What is

Incident
?
An Incident is:
• When a non-serious incident, illness, accident,
trauma or injury occurs that does not contravene the
National Law/or National Regulations
A serious incident is:
• An incident that has occurred or is occurring while
the child is being education for by a service
• The National Law and/or National Regulations have
been contravened

3. Strategies to prevent Incidents
• Educators need to ensure that regular hazard checks of the environment are completed by using the Hazards Checklist
template (indoor and outdoor).
• Equipment and room layout is reviewed throughout the operations of the service.
• The Regional Manager will verify this is occurring during site visits and provide critical reflection and role modelling
where necessary.
• The Regional Manager will also make observations at the service during their site visits to identify any issues and
address them immediately.
• This should be noted on the Service visit hybrid and where relevant, critical reflections in the service journal and Service
QIP.
• Educators need an up-to-date and valid First Aid Certificate.
• A copy must be available on site as part of the staff record and a copy recorded with the educators one team profile.
• The Regional Manager will check this when reviewing Staff records and refer back to OCW to ensure alignment.

4. Day to day management of illness
• If a child presents with an illness the child will be supervised and kept comfortable by educators who will contact the
parent or authorised person to request the child be collected.
• Once the parent or other authorised person has been contacted, they will be advised of the symptoms to assist them to
establish the best course of action by the Educators at the Service.
• If the parent nominates another adult to collect the child from the service, the educator must ensure the adult is
authorised to collect the child and the nominated person will be asked for photo identification.
• In the case of an illness the educator will inform the parent or other authorised person of the exclusion period and will
actively encourage the parent or other authorised person to seek medical attention.
• The regional manager must be contacted whenever a child has had to seek professional medical aid as soon as the
incident/illness/trauma takes place in order to complete a Notification. Please see the next focus are on Notifications
for more information.
• A copy of the Incident report will be provided to the parent or other authorised person upon request and stored with
the child enrolment information sheet. The Regional Manager will review this when verifying compliance during site
visits.
