Present Tense 
The present tense describes an action in the present, routines, facts, events that are 
scheduled. 
Verb stem – (play) 
To Play 
First person singular I play 
Second person singular You play 
Third person singular He/she/it plays 
First person plural We play

Add an ‘s’ for third person singular 
Irregulars 
· Verbs that end in consonant then ‘y’ (study, try, marry, fly, cry)  ‘ies’ 
· Verbs that end in ‘o’, ‘ss’, ‘z’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘x’ (go, catch, pass, wash, teach, fix) 
 ‘es’

Present Progressive tense (Present Continuous) 
This tense is used to show an action that is happening now, a continuing action. 
To be + verb stem ing

Past Tense 
The past tense is used to talk about the past. 
Normally we add ‘ed’ to the verb stem.

Irregulars 
· Verbs ending in ‘e’ just add ‘d’. Eg. (to live  lived) 
· Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant (stop, plan, admit, refer), 
double the last consonant and add ‘ed’. Eg. (to stop  stopped) 
· Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant that have two syllables 
(happen, enter, offer, suffer), do not double the last consonant, just add ‘ed’. 
Eg. (to happen  happened) 
· Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + L (travel, marvel), double the ‘l’ and 
add ‘ed’ (to travel  travelled) UK FORM
