This document summarizes a research article that reviewed literature on leadership styles and value systems of school principals. The review examined the evolution of leadership approaches, transformational and transactional leadership styles, the relationship between leadership styles and organizational variables, and the relationship between value systems and leadership styles. The review found that transformational leadership improves school functioning and teaching processes. Principals with a moral value system tend towards transformational leadership, while those with pragmatic values tend towards transactional leadership. Effective leadership can result from understanding the correlations between values and styles.
