Fun is the magic that makes the mission of camp come to life. It is through shared memories, stories, and friendships that we drive growth. Fun doesn’t have to be expensive. Join us on a whirlwind tour of 50 ridiculous and ridiculously simple program ideas. From whale wrestling to make your own backpack, let us inspire your creativity with ideas and prompts that your staff can run this summer mostly with the supplies you already have.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Restorative Justice at Camp
Restorative Justice is becoming more and more prevalent in school districts and on the national stage. Part of our job as camping professionals is helping kids learn how to solve problems and conflicts. Two summers ago we implemented a restorative justice system. The goal of the system is to heal harm, mitigate future harm and build community. By listening, removing judgement, and asking questions, we hope to help participants see what the other side is wanting. Our system is far from perfect but we have seen some amazing growth, power, and confidence grow as a result of empowering campers to solve their own conflicts. Our hope is that solving conflict this way helps campers from all different backgrounds, access peace in and equality at camp. Come dig through what restorative justice means and how it applies to camp.
1. Learn about effective ways restorative justice principles are being applied to other kids programs.
2. Discuss the merits and shortfalls of approaching conflict through a restorative lens.
3. Explore how restorative justices can create inclusion at camp.
I am a peace maker -
- I am not good at this. Actually its really hard for me.
I always want to make sure everyone is happy, I easily get caught up and take responsibly for others… just to keep the status quo
AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Pair and share: What role does conflict play in your life?
what is your personal relationship to conflict, in personal, professional situations
what kind of roles have you played in conflict , bulldozer, peacemaker, pushover.
The world is constantly giving us advice about how to avoid conflict, how to compromise, how to communicate to hid and cover up and get away from conflicts.
How to pretend that it is ok and substitute punishment, isolation and ridicule for justice and fairness
zero tolerance has failed. - stats.
What if there is a better way, the fact that Restorative justice exists and works, means that we have no excuse not to use it.
I know that at camp we are not talking about major crimes, like robbery, sexual violence, and murder… However valuing campers problems and taking the time to take them seriously will hopefully help them to value others and others problems.
ripple effect
instead of fearing conflict and avoiding it, what if we saw it as an opportunity.
What would it look like to flip the script and say conflict is a way to practice empathy, to encourage perspective taking and to build community.
Think of the problem solving skills, the innovation and the collaborative solutions that we could uncover if we thought about conflict differently
Step back and look at the broader implications and implementations of RJ.
- first nations people
- criminal justice circles to address juvenile delinquents
- circles in schools
Laura is a trained circle facilitator … sometimes the process can be ridged and we sacrifice some of the ritual to make circles accessible for all of our campers…
what you will learn during this session
how this applies to camp .
Take aways
empower kids, set up a system in which they can clearly see their own agency
- this system requires trust. Trust from campers that if they bring you conflict you will not default to punishment, blame and shame.
at stomping ground we use a series of peace circles to address conflict in our community.
the goal is to heal harm, mitigate future harm and build community.
We are not perfect. but we are constantly getting better and learning.
- Small Circle- direct conversation between parties involved.
- Medium Circle- asking for help. Pull in Panda
- Large Circle- Executive counsel. Laura, Jack, Kate.

- What happened?- Ownership, accountability.
- How do you feel?- vulnerability, sharing needs below the surface. Put down weapons of blame and accusation. Disarm conflict. Create potential for connection
- What do you need?- communication, acceptance. Ask questions, listen. Letting go of what you can not control. conflict involves change, sometimes change or loss of an idea.
- Agreement. - Boundaries create a foundation for trust.
- some circles will be reoccurring… does not mean they are failures.
we are crappy communicators
it might be hard to pass judgement on “petty" squabbles
they might have different strategies than you
they might just want to go back to playing…. and not want help
we as facilitators and directors and culture keepers have to change a few things too
dont let it cripple you, or stop you form using your judgement as a compassionate adult.
It is about looking at conflict from a different angle. seeing where your own biases judgements and frustrations come in to play. About giving ownership to the campers and seeing the bigger picture, which is how each interaction is an opportunity to help kids feel validated heard and powerful, that it is about helping each other and looking for the best in each other not for who messed up or who won or was right.
- It might not really be about who got out in Gaga, or that Pepper stepped on Eliza’s stuff
- it is about needing respect, needing independence, needing to feel competent, needing to be likable, might be about your identity
-Who has felt stuck in conflict?… you keep going around and around like in washing machine. You keep making the same points, and hearing the same counter attacks.
- It might feel nice in the moment to hold your ground. but in the end is ultimately unsatisfying.
- it is easy to get stuck in JUSTIFICATION- the belief that you are blameless, that you do not have to change, someone else does.
- Drop the rope
- creating change in a relationship requires being vulnerable, taking ownership, clearly communicating, accepting ownership and defining boundaries.
- it requires recognizing that you are RESPONSE-ABLE. able to give a response
ONE WEEK
one week, at the most four, to try and value campers so that they might go out there and value others.
NJ SENATOR
What if when Rocco is the Senator of NJ, he thinks back to camp how we deal with conflict and decides to reform the criminal justice system in his state.
Or when Luna is a 3rd grade teacher and instead of sending the trouble maker in her class to the office, again, she spends the time to work it out, restoratively.
Or when Eleanor is the CEO of a small tech start up in Silicon valley she treats her employees with the same kids of respect she remembers feeling at camp.
