A Muslim woman named Shayara Bano challenged the practice of triple talaq in the Supreme Court after her husband divorced her using this method. She argued that triple talaq, as well as polygamy and nikah halala, violate the fundamental rights of Muslim women under Articles 14 and 15 of the Indian Constitution. The Supreme Court took up the case and was tasked with determining whether the practice of triple talaq is unconstitutional. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board, which opposed the petition, argued that uncodified personal laws are not subject to constitutional judicial review.
