RIPE Atlas is a prototype system for a next generation Internet measurement network that aims to scale to thousands of measurement nodes and potentially be deployed everywhere to run different measurements continuously. Small, low-power probes are being developed and deployed to gather data. Early sponsors are supportive of the idea of a large, common measurement infrastructure that serves both private and community goals. The architecture employs hardwired trust and security to prevent snooping or passive measurements by probes. The goal is to build a highly scalable system with global coverage to provide improved network monitoring.
