Keeping the members we have is probably the most important task we have as Chamber professionals. We do a lot of really hard work to make sure that our members understand the value the Chamber delivers. We work 50…60…sometimes 70 hours in a week to bring them events and to advocate for them at various municipality meetings. And then we cross our fingers and we hope for the best… But what if I told you there was a way to increase your retention rate that was guaranteed to work? Would you take 30 minutes out of your day to learn how to do it? Would you make it mandatory viewing for your staff? Would you invite your Board of Directors to watch it? Print an Excel spreadsheet of your ENTIRE membership, MINUS those businesses who have been members for 3 years or longer… 2. Sit down with a green highlighter and mark through each member that you KNOW is engaged at some level. In other words, folks you KNOW will be renewing again because you know they see the value the Chamber provides… 3. Pass the list and the highlighter to each staff member, one at a time, and have them mark off any members that THEY know are virtual LOCKS to renew… 4. Once everyone has identified the SAFE list, what remains is your AT RISK list. Dissect it. Assign each AT RISK member to either a Board Member, a staff person or an Ambassador and make FACE-TO-FACE contact. 5. DO NOT SELL! We’re only there to learn and to determine what actions are necessary next.
