This document summarizes the results of a 2017 survey conducted by FIAT/IFTA on metadata management and creation among audiovisual archives. Some key findings include: - Manual annotation is still the most common metadata creation method, used by 96% of respondents. - Harvesting metadata from production systems is also widely used, with 60% importing from planning systems. - Automatic feature extraction techniques like speech-to-text are still in early testing phases for most archives. - Combined search across different archive databases is possible for around half of respondents. - Discoverability of archive collections on external platforms like YouTube is limited. - Metadata is often tailored more for internal production needs than external discovery.
