Roald Dahl was a famous British novelist and writer best known for his children's books. He was born in Wales in 1916 to Norwegian parents. Dahl had a varied career that included working for Shell Oil in Africa, serving as a pilot in World War II where he was injured, and eventually becoming a successful author. Some of his most famous books included Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and The BFG. Dahl received many awards over his career for his imaginative stories that appealed to both children and adults. He continued writing until his death in 1990 at age 74.
1. Early life
Roald Dahl was a British novelist, writer of short stories, screenwriter and fighter
pilot. He was born in Wales in 13th September 1916. Before writing he also served
in the Air Force and fought in the World War two. Known as one of the greatest
storytellers for children, he was in the list of „The 50 greatest British writers
since 1945‟.
Roald Dahl was born on the 13th of september 1916. In Llandaff, South Wales. His
parents were both Norwegian. When Roald was 4 years old, his father died. Roald
received his earliest education at Llandaff Cathedral School. When the principal
gave him a harsh beating for messing. Dahl's mother decided to enroll her child at
St. Peter's, a British boarding school, as had been her husband's wish. Roald later
moved to a private school, Repton. this was where his writing skills were first
noticed, by his English teacher who said:“I have never met anybody who so
persistently writes words meaning the exact opposite of what is intended.” While
he was studying at Repton, the chocolate company „Cadbury‟ would send boxes of
chocolate to the school to get tasted. This is where Dahl took inspiration for his
most famous work.„Charlie and the Chocolate Factory‟ which was published in 1963.
Taking inspiration from his life incidence and people he met is very common in his
writings.
After graduating from Repton School in 1933, he went to work for the Shell Oil
Company of East Africa until World War II started in 1939. He then served in the
Royal Air Force as a fighter pilot. In 1940 Dahl's plane was hit by a machine gun
fire, and he was badly injured. He was rescued by a fellow pilot and took him six
months to recover. Although Roald rejoined the air force in the spring of 1941, the
pain from his head and back injuries grew worse so that he had to be sent back to
England on the disabled list.
Awards
2. Throughout Roalds life he won many awards for his creative books. As it is hard to
keep the attention of a child, especially through a book he told the story through
the point of view of a child. His stories typically involve adult villains who hate and
mistreat children, and feature at least one „‟good‟‟ adult to counteract the villain. A
good example of this is Matilda. As both her parents mistreated her along with her
principal. However Ms Honey took good care of her and adopts Matilda at the end.
As Roalds books were very imaginative and appealed to children. He won his first
award in 1954 this was the „‟edgar allen poe award‟‟ This award acknowledged the
best mystery fiction and non fiction. Again in 1959 he won the „‟edgar allan poe

Matilda
My favorite Roald Dahl book would have to be Matilda. Its about gifted girl named
Matilda, born to horrible parents. Matilda‟s parents favorite her brother and are
constantly putting her down, calling her names, and ripping up her books. Despite
her parents neglect Matilda thought her self to read. When angered by her
parents, She comes up with ways to get them back, such as putting glue on the
bottom of her father‟s hat so that it gets stuck to his head. She thinks this is
acceptable as her dad said to her „‟when a person is bad they need to be taught a
lesson‟‟
When Matilda starts school, she is placed in a class with a kind, caring teacher
named Miss Honey. Miss Honey realises how bright and intelligent Matilda is. The
headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, is every bit as awful as Matilda‟s parents. She
hates children and often uses corporal punishment on them.
Throughout the entire novel Matilda's parents are constantly putting her down. As
matilda grows smarter she tells her dad he is a „‟crook‟‟ by selling bad cars at an
unfair price. Mr Underwood replies by saying „‟I'm right and you're wrong, I'm big
and you're small, and there's nothing you can do about it.” We see here how much
harry underestimates his daughter. We also see the treatment she gets from her
parents and how they always criticize and disapprove of her.
“If you are good, life is good.” This is definitely a theme that runs through this
book. I think the reason that this is my favorite book is because of the ending. We
see that Ms Honey and Matilda get a happy ending. As Matilda gets the parent she
never had and Ms Honey gets to foster Matilda a person who she is very fond of
and also gets her house back. However Ms Trunchbull gets what she finally
deserves as Ms Honey learns of Matildas powers. Matilda uses them to get rid of
Mrs trunchbull and all the children at the school seek revenge on her.
4. I think this book is one of roald Dahl's best work! Though there is the serious
issues in this story, there is still great humour.
