Yukari Sakata:
In closing this book I would like to reflect on the roles of us three – Jorge
Martín García, Isabel Gutierrez Sanchez and I, all strangers/outsiders to
Athens who designed this framework of collaboration. By borrowing from the
legend of Odyssey in Greek mythology, we set the ambitious goal of creating
a map as a means to fight contemporary crisis. 20 individuals in the Greek
art scene today – artists, actors, curators, and gallerists, along with one
Japanese actor staying in Athens, expressed their support to this artistic
statement and agreed to collaborate anonymously. In this way we succeeded in
technically relating our presence in Athens to the project. However, what
contradictions and conflicts did our intervention in the city to undertake
a project involving local people actually entail? By elaborating on this
matter I seek to explore another interesting Athenian reality that was not
narrated in any of the conversations with participants. This project, of art,
is materialized in the gallery space through three mutually complementary
elements –‘map,’‘video’and‘text’including this book. While continually
sharing them, Jorge, Isabel and I each took on different roles in the
creating process. In my view, what appeared in the eyes of the visitor as an
output was merely a method to visualize the project, while the‘body’of the
work was in‘participation’itself.
I attended all the meetings with participants and filmed, in my role
to compose a symbolic 1-minute video from the site-specific scenery and time
that inevitably fall out in the process of mapping the conversation. As a
director, I usually make theater or performances in Japan. My method deals
with people’s live bodies to give an interpretation to existing narratives
or texts. Therefore I prefer, as a basic premise, the myriad actions of
people to be in a lively state. My biggest internal conflict in this
project was that the conversion of conversations to maps meant heartlessly
killing the spontaneity and lively feelings that occurred in the encounter.
Participants connected via Facebook and met, with their bodies, at a certain
time and place. This series of actions was essentially performance to me.
Yet the enormous amount of work in order to document it – audio recording,
filming, transcription and layout – made all the lively excitement disappear.
Furthermore, to witness a human being existing now and here become Nobody,
or an anonymity that represents absence, evoked a close resemblance to
the rite of death. The fragments of text inscribed on the map held the
cold homogeneity of a burial marker. I continued to struggle against this
documentation process, feeling growing antagonism toward the collective map
we invented.
However, the map, obviously, is not to be blamed. By virtue of its
universality, maps have maintained crucial roles in realms such as physical
geography and meteorology, as well as in sociology or anthropology. They have
facilitated the development of transportation, tourism, and architecture in
urban cities. Also, as implied in this project’s concept, maps have always
been indispensable for military strategies. In principle, information on maps
are true and trustworthy. Maps offer space for imagination for those with the
literacy to read them. It was Jorge Martín García who first devised the idea
of giving graphic representation to an unknown monstrous crisis, by employing
those pre-established qualities of maps. By placing a‘map’at the center of
the project, he attempted to build an architecture to hypothesize our current
location, potential choices, and paths leading to the future.
From the time we met, Jorge has been an important partner in my
creative work. But our preferences are often oriented in opposite directions
– I make judgements in order to move ahead practically, whereas he leaves
various possibilities open; I trim off elements to sharpen, whereas he seeks
to create a tray to accommodate more elements. The negotiation between our
conflicting sensitivities guide us to finding new methods – a process we
always enjoy. After presenting this project, Jorge, who was committed to
map-editing in the studio, regretted that he had to miss many chances of
witnessing the encounters on the street. Ideally, he would have opted to
accompany us to all conversations, involve more participants in the map-

making process, and encourage discussion from the numerous open-end questions
that appeared on it. Contrary to that will, however, to take responsibility
of the outcome within the project’s time constraint, he had to be empowered
to make decisions in composing the map. Isabel and I also experienced
loneliness in each of our efficiently distributed roles in the collaboration;
in different places, we all struggled with the new ideal of agency.
The project as a whole was greatly influenced by Isabel Gutierrez
Sanchez. In many instances she took on the role of a spokesperson, explaining
its concept clearly to all participants, managing appointments, moderating
the conversations as well as transcribing a large part of the recordings. It
actually all started from the fact that Isabel had been in Athens for long-
term ethnographic fieldwork. Her interest first inspired Jorge, then myself.
As an open platform, this project offered equally the right to freedom of
participation, the right to choose, and the right to exercise creativity.
In my view, it reflected Isabel’s deep respect for people, her ethics and
methods in academic research. Nonetheless, I also believe that we ourselves
were entangled in this political correctness of freedom and equality. Halfway
through the project, as more participants joined, Isabel became increasingly
exhausted from setting out repeatedly for conversations and documenting them.
If there were 10 participants, each conversation would account for one tenth
of the whole map, whereas 20 participants would mean double the workload
but half the proportion of each story to the map. A fair and open platform
carries a certain trap – the more effort made, or the more voices collected,
mean the value of each story in the exhibited work becomes dispersed. It may
even result in diminishing the significance of participation for creators.
At one point Isabel suggested we stop accepting participants, as we had
already conducted enough conversations. Jorge also agreed to downscale,
but I could not agree. We had already sent the candidates our statement
to call for participation. Having made the initial decision to be open to
all possibilities, we could not close afterward. The candidates were free
to participate, and we were only to accept. So we chose to keep working,
despite the exhaustion, and struggle with the political correctness of this
participatory project.
As each of our struggles described above – of Jorge, Isabel and
mine – show, this project fought with recording, solitude and exhaustion
while bearing within itself various distortions. None of us were strangers
anymore. Our fight was not fiction. The continuing crisis in Athens was the
monster we, Nobody, envisaged. 10 years from the Greek financial collapse,
the critical condition is still very present, taking different forms such
as stringent austerity measures and mass influx of migrants and refugees,
causing tension within the society. Nevertheless, wasn’t the real monster
we were fighting the‘existential crises’of nameless, placeless Nobodys
that overflow from these contemporary social environments? This project,
aimed at creating flexible encounters among anonymous people seeking new
horizons to live in this age, was supported by conversation – a primitive
way of communication which allows the exchange and accumulation of people’s
experience, thought and information. What was left after the struggle was not
a map to navigate, but to question. Who are we? Where do we live? Where do
we go? What do we do? The legible sculpture floated in the air like a ghost
of massive recordings, posing these existential questions. This project will
continue, waiting for a time in the future to transform and meet new creators
in a different, or perhaps the same place. What monster will we fight next? I
am truly excited and curious to find out.

Jorge Martín:
Now that I can look back to what happened in Athens with some distance, I
would like to make a brief reflection about the project and some of the
issues that have come up as crucial elements from my point of view.
THE PLACE. The city of Athens was taken as a starting point. The decision
of making a project in Athens was born from our desire of coming together
and this is how we have conceived the place, as a collision of different
trajectories. From my point of view, it is this condition of coming together
of different people which makes the place, more than the static and immutable
ideas associated to a physical geographical point. However, these two
conceptions have been always present during the project as in different
layers. Sometimes the process of being creating a place was more relevant
while some others, the feeling of being in a well stablished and unchangeable
place was more prevalent. this tension have been present throughout the
whole project and has presented us important questions: what is a place in
our days? Is it possible to build a place through collaboration?
STRATEGY OF COLLABORATION. Following the intuition of creating a place, the
necessity of designing an apparatus of collaboration was evident. The way
people come together is always thanks to an apparatus that facilitates the
encounter. In the case of our project, the encounter was produced thanks to
some conscious decisions, like the rule of choosing a place in Athens and
a word in the text, but also there were some parts of this apparatus that
weren’t planned but were nevertheless an important part of the process. For
example, the way of communicating among us(facebook, wassap,etc), where we
were living , the spaces where we could work, the institutions that could
help us ,the People that we were getting to know on the way. From my point
of view, it is this liveness of the project which makes it interesting. The
idea of being able to build a precarious strategy that is open to incorporate
different inputs and adapt.
HIERARCHIES. This building of the apparatus posed questions that had to
do with the politics of the place that we were creating. The position of
everyone in relation to this fictional“we”was difficult to predict. Our
desire for horizontality was challenged by the fact of the different roles
that were created by the strategy designed.
REPRESENTATION. These questions were especially relevant in relation to
the representational aspect. Our project intended to unite the process of
creating a fictional place with its representation. However, who decided what
to include and how to build the map, were questions with not an easy answer.
There was always a desire to incorporate more agency in the process, to
imagine a real collective space
UNITY AND MULTIPLICITY. It is this will to incorporate the multiple stories,
point of views, interpretations which were at the base of the project, but
at the same time, we wanted to generate a kind of unity, something new that
would emerge from the collision. It is in this sense that the“Nobody”came
to help us. From my point of view, it was the mask that helped us overcome
our individual identities to produce a common geography, a fictional place to
inhabit.

Isabel Gutierrez:
Nobody´s Place/Nowhere´s Map is conceived as a collaborative art project in
response to crisis –or permanent-crisis–, as a condition that pervades our
contemporary time globally but acquires and manifests with specific forms
in each different context. After the international banking crash in 2008,
as myriad and multi-dimensional crises unfolded, a crisis imaginary took
shape worldwide. This crisis imaginary has become a mechanism of production
of enclosures of the future through which the ruling powers reassert their
agency and validate their governance by foreclosing other futures –or futures
of others–. How to contest the crisis imaginary from below and open up the
possible towards other(s´) futures? How to foster a radical imagination from
the experience of crisis, yet against and beyond it?
With these primary questions in mind, we –the project´s promoters– decided
to test the following hypothesis: if we –ordinary people (if such a
category can be actually claimed)– are to emancipate from permanent-
crisis, we need to create new forms of relating to each other –new forms
and meanings of togethereness, collectivity and belonging– capable of
braking down established norms and identities. In other words, to create a
new we, inclusive and permanently in-the-making. What different“wes”can
be configured so as to regain agency amidst crisis in view of a more just
and solidary form of coexistence? What personal, social and political might
they entail? Which repercussions might they bring about? How could these new
“wes”be sustained as they remain open over time? Long discussions followed
about how to give form and materiality to this hypothesis, which emerges
embedded in the situated context of Athens –Greece´s major city, in a state
of enduring and multiple crisis for a decade–. From an initial idea that
revolved around the body as a fixed and clearly demarcated entity and how
we could challenge this understanding by creating a“no-body”or“nobody´s
body”–in the form of a collaborative sculpture out of cast pieces of body
parts of the participants–, we moved onto the idea of a map as an imaginary
representation of that space of nobody and of everybody at the same time that
we were seeking to actually construct. This shift of focus from body to map
gave rise to new questions, which would mark the development and execution of
the project until the end. Seeing the crisis imaginary as a map of/for our
contemporary world, we sought to interrogate this“given reality”as follows:
Could we think of different coordinates to redefine our contemporary map of
the possible? How could we keep this map open to indeterminacy?
In this way, the project –formulated as a political fiction to“fight”
crisis– took the shape of a multi-layered and open-ended map, whose
configuration departs from a text –an initial political statement open to
re-appropriation and transformation–, and the very city of Athens –open
to discovery and re-interpretation as well–. What“possibles”are there
in the city territory? What desires and what fears? What are the main
representations that define them? Each participant –or creator– was asked
to choose a word from the text and then a place in the city that gave a
situated meaning to the former. We –the project´s promoters– met with each
of the twenty participants in those places across Athens, and have extended
conversations in which, starting from each participant´s narration about his/
her chosen site, we sought to develop reflections around our personal and
social relationships, the places we inhabit and our relationships with them,
and our agency and capacities for transformation. Those conversations, which
were recorded and transcribed, conformed later the master-layer of the map.
The (final) outcome of the project comprised an installation and a video
piece, which were exhibited at the Athens School of Fine Art (June 2018),
as well as this booklet. However, we do not understand this outcome as the
closing of the project, for its ultimate aim is to serve as an open-source
device of construction of collective imaginaries and representations of
counter-power.
Throughout this multi-layered process a range of unsettled tensions –both
theoretical and methodological– emerged. These problematic instances, which
will remain open, could be summarised as follows:
CRISIS. Was crisis the backdrop of the project or the medium? In what ways
can we speak of crisis as a condition? How crisis has been normalised? What
can we see through the lens of our respective conceptions of crisis? Is
it fighting crisis really an emancipatory strategy? What would it mean to
integrate or to inhabit crisis in terms of building resistance?
SUBJECTIVITY AND COLLECTIVITY. I become through relating. Any subjectivity is
inherently relational. Which“wes”am I part of? What is my position? Which/
where/how are the boundaries of those“wes”? Was any new“we”configured
through the project? How was it?
REPRESENTATION AND ITS POLITICS. Maps render visible some realities while
exclude and foreclose others. However, they are always subject to radical
transformation, for the space they represent is never fixed nor closed. What
did Nobody´s Place/Nowhere´s Map finally represent? How can we keep it open-
ended?
MASK VS. BECOMING. To what extent wearing a mask –masking oneself– is
transformative? Did we attain any transformation through the project?
Body vs. Place. How do body and space relate to and affect each other? Which
boundaries separate them? How?
COLLABORATION. What sort of relationships were enacted through this project?
How much did we succeed in blurring the line between promoters, coordinator,
participants and the public?

George Stamatakis:
After a few months focusing as a coordinator of Nobody’s Place/Nowhere’s
Map (collaborative art project), we decided to present the outcomes of this
process (which has taken place and developed in Athens) at D’of Dean Panos
Charalambous Lab in Athens School of Fine Arts.
The main artists team Yukari Sakata, Isabel Gutierrez Sanchez and Jorge
Martin Garcia, respecting the special requirements and presentation needs
of the final results, undoubtedly agreed to share the show in an academic
interactive environment which is always friendly and open to the public.
During the seven days amazing presentation, we had the chance to invite the
20 participant artist in an open dialogue expecting impressions as a feedback
which successfully happened but also was open to the public with impressive
number of visitors.
Nobody´s Place/Nowhere´s Map designed to work as an open project, that seeks
to explore, to give answers on a critical topics - questions and always under
a political fiction, Next stop at Tokyo University of Arts (Geidai).
