some
learners.
Introduction – Let’s begin!
Simulation Exercise
Dynamic
Apply skills
Make sense of theory
Life-like setting
Emotions, attitudes, feelings
Continuous feedback
Let’s talk!
Role play and you
Goals and
Characteristics
What is it?
•Let’s hear from you
Respects prior knowledge and experience
Develops all domains of learning:
• Cognitive
• Affective
• Psychomotor
Advantages for adult learners -
Let’s listen
Advantages
• Active participation -
energizing and fun
• Time efficient
• Experiential learning is
powerful
• Delivers complex concepts in
a simple manner
Disadvantages
• Participants may be too shy and
reluctant
• Can be threatening to some
• It can become ‘too much fun’
and disrupt the task
• Participants can get too involved
and loose objectivity
• Participants can overact and
show off The observers may not
observe well or take notes
• The observers may take ‘sides’
based on their preconceptions
Advantages and Disadvantages
Let’s listen
•Observation
•Modeling
•Reflection
Let’s listen
•How does role play work?
a) Define aims and objectives
b) Define setting
c) Define role descriptors
d) Define time limit
•Key steps to conducting a role play
e) Define observer tasks
f) Define ground rules of safety and feedback
g) Define debrief agenda
h) Define facilitator tasks
•Key steps to conducting a role play
Let s play!
•Wise words…

Role Play Lesson Techniques

Editor's Notes

  1. Introduceourselves.
  2. Heather:Welooked at howto use role play as a teachingmethod and in thenext 20 minutes wewill share anoverview of whatitis, howto use it and we’llhave a short role playgame so we can allexperiencehowit can beused. Wewillprovideyouwith a link tothispresentationtobesentby email toaccess as youwish.
  3. Lorianne: Role play can be a veryusefultoolbutsomepeoplemayfeelapprehensiveoruncomfortablebecauseitrequiresthelearnertosimulateanexperience and oftenisusedtolearn interpersonal skills. Therefore, it can be a riskyexperienceforsomepeople. (clickon link)http://goanimate.com/videos/0Ha9Avg9f6Ok?utm_source=linkshare
  4. Heather: What is role play? It is a “dynamic process that involves participants assuming specified roles and acting out significant events.” The learners or participants can act out the assigned roles in order to explore the scenario, apply skills (maybe communication, negotiation, debate etc.), experience the scenario from another view point, evoke and understand emotions that may be alien to them. It helps to make sense of theory and gathers together the concepts into a practical experience.Lorianne: The goals and characteristics of role play are to place problems or use of skills, particularly one that involve ongoing processes, into a life-like setting where participants can deal with the emotional and attitudinal behaviour in an experiential frame of reference. It emphasizes the importance of feelings and emotional involvement and therefore is very suited to practice involving interpersonal skills. It trains in emotional control and involves continuous feedback.
  5. Heather: Haveyouused role play in yourwork? Whattypes of skillsdidyou use itfor and howdiditworkforyou?
  6. Lorianne: Constructing meaning in a learner is a far better way to make learning memorable than simple transmission. The interaction and stimulation to visual, auditory and kinaesthetic styles of learning helps a broad range of learners. In adults the tool respects their prior knowledge, experience and the reality they bring to a concept. It helps to make the concept being taught to be constructed and then reflected on.It helps to move beyond any comfort zones and helps bring on attitudinal change through different viewpoints too. It helps to develop all domains of learning, cognitive (knowledge) , psychomotor (skills) and affective ( emotional)
  7. Lorianne: What are some advantages and disadvantages of role play as a method?Advantages of Role-PlayEnergizing activity / fun to doAllows participants to contribute actively (even the quieter ones)It is time efficientExperiential learning is more powerful than instructions. It delivers complex concepts in a simple mannerDisadvantagesParticipants may be too shy and reluctantCan be threatening to someIt can become ‘too much fun’ and disrupt the taskParticipants can get too involved and loose objectivityParticipants can overact and show off The observers may not observe well or take notesThe observers may take ‘sides’ based on their preconceptions
  8. Heather: There are various ways role-play can work.Observation : learning through observation and reflection happens when a group of learners watch a specifically constructed role-play using fellow classmates or instructors.b) Modeling: Helps to learn a concept or an idea through participation and in a safe environment. Adults can participate in a constructed scenario- like an angry customer, worried patients, etc.c)Reflection: It can be used for learning in the higher domains when it helps to stimulate analysis through exploring complex concepts or debating issues.
  9. Lorianne: Conducting a role playa) Define aims and objectives (is it to practice skills, explore concepts etc.)b) Define setting/placementc) Define clear role descriptors and what they will say (at least an outline)d) Define time limitThe trainer needsto keep the time,be observant take notes for feedback. We can ask observers to do the same. The feedback should be objective and based on observed facts. If the participants go off the script and become too inventive, this may hijack the agreed agenda and confuse the other participant(s). This is why very clear descriptors for the role and what the role has to say will be useful.
  10. Heather:e) Define observer tasks (if any)f) Define ground rules of safety and feedbackg) Define debrief agendah) Define facilitator tasksFor feedback, the trainer or facilitator can ask participants how it went, what emotions they experienced and how the other made them feel. The groups can give positive and constructive feedback. It is often useful after debrief to summarize what was gained- by asking each participant for their points learnt or understood. It will be usually quite an assortment of learning points that shows how each role-play can stimulate several strands of learning beyond the original aims and objectives.
  11. Heather introduces the role playactivity and facilitatestheactivity.
