Gallifreyan Academy of Bowties - Research Presentation
1. An Innovative Solution to Enhance
Gifted and Talented Math Education in
Elementary and Middle Schools

2. The FLL World Class Research Project
Choose a topic that we are passionate about or always
wanted to learn
Create an innovative solution that improves the
learning experience
Share our solution with others
• We are passionate about Mathematics!
• Question: We are concerned that not all Gifted and
Talented students have access to the right programs
to help them excel in their studies.
• We are building an innovative solution to challenge and motivate
Gifted and Talented students to stay interested in Mathematics
Our Task
3. Why is it Important?
United States has fallen to the 6th place in Global
Innovation Index
There is indeed an acute shortage of US workers with
STEM skills – as reflected by an authoritative research
published by the Brookings Institute
At the same time 73% of the teachers surveyed by
National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC)
conceded: “Too often, the brightest students are bored
and under-challenged in school – we’re not giving them a
sufficient chance to thrive”
4. Challenges Faced by “Gifted” Students
A Gifted Child has advanced capacity to learn and apply
what is learned, as compared to his or her peers (as per
the definition from NAGC)
This advanced capacity requires modifications to the
regular curriculum to ensure these children are
challenged
Many gifted students may be so far ahead of their same-
age peers that they know more than half of the grade-
level curriculum before the school year begins
Gifted students may become bored or frustrated in an
unchallenging classroom situation causing them to lose
interest, learn bad study habits, or distrust the school
environment

6. Ingredients for an Effective Solution
Interesting and
Motivating
• If children
can’t figure
out solution to
a problem
right away,
then they
might think
they are
stupid or
don’t have
the gift or the
knack for
Math
Right
Technique
• Interleave
subject
matter to fit
the mind's
natural
capacity to
detect
patterns and
detect
changes in
the sequence
Right Pace
• Everybody
learns at a
different pace
• Students
must be able
to set their
own pace that
suits their
learning style
Practice
• Learning
Math is so
much like
learning a
musical
instrument
• It needs a
little bit of
mental
practice every
day
7. Our Solution
Exceeding Expectations Challenges is a website
created by us to help the students and teachers
The central feature of our website is a cool game that
is both Engaging and Educational
The teachers can input Math problems in a problem
bank
As kids play the Game, they are presented these
problems and they must solve them as part of the
game play
8. Our Solution
Like most of the modern day games, the player has to
reach a goal (like in Mario games, the goal is to save
Peach)
Each level is a great adventure, where kids solve
challenges to acquire cool powers to help them beat the
villains
The game storyline is based on themes that kids are
familiar with: Doctor Who, Star Wars, Hunger Games,
Star Trek, Harry Potter and Percy Jackson
We have studied and questioned ourselves about what
makes the games we play so much fun. We have
integrated all those ideas in our game
9. What makes our approach unique
Khan Academy is a great tool for education. We bet many
of you use his videos. It is a great tool, but can be
monotonous
Also, the little quizzes on Khan Academy tend to be
annoying, and not that much fun
Other websites like Udacity or Coursera are more for
higher education. They use block learning methodology
and cannot ensure students will remember the
information over long term
The way we integrate interleaving of subject matter is
extraordinary and unique from many other websites
10. What makes our approach unique
Problem with most educational websites is that they
are either too much math or too much game
For example, Cool Math Games and Hooda Math are
websites that kids frequently visit. Hardly any games
are related to something based on actual curriculum
Funbrain does a better job of integrating math into
their website, but they don’t follow standard curriculum
On our site we follow the Common Core curriculum
and give teachers the ability to pick the problems they
want their students to solve
