This document discusses driver training and learning from a developmental perspective. It addresses:
1. Life-long learning within different traffic roles that people take on from childhood through older adulthood as pedestrians, cyclists, passengers, etc.
2. Elements of competent driving, including four task levels (life and travel tasks, planning and navigation, participation in situations, and vehicle handling) and competence elements like knowledge, decision making, empathy, self-regulation.
3. Ingredients for driver learning design, including developing a mental model of driving, balancing task complexity with capabilities, fading instructor support over time, and general pedagogical principles.
