2. SUBJECT AND
THEMES
• The subject of the documentary was The rock and roll
music scene in New York and more particularly the
photographer, Bob Gruen.
• The documentary had themes of Music, the fans of music
in that time period, the music culture of the 1960’s, and
fashion at the time.
3. STRUCTURE AND
NARRATIVE
• Started with the introduction of the narrator who was the
picture taker for many bands at the time, then goes on to
explore his work including who he worked with, when and
where etc. then ended by saying that he’d finished doing
that work now and explained the reason being Mtv, no
narration just responses from the photographer.
4. MISE EN SCENE
• The documentary used a predominant theme of grunge
colours that were quite boring and bland such as brown
and black, to match the underground feel of the music, it
also had green screen in the back ground displaying black
and white images of the photos that had been taken by the
photographer.
5. CAMERA
• The documentary uses the rule of thirds when
interviewing the photographer and has him looking into
the distance somewhat past the third of the camera that
he’s not sat in, so it looks like he’s reminiscing about the
photos that he’d taken that are being spoken about.
Also, there is a standard close up of the person being
interviewed from the shoulder up.
6. EDITING AND SOUND
• It was edited at a fast pace between the interviewee and
the relevant photos that he’d taken and very rarely stayed
on one particular photo or topic being spoke about for too
long before switching to a different topic, band or
photograph.
• For sound, there was constant non-diegetic rock and roll
music being played in the back ground, with the song
being played by the artist that is being spoken about.
7. ARCHIVE MATERIAL
AND GRAPHICS
• The majority of the documentary consisted of archive
material of photographs because that was the topic of the
documentary. The photos were of bands on tour in the
bus, playing live, posing in certain areas or just getting on
with everyday life to provide the fans and every day
people with a different and unique look upon the music
scene and artists in the 1960’s, which set the foundations
for music and appearance today.
• For graphics, they had the people’s name displayed on the
bottom of the screen on a roll of film, keeping the film
camera related.
