Picturing Punk
Type of documentary
• The Picturing Punk is a mixed documentary
because it uses many conventions of a
documentary. For example it uses, talking
head interviews, vox pop interviews and
archive footage all of the above conventions
anchor the meaning of the documentary and
support the expositions.
Themes
• The themes the documentary explores include
music and its effect on the public and the
artist. It also explores the themes of
photography and another theme it explores is
the music industry.
Narrative Structure
• The narrative structure of the documentary is
split in to three sections as it is linear:
• Beginning
– Opens at the start of the photographers career
• Middle
– In the middle the program explores the photographers
career and what the bands did on tour.
• End
– At the end the documentary explores why he stopped
taking pictures.
Camerawork
• There is a general lack of camera work in this
documentary as all secondary work is
pictures, the camerawork included is from the
interviews all are head and shoulder shots.
Mise – en – scene
• The Mise – en – scene was considered highly
during this production it can be seen as the
interviews have been filmed in locations
which conform to the genre for example the
photographer is interviewed with his work in a
gallery behind him.
sound
• There is no narration in this documentary all
narrative is anchored with the interviews
there is a music bed which changes with the
time.
• There is diegetic music of bands during
performances.
Editing
• A slow motion was added to the archive
footage of the concert which gives the artists
more stature.
• Complex still dissections have been used to
make the pictures come alive with layers.
Archive footage
• Archive footage of concerts awards
ceremonies and music videos were used to
give the production a more sophisticated
finish.
graphics
• Between pictures a film strip is used to cut the
documentary parts and sections up.
