4. The 1965-rule of the Kerala government that
legally barred women from entering the
Sabarimala Temple was declared
unconstitutional by the Supreme Court last
week. This rule banned women of
menstruating age from entering Sabarimala
Temple.
CJI Dipak Misra-led bench said that women of
all age are allowed to under the Constitution to
enter Sabarimala Temple. Justice Dipak Misra
held that religion is a way of life that is meant
to link life with dignity.
5.
6. In a respite to the Narendra Modi government, the
Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of
Aadhaar. A bunch of petitions had been filed challenging
Aadhaar on the grounds that the collection of biometric
data of the citizens violated the fundamental rights of
people and gave the government an overbearing power
that could be misused.
The Supreme Court held the constitutionality of Aadhaar
but ruled that the UIDAI project could not be made
mandatory for any social welfare scheme and availing
rights. However, Justice Dipak Misra bench ruled that
the government notification for mandatory Aadhaar-PAN
linking was valid.

8. DE-CRIMINALISATION OF SEC377 IPC:...
The Supreme Court declared Section 377
of the IPC as unconstitutional. Section 377
made gay sex a criminal offence with a
provision for jail term up to five years.
CJI Dipak Misra held that Section 377
denied the fundamental right to choose
without fear a partner and the basic right
to companionship.
9.
10. It began with the Supreme Court holding
Section 497 of the IPC as unconstitutional.
Section 497 defined adultery a crime. But it
said that it was an offence committed by a
man against a married man if the former
established an adulterous relationship with
latter's wife.
The right to consent of the woman was
vested in her husband. The Supreme Court
struck down Section 497 for violating
fundamental right to equality.
11.
12. Within 10 days of taking oath as the CJI,
Justice Dipak Misra gave a ruling to make
working of police transparent and
accountable to public.
The Supreme Court ordered all the states
to make all FIRs online within 24 hours of
its registration. The bench held that
uploading the FIR online would help the
affected parties to move the courts for
redress with suitable pleas.
13.
14. Hearing petitions filed by politicians including
Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal and
Subramanian Swamy in May 2017, Justice
Dipak Misra held reputation of a person could
not be allowed to be crucified at the altar of
the other's right of free speech.
Justice Dipak Misra ruled, "The right to
reputation is a constituent of Article 21 of the
Constitution. It is an individual's fundamental
right." The bench upheld the 156-year-old
defamation law.
15.
16. A Justice Dipak Misra bench of the
Supreme Court had made playing the
national anthem in cinema halls
mandatory in 2016. However, Justice
Dipak Misra-headed bench amended
the national anthem ruling a couple
of times making it optional in cinema
halls.

SEXUAL MISCONDUCT, HARASSMENT AND INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR
Several women journalists, including Priya
Ramani, Ghazala Wahab and Shutapa Paul and
Tushita Patel came out with detailed accounts of
alleged sexual misconduct by Akbar when he
held senior editorial positions at various media
organisations.
His defence
M J Akbar has called all the allegations against
him false and fabricated. He has further accused
Priya Ramani of "wilfully, deliberately,
intentionally and maliciously" defaming him.
19. Current status
The Editors Guild of India on Thursday, through an official
statement, requested M J Akbar to withdraw his defamation
case against journalist Priya Ramani. Akbar has also filed a
defamation case in Delhi's Patiala House court against Priya
Ramani.
The court has fixed October 31 for the next hearing.
Meanwhile, 20 women journalists have come out in support
of their colleagues and urged the court to hear their
testimonies against Akbar. On Wednesday, Akbar resigned
as minister of state for external affairs following the spate of
sexual misconduct accusations leveled by several women
against him.
20. Our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru
said, "you can tell the condition of a nation
by looking at the status of its women".
Our country is on the high roads of
success, but still for a women her life is a
battle for survival and dignity from her
birth to her death.

25. “women cannot be trusted”
“women shouldn’t vote”
“women should stay in the kitchen.”
A division of the United Nations that deals
with gender equality has revealed a new
campaign that used Google's search bar
to show shocking negative attitudes
toward women.
26.
27.
28.
29.
30. The campaign shows 4
pictures of women with the
search results blocking their
mouths, giving a powerful
statement about gender
inequality.
31. They found searches were made for
“women should”," "women shouldn't,"
"women cannot" and "women need
to." The eye opening results include
"women shouldn't have rights" and
"women need to be put in their
place.“ (Taylor, V., 2013).
32. Much has to be done with our society
and media and the injustice of gender
inequality. Girls and women
struggling for equal pay, positions,
title, respect, and still fighting certain
communities for the rights over their
own bodies.
33. Solutions would be fostering healthy attitudes and
ending discrimination for a better social view on
women.
Teaching our children at a young age to value girls and
women and treat them with respect.
Abuse in any form for being female is not acceptable
and against the moral code and law.
Education – Literacy. Every girl and woman has a right
to read and write and be an active member of society.
Equal Pay - Women can do most work equally the
same, if not better (depending on the job) as men, so
wages
should reflect the job and performance, not if you are
male or female.
34. Basic Healthcare, especially in under developed
countries.
Talking about it, ending stereotypes and discrimination
that will benefit our children now, and for a better future.
Sponsor a child in another country to ensure they get
education, food and a place to live.
Education in the workplace about sexual harassment so
women know they can come forward to report safely.
Volunteers! People willing to give their time to help those
in need, especially building schools and teaching abroad.
