Riaphyllin syrup contains theophylline, a bronchodilator and smooth muscle relaxant used to treat symptoms of chronic asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. It works by relaxing airway and blood vessel smooth muscles through inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and restlessness. The drug interacts with many other medications and certain herbal supplements, requiring dosage adjustments. It should be used cautiously in patients with cardiac or liver conditions. Overdose can cause seizures and arrhythmias and is treated with activated charcoal or gastric lavage.
