Businesses and homes that are at risk of burglary or have a duty of care to the public are required to have installed intruder detection and fire alarm systems.The intruder or fire system has to send alarms over a communications network (such as a telephone line or mobile telephone network) to an “Alarm Receiving Centre” (ARC). An ARC is like a call centre. Operators see alarms arrive on a screen and a script tells the operator who to call to resolve the alarm. This may be a call to the police or fire brigade, or to the person who manages the remote site such as the owner of the property.The WebWay system communicates the alarm over the internet using either a “fixed line” – it a physical line using broadband technology. If the fixed line is faulty or has been tampered with by an intruder to stop it working, the alarm can be sent over the “wireless” communications path – this is the same technology we all use for mobile internet connections etc.Transmitting alarms over the internet is cheaper and faster than sending alarms over the traditional telephone line network.The WebWay system also provides valuable remote diagnostics for faults with the alarm systems and the communicaitons networks.This information can save on engineering visits providing a remote fix or first visit fix to problems (ie the engineer can arrive on site with the right equipment to fix a problem).
