1. Reverend William Haynes
1850 -1933
W i l l i a m Haynes was b o m o n the Haynes Plantation near Murfreesboro,
T e n n e s s e e . A p l a n t a t i o n o f a p p r o x i m a t e l y f o u r h u n d r e d ( 4 0 0 ) acres
w h i c h h e l a t e r o w n e d a f t e r i t c h a n g e d h a n d s a n d b e c a m e k n o w n as t h e
D a l t o n Place. H e w a s the son o f the plantation o w n e r and a slave
mother. E v e n t h o u g h he experienced m a n y disadvantages o f the slavery
s y s t e m as a y o u t h , h e a l s o w a s t h e r e c i p i e n t o f s o m e a d v a n t a g e s t h a t f e w
slaves w e r e able t o enjoy. H i s father t o o k a n active interest i n his
u p b r i n g i n g and w a s consequently h e l d i n h i g h esteem b y his son. A s a
result o f his father's i n v o l v e m e n t i n his "rearing" he received an
education tempered w i t h a strong ethical upbringing. T h i s "upbringing"
shaped his life and enabled h i m t o become a l a w y e r , author, preacher,
pastor, educator, and a m a n o f h i g h m o r a l character. R e v e r e n d H a y n e s
w a s a pioneer m i n i s t e r w i t h the church being closer t o his heart than
anyone or anything i n his w h o l e life.

S c h o o l . T h i s s c h o o l l a t e r b e c a m e k n o w n as F o r d G r e e n e S c h o o l . H e w a s t h e o n l y s o n t o b e c o m e a
p r e a c h e r . T h i s s o n a l s o s e r v e d as p a s t o r at S y l v a n S t r e e t B a p t i s t c h u r c h i n 1 9 3 6 w h e r e h i s f a t h e r
p a s t u r e d . T h i s f i r s t m a r r i a g e a l s o p r o d u c e d a d a u g h t e r w h o d i e d at a n e a r l y age. R e v . H a y n e s p r e a c h e d
her eulogy and "rescued" t w o y o u n g "orphaned" girls o n the same day, w h o m he and his second w i f e
raised.
T h e s e c o n d m a r r i a g e t o a w o m a n h e r e f e r r e d t o as " B a b e " p r o d u c e d e i g h t c h i l d r e n , b u t e l e v e n c h i l d r e n
w e r e raised b y the couple. Jannie and M a t t i e K a t e Carter, the y o u n g girls rescued b y h i m , J i m and eight
o t h e r s w e r e r a i s e d as n a t u r a l b r o t h e r s a n d sisters. T h e i r c h i l d r e n w e r e W i l l i a m H a r r i s o n H a y n e s ( B i l l ) ,
Arthur Vertrease Haynes (Tot), Etta Lee (Ted), Robert (Bob), Frank, B o y d W i l s o n ( B . W . ) , Theodore
(Peakye) and Roger.

Parenting skills possessed b y R e v . H a y n e s w e r e said b y his son, A r t h u r i n his b o o k . Scars o f
Segregation, t o be p a t t e m e d after that o f his p a t e m a l father. T h e "slave d r i v e r " m e n t a l i t y o f his
plantation father w a s evidenced i n the rearing o f his o w n children. M a n y o f the l e a m e d values o f his
y o u t h eamed h i m the reputation o f being a s t e m and strict disciplinarian. T h o s e under his r o o f l e a m e d
e a r l y t h a t h e w a s t h e h e a d o f h i s h o u s e h o l d a n d l e a m e d t o r e s p e c t h i m as " c h i e f o f t h e f a m i l y .
Sometimes this lesson was brought h o m e i n the "woodshed" located behind the house, using a buggy
w h i p as t h e c h o s e n i n s t m m e n t t o d i s c i p l i n e t h e c h i l d r e n , p a r t i c u l a r l y t h e b o y s .
T h e y l i v e d i n a ten r o o m " b u n g a l o w " w i t h an indoor toilet. H i s children w e r e expected to attended
s c h o o l a n d get a n e d u c a t i o n , b u t , t h e y w e r e a l s o e x p e c t e d t o h o l d j o b s i n t h e r e a l w o r l d o f w o r k . A s

f r o m his slavery days that made h i m intolerant o f the concept o f "play".
R e v e r e n d H a y n e s had three great loves: S y l v a n Street B a p t i s t C h u r c h ; the S u n d a y S c h o o l P u b l i s h i n g
Board, w h e r e he e a m e d the m a j o r part o f his i n c o m e and R o g e r W i U i a m s U n i v e r s i t y . H e w a s said to
have l i v e d his life i n such a w a y that he w o u l d put n o t h i n g i n his life before his church or his m i n i s t r y .
W i l l i a m Haynes was a m a n w h o s e v i s i o n o f " w h a t should be" w a s far reaching. O n e o f his major
accomplishments was being the p r i m a r y person responsible for the r e m o v a l o f
O f t h e R o g e r W i l l i a m s U n i v e r s i t y ( o r i g i n a l l y k n o w n as W a l d e n C o l l e g e f r o m t h e P e a b o d y - V a n d e r b i l t
area across t h e r i v e r t o t h e p r e s e n t s i t e o f t h e n o w A m e r i c a n B a p t i s t C o l l e g e s i t e l o c a t e d o n W o r l d
Baptist Center Blvd. T h i s property was originally o w n e d by R e v . Haynes. A v i s i o n for furthering
education o f the " N e g r o C h i l d r e n " o f eastem D a v i d s o n C o u n t y w a s the basis for the f o u n d i n g o f H a y n e s
S c h o o l . I n 1 9 3 1 , H a y n e s S c h o o l o p e n e d as a n e l e m e n t a r y s c h o o l l o c a t e d o n l a n d o r i g i n a l l y s o l d t o t h e
D a v i d s o n C o u n t y B o a r d o f E d u c a t i o n for five hundred dollars ( $ 5 0 0 ) . I n later years, the remainder o f
tract w a s donated for a h i g h school and f o o t b a l l field.
Reverent Haynes w a s a realtor w h o believed that " e v e r y b o d y needs a h o m e o f his o w n " this b e l i e f led
h i m to b u y l a n d for selling and d e v e l o p i n g . C o n s e q u e n t l y , m a n y areas i n the section o f the c o u n t y w h e r e
h e l i v e d c a r r y h i s n a m e as a p a r t o f t h e i r h i s t o r y , i . e . , H a y n e s M e a d e , H a y n e s H e i g h t s , H a y n e s M a n o r ,
Haynes Garden and Haynes Park.
C o n c e r n s f o r c o n d i t i o n s t h a t a f f e c t e d o u r r a c e as a w h o l e a n d p a r t i c u l a r l y t h o s e o f t h e e d u c a t i o n a l a n d
religious c o m m u n i t y led h i m to be a pioneer i n the m o v e t o obliterate illiteracy. T h i s w a s evident i n the
t e a c h i n g o f m e m b e r s o f h i s c o n g r e g a t i o n s w h e r e h e p a s t o r e d , as w e l l o f p e r s o n s o f a s s o c i a t i o n s i n m r a l
areas o f t h e state, w h i l e h e s e r v e d as t h e E x e c u t i v e S e c r e t a r y t o b e c o m e m o r e e d u c a t e d . H e a l o n g w i t h
A t t o r n e y S o l o m o n P . H a r r i s i n s t i t u t e d a p u b l i c a t i o n e n t i t l e d " T h e B a p t i s t V o i c e , " a i m e d at e d u c a t i n g
members o f the d e n o m i n a t i o n across the county.
T h e H a y n e s F a m i l y h i s t o r y s h o w s t h a t R e v . H a y n e s n o t o n l y p r e a c h e d t o h i s f l o c k , b u t h e a l s o a c t e d as a
f a t h e r f i g u r e . H e a c t e d as t h e " b a n k e r " f o r t h e m e m b e r s o f h i s c o n g r e g a t i o n s , h o l d i n g t h e i r m o n e y a n d
helping t h e m l e a m the skill o f saving and w i t h " w h a t e v e r little business t h e y had to transact." T h i s
p r a c t i c e l e d h i m t o b e s e l e c t e d as a m e m b e r o f t h e B o a r d o f D i r e c t o r s f o r t h e C i t i z e n s S a v i n g s B a n k a n d

was n a m e d pastor emeritus a p o s i t i o n he h e l d u n t i l his death i n 1933.
T h e R e v e r e n d M r . H a y n e s w a s a n asset t o h i s r a c e , a n d w a s h i g h l y r e s p e c t e d b y t h o s e w h o k n e w h i m .
