- #2 Hi everyone. I’m proud to introduce the newest commission of Fiat/Ifta: the VUC: the Value, Use and Copyright Commission. This is the VUC: Maja (chair), Maartje (co-chair), Valentina, Natsuko, Michael, Montse, Erwin & Louise This is what we stand for. We are a very enthusiastic group of people.
- #3 What have we done so far? First of all, we’ve had the Flowchart Online Publication translated by the network of Fiat/Ifta. The flowchart provides clear insights into copyright and it can help you to determine which material in your collection is likely to be in the public domain and can be published online. This flowchart is now available in 8 languages on the FIAT/IFTA website under the Copyright tab. People from Spain, Italy, Austria, France and Brazil helped us with the translations. It was really great to see how this international network was willing and able to help us translating the flowchart. Next to that, there are also explanations of the flowchart available in 8 languages which have been checked and adapted to copyright law of the relevant country by lawyers of the relevant countries (except for the English version). Beware that copyright law differs from country to country and it's always recommendable to have your decision to publish material (open) online checked by a lawyer of your own country. - #4 You can find the flowchart and the explanations in all these languages on the website of Fiat/Ifta under Library and then under the Copyright tab.
- #5 Based on the requests the VUC received during its first expert table at the FIAT/IFTA World Conference in Venice last year, we have also published an overview of some copyright related topics under the Copyright tab on the FIAT/IFTA website, such as the legal deposit register. We would like to ask you to update this legal deposit register if you haven’t done this yet for your country. In that way, it is possible to see which countries have legal deposit legislation for printed and audiovisual materials. There is also a register available for collecting web archives under the Copyright tab. Recently, we have also posted an article on what the DSM directive (new European copyright Directive) will change for cultural heritage institutions, which is interesting to read, although your organisation might not be a cultural heritage institution. (Legal deposit is a legal requirement that a person or group submit copies of their publications to a repository.)
- #6 The VUC has also published a first case study by Sound and Vision on how the decision was made to publish a controversial Dutch propaganda war film collection open online, in which the copyright, privacy and ethical issues are being explained, as well as how the risk analysis was performed and how risks could be reduced. RAI has also published a case study under the Copyright tab and has given a presentation about this during the conference last Wednesday. More case studies will follow. We would like to encourage everyone to take a look at the website and invite them to let us know which specific information or even another case study would be helpful for Fiat/Ifta members, so we can keep up the work!
