The respiratory system is composed of a respiratory tract that allows for the passage of air. It involves the processes of inhalation, where air is taken into the body through the nostrils and nasal cavity, and exhalation, where air is expelled from the lungs. The major parts of the respiratory system include the pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. In the alveoli, oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the lungs and bloodstream through breathing and respiration. Common disorders of the respiratory system include asthma, emphysema and pneumonia.
