What is Social Security -
Social security is the protection that a society provides to individual and households to ensure access
to health care and to guarantee to income security, particularly in case of old age, unemployment,
sickness, invalidity, work injury, maternity and loss of a breadwinner – International Labour
Organisation
Why Do We Need Social Security -
Employer is solely responsible for providing adequate social security coverage to workers. Social
security not only protect employees but their families too by giving financial & insurance assistance for
longer term when the breadwinner retires, dies or suffers from disability.
Social Security in India -
Countries like India & China have taken initiatives under the Social Security Scheme & large number
of Indian population is protected under the laws of social security which are as follows -
1. The Employees State Insurance Act, 1948 -
Benefits under ESIC Act- Medical benefit, Sickness benefit, Maternity benefit, Disablement benefit,
Dependent benefit, Funeral benefit etc.
2. The Employees Provident Fund & Miscellaneous Provision Act, 1952 -
Benefits under EPF Act- Provident fund, Pension, Deposit linked insurance, Nonrefundable advance
3. The Employees Compensation Act – Compensation for disability and death due to employment.
4. The Maternity Benefit Act – Paid leave for 12 weeks
