2013 Masters Thesis Project at Umeå Institute of Design in collaboration with Volvo Group, Sweden. Duration: 17 weeks
--
Indian Railways has grown 10-fold in the last 50 years, but rail track length has only increased 1.4 times & construction methods have hardly changed. The aim was to design the future of railway-track construction in developing countries.
Volvo LINK 500 is a vehicle which lays prefabricated concrete slabs cyclically along a GPS mapped route. Minimizing operator error & increasing efficiency. Manual workforce is still involved in the rough work of placing dowels, which serve as GPS locators/slab guides.
BENEFITS Unlike traditional excavators, the structure of this vehicle allows it to pass over a material-carrying train. It is cheaper, easier to assemble & transport than current solutions, & requires no auxiliary track because it uses pneumatic tyres.
Reinventing the Works Department - PaperSimon Gough
This document discusses reinventing works departments through collaborative contracting for roading maintenance and operations. It outlines key benefits that were lost when works departments were abolished, including providing robust training and creating well-rounded engineers with diverse experience. Spotlight on Trident Task Force, Victorian Police Force Tina_Karas
Detective Superintendent Gerry Ryan & Detective Inspector Anthony Silva from the Victorian Police Force recently joined us to discuss crime in the wider maritime environment, port security arrangements and the role of state police services in combating organised crime.
Following the success of Operation Polaris in NSW, the joint agency task force now known as Trident was established in July 2012 to undertake criminal investigations and enforcement/compliance operations to prevent, deter and defeat serious and organised crime on the Victorian Waterfront. Earlier this month, the multi-agency law enforcement taskforce Operation Jericho commenced operations in Brisbane. What have been some of the impacts of these multi-agency teams and what role does industry play in helping law enforcement reduce organized crime from infiltrating the maritime environment?
The document outlines the agenda for the 10th Anniversary Port & Maritime Security Summit 2013, which will take place over two days. Day one will include sessions on current maritime security issues in Australia and globally, border protection reforms, transport security, port and terminal security, and law enforcement in the maritime environment. Day two will cover topics such as countering terrorism and cargo crime, cybersecurity trends, shipping security, offshore oil and gas security, and cruise passenger vessel security. A panel discussion on creating a safe travel environment for passengers will end the conference.
Addressing the theme, ‘Safe and smooth access to ports: A challenge’, the 9th IHMA Congress in Belgium will showcase technical and operational breakthroughs together with international case studies on the development and management of modern port and marine operations across the globe.
As critical logistic and economic gateways, access to ports is essential for successful maritime operations. Harbour Masters play a key role in the safe, efficient and environmentally sound conduct of marine operations in port waters. As ships get larger, crews get smaller and the landscape of waterways continues to change, how can Harbour Masters, in collaboration with maritime authorities, port users, shipping operators and business partners, offer the best access to ports?
Captain Allan Gray, Federal Master for the Company of Master Mariners Australia joined us to discuss the career paths and opportunities available to today’s mariners.
Before coming ashore and eventually becoming the Harbour Master and General Manager,
Port Operations at Fremantle Ports, Capt Gray had a 20 year career at sea. His passion for advancing the role and voice of mariners continues as his discuss his hopes and aspirations for mariners and the industry as a whole.
Mr Gurpreet Singhota, Deputy Director/Head, Operational Safety Section, Maritime Safety Division at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) joined us for a Q&A session to discuss the aims, impact and progress of the IMO’s e-navigation strategy.
As Secretary of the Sub-Committee on Safety of Navigation (NAV), Mr Singhota has the responsibility for both the NAV and the Sub-Committee on Radiocommunications Search and Rescue (COMSAR) including the development of an e-navigation strategy implementation plan. Mr. Singhota is a Master Mariner with 14 years of sea-going experience, including six years of command experience on a variety of vessels including super tanker, bulk carrier, chemical tanker, cadet training ships.
