Politics is and always has been an influencing factor in education. Today, for
example, most early childhood education programs are controlled by groups that
typically follow the national agenda. As we examine the lives and ideas of a few
important educational philosophers, think about what pedagogy is and how politics
and political views, including your own, affect teaching and learning.

The Underlying Issues
How has politics influenced education over time? How is education part of the
political process? What were the major contributions of some important educational
philosophers and how have they impacted modern education? This week we will
explore possible answers to these questions as we take a closer look at the
educational philosophies of John Locke (1632 – 1704), Horace Mann (1796 – 1859),
Jane Addams (1860 – 1935), and Paulo Freire (1921 – 1997).
As you read this week, keep the following issues in mind:

The Underlying Issues
How has politics influenced education over time? How is education part of the
political process? What were the major contributions of some important educational
philosophers and how have they impacted modern education? This week we will
explore possible answers to these questions as we take a closer look at the

What if for your entire life, the image that others held of you was colored by the way in which
you were conceived?
In some ways, that’s what it has been like for Louise Brown, who was the world’s first “test
tube baby,” born by in vitro fertilization (IVF), a procedure in which fertilization of a mother’s
egg by a father’s sperm takes place outside of the mother’s body.
Louise was a preschooler when her parents told her about how she was conceived, and
throughout her childhood she was bombarded with questions. It became routine to explain to
her classmates that she in fact was not born in a laboratory.
As a child, Louise sometimes felt completely alone. “I thought it was something peculiar to
me,” she recalled. But as she grew older, her isolation declined as more and more children were
born in the same manner.
In fact, today Louise is hardly isolated. More than 5 million babies have been born using
the procedure, which has become almost routine. And at the age of 28, Louise became a mother
herself, giving birth to a baby boy name Cameron—conceived, by the way, in the old-fashioned
way (Falco, 2012; ICMRT, 2012).

Minoan Crete was a major civilization in its time, but several theories have been advanced to explain its demise, including speculations associating it with mythical Atlantis. What were the causes of Minoan Civilization's decline?
Great Zimbabwe is an enormous complex of structures in East Africa. Since the builders and occupants left no written records, several theories have developed as to the identity of its builders and the functions of the structures. Which theory makes the most sense?

One afternoon at work, Natalie received a phone call from her daughter’s teacher. It seemed that Brandi had got into trouble, and Natalie would need to meet with Brandi’s teacher and the school principal. Natalie could not imagine what the trouble could be. Brandi was a straight-A student, played soccer, and was part of the school band. She also helped out with chores at home. On the way to the school, Natalie decided she would not jump to conclusions but would hear Brandi’s side of the story. Then, she would let Brandi have a piece of her mind!
At school, Natalie met the school principal; Brandi’s teacher; and a crying, red-eyed Brandi. Brandi and two other girls had stolen a pack of cigarettes from a teacher’s purse and were caught smoking in the woods behind the school. Worse, one of the other girls had stolen the teacher’s prescription medication, though Brandi said she did not know anything about that. The principal and teacher said that this was a serious breach of trust and was against school policy. They knew Brandi and were “shocked” that she was involved in this activity. In private consultation with Natalie, they said that Brandi was involved with the wrong crowd, but there was still time to intervene before she developed a pattern of bad behavior.
Natalie left the meeting angry with Brandi, but also feeling guilty and responsible. She had been working extra hours and was often busy with her schoolwork. Perhaps she had neglected Brandi or missed important warning signs. She would ground Brandi, but more importantly, she would pay much closer attention to whom she befriended and where she went. Natalie decided she would establish a schedule where she would help the girls’ do their homework.
Natalie felt tired. After all the years of guidance and parenting, how could “two stupid tweens” undo all her hard work? She felt she had worked hard teaching Brandi and Jenny how to make good decisions and to know right from wrong. She worried what the next ten years would bring. She pondered the possibilities of other peer influences, alcohol, drugs, and boys.

Assignment 1: Discussion—Biomes, Development, Pollution, and You
Each part of the United States has at least one ecological crisis based on location, biome, and industrialization pattern. For example, the Midwest was once a prairie with very fertile soil. However, when people realized that with the right watering and drainage system this area could become productive farmland, there arose ecological problems. The conversion of the prairie to farmland is the root cause of many ecological problems in this region.
Regardless of what biome you consider, humans have likely had an impact on the ecology of that area.
For this assignment, identify the biome in which you live. The following are a few examples of biomes:
Tropical rainforests: This biome has high average temperatures, high moisture levels, and high species diversity.
Prairies: The prairies have grassland-variable temperatures, variable moisture levels—depending on proximity to mountain ranges—and are mainly dominated by grasses and ungulate herbivores.
Deserts: These biomes have hotter average temperatures, low moisture, lower species diversity, and a composition of species limited mainly to those that are adapted to hot temperatures.
Temperate forests: The temperate forests have variable temperatures, high moisture levels, and higher species diversity.
Taigas: These biomes have colder average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and lower species diversity.
Tundras: The tundras have cold average temperatures, low moisture levels, and low species diversity.
Coral reefs: These biomes have high average temperatures and high species diversity.
Open oceans: These biomes have a wide range of temperatures and species diversity varies.
Chaparrals: The chaparrals have higher average temperatures, lower moisture levels, and are dominated mainly by grasses and shrubs.
Alpines: These biomes have low average temperatures, low precipitation, and receive high ultraviolet (UV) rays due to high elevation.
Using the readings for this module, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, respond to the following:
Explain how humans have impacted the biome in which you live. List the types of environmental damage that have been caused and the species that have been impacted.
Describe the major pollution issues for your biome, and elaborate on the sources of this pollution.
List any species that have become extinct in this biome.
Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references.
Write your initial response in approximately 300–350 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
