The Ropes to
Skip & the Ropes to Know: The Inner Life an Organization by R.
Richard Ritti and G. Ray Funkhauser.
ROPES starts with areas of Management and Marketing.
Within each area there are industry groupings, for example,
Business or Sales. Specific jobs are listed for each area. The next
two pages present the ROPES model, first for Management and then
for Marketing. The page that follows these models tells you how to
use symbols to skip around in ROPES.

Teacher
Job Description
• TEACHERS act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions
and "hands-on" learning to help students learn and apply concepts in
subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. Classroom
presentations are designed by teachers to meet student needs and
abilities. They also work with students individually. Teachers plan,
evaluate, and assign lessons; prepare, administer, and grade tests;
listen to oral presentations; and maintain classroom discipline. They
observe and evaluate a student's performance and potential, and
increasingly use new assessment methods. For example, teachers may
examine a portfolio of a student's artwork or writing at the end of a
learning period to judge the student's overall progress. They then
provide additional assistance in areas where a student needs help.
Teachers also grade papers, prepare report cards, and meet with
parents and school staff to discuss a student's academic progress or
personal problems.

Buyer, Retail Store
Job Description
• Buyers seek to obtain the highest quality merchandise at the lowest possible purchase cost
for their employers. (In general, buyers buy items for resale.) They determine which
commodities or services are best, choose the suppliers of the product or service, negotiate
the lowest price, and award contracts that ensure the correct amount of the product or
service is received at the appropriate time. In order to accomplish these tasks successfully,
buyers study sales records and inventory levels of current stock, identify foreign and
domestic suppliers, and keep abreast of changes affecting both the supply of and demand
for products and materials for which they are responsible.
• Buyers evaluate suppliers based upon price, quality, service support, availability, reliability,
and selection. To assist them in their search, they review listings in catalogs, industry
periodicals, directories, and trade journals, research the reputation and history of the
suppliers, and advertise anticipated purchase actions in order to solicit bids. Also, meetings,
trade shows, conferences, and visits to suppliers' plants and distribution centers provide
opportunities for buyers to examine products, assess a supplier's production and distribution
capabilities, as well as discuss other technical and business considerations that influence
the purchasing decision. Once all the necessary information on suppliers is gathered, orders
are placed and contracts are awarded to those suppliers who meet the buyers’ needs. Other
specific job duties and responsibilities vary by employer and by the type of commodities or
