RESEARCH STATEMENT: PROFESSOR SHAMSUDDIN
Ex Professor & Head, Department of Metallurgical Engineering
Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University
Varanasi-221005, India
Dr. Shamsuddin’s professional career spanning over 40 years has been an optimal blend of
devotion to teaching and brilliance in research and is distinguished by a relentless pursuit of
excellence. He has made substantial and lasting contributions in the fields of Chemical
Thermodynamics, Chemical-Extractive Metallurgy and Electron Transport Properties of
Materials. The candidate’s dedicated and purposeful researches during the past 40 years have
resulted in substantial and high quality research output in the fields of Chemical/
Metallurgical Thermodynamics and Chemical/Extractive Metallurgy. Some of the important
contributions are highlighted below:
1. Thermodynamics of Chalcogenides
** With the aid of the locally designed and fabricated instruments thermodynamic properties
of a number of binary and ternary chalcogenides were precisely measured and successfully
correlated with their structure and bonding.
** The candidate predicted that the solid solutions in the system PbTe-GeTe were unstable at
low temperatures and resolved the controversy regarding the phase equilibria. Single phase
alloys of this system produced by Liquisol Quenching were shown to undergo spinodal
decomposition for the first time making elegant use of diverse techniques such as X-ray
diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy.
Professor Shamsuddin and his group determined the thermodynamic properties of CdS,
CdSe, CdTe, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnTe and HgTe through precise experimentation using two
independent techniques viz. electrochemical and calorimetric methods. Activity
measurements have also been carried out in numerous quasi-binary systems (e.g. CdSe-CdTe,
HgTe-CdTe, PbSe-PbTe, ZnTe-CdTe and CdSe-CdS) using molten salt electrolyte galvanic
cell technique.
** Based on in depth studies they ranked for the first time the above binary chalcogenides in
decreasing order of stability:
ZnS > ZnSe > CdS > CdSe > ZnTe > CdTe > HgTe
** From analyses of several thermodynamic parameters the candidate conclusively
established that the HgTe-CdTe system is an isomorphous system.
** Professor Shamsuddin’s extensive researches and critical thermodynamic analyses on the
system CdSe-CdTe have established for the first time that the said system exhibits positive
deviation from Raoult’s law, does not obey regular solution model and consists of two
terminal regions [I.0  xCdTe  0.35 and II. 0.45  xCdTe  1.0] which are connected by narrow
transient region [0.35  xCdTe  0.45], where thermodynamic behaviour is complex. The
thermodynamic data obtained are consistent with the structural changes in the system. The
results have been discussed in the light of Darken’s stability and excess stability parameters
and physical properties, viz., energy gap and magnetic susceptibility.
2. Thermodynamics of Metal - Hydrogen Systems
** Investigations on metal hydrides are highly relevant from energy viewpoint.
Thermodynamics of solubility of hydrogen and deuterium in the alloys of palladium with Au,
Cu, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn were measured by a novel combination of calorimetric - equilibrium
technique. Using these, the candidate has demonstrated that the nature of the hydrogen-
hydrogen interaction in Pd-Au, Pd-Ag and Pd-Mn alloys changes from attractive to repulsive
at around 30-40 atomic percent of Au, Ag or Mn in respective alloy systems.
3. Thermodynamics of Ternary Alloys
** Thermodynamic investigations of binary and ternary alloys of importance were conducted
by electrochemical and calorimetric techniques. The former technique yielded the partial
molar free energy whereas the latter the partial molar enthalpy. The combination of the two
data resulted the partial molar entropy
4. Sulphide-Oxide Reaction Kinetics
** The candidate evolved a new method for preparation of copper-nickel alloy powders by
sulphide-oxide interactions. He studied the kinetics of Ni3S2-Cu2O reaction under reduced
pressure, characterized the rate laws and identified the rate-determining steps. He then
standardized conditions for preparation of alloys over the entire composition range.
5. Unranium Recovery from Uraniferrous Phosphorite
** On invitation from Professor H.Y. Sohn and Professor M.E. Wadsworth of the
University of Utah, the candidate studied feasibility of selective dissolution of uranium from
uraniferrous phosphorites and copper from deeply burried porphyry copper deposits. Based
on extensive thermochemical and economic analyses he established that uranium can be
recovered from phosphorite rock economically only as a byproduct of large capacity fertilizer
plants. His critical assessment of U-P thermodynamics also demonstrates that selective
leaching of uranium is not possible in view of the high stability of several U-P compounds
present in the phosphorites.
6. Treatment of Complex Sulphide Concentrate
Considerable amounts of complex sulphide ores of copper and zinc remain unexploited in
different parts of the world due to the lack of suitable economic extraction technology. For
example, the Sikkim Mining Corporation (India) produces off-grade sulphide concentrates of
copper, zinc and lead. Its chalocopyrite concentrate has significant quantities of Zn and Pb.
As no suitable method is available for treatment of such complex concentrates R & D work
was taken up.
** Three approaches, viz. salt roasting, sulphation roasting and oxidative chloride leaching
were studied in detail. An in depth thermodynamic analysis was conducted on aspects
concerning construction of the relevant M-S-O phase diagrams and equilibria considerations
on numerous reactions that take place in salt roasting. Besides conventional experiments, in-
situ temperature measurements, X-ray diffraction on reacted products and complete analyses
of leach liquors, residues, condensates and off-gases were carried out in salt/sulphation
roasting. The work clearly demonstrated the complexity of the salt roasting process
chemistry.
** His researches on the leaching kinetics of a complex sulphide concentrate in chloride
media provide an insight on the dissolution behaviour of copper, zinc and lead and the
inertness of pyrite. By a critical comparison, he showed that the Salt Roasting-Water Leach
approach will be best suited for the treatment of the Sikkim Complex Sulphide Concentrate.
A pioneering contribution of Professor Shamsuddin had been the establishment of a
sophisticated research laboratory for measurement of thermodynamic and electron transport
properties of materials. A major goal has been the development and characterization of
compound semiconductors for electronic devices as these have gained prominence in the
recent past for applications in thermo-electric generators, lasers, infrared detectors etc.
7. Electron Transport Measurement
Researches initiated on electron transport measurements have yielded fruitful results of
practical consequence.
** Electrical Characterization of Schottky Barrier Diodes -The candidate and his group have
characterized the various parameters encountered in Ni/n-Si diodes such as ideality factor,
saturation current, barrier height, carrier concentration and interface state density. In
addition, they also studied effect of hydrogenation, thermal annealing and X-ray irradiation
on diode characteristics.
** Electrical Conductivity, Hall Coefficient, mobility and magnetic susceptibility of
GaxIn (1-x)Sb alloys have been measured as function of composition and temperature.
** Professor Shamusuddin and his group have also measured the magnetic susceptibility
behaviour of CdTexSe(1-x) and CdxHg(1-x)Te alloys. He succeeded in correlating the variation
of susceptibility as well as thermodynamic activities with composition.
** High precision measurements on the conductivity of polycrystalline CdTe in the
temperature range 300-7000
C and at the Te pressure varying from 10-5
to 10-17
atm. reveal
that p to n type transition occurs at a temperature which depend on partial pressure of
tellurium. A novel “defect model” has been proposed by him to account for the variation in
the conducting properties of cadmium telluride.
8. Studies on Ferro-magnetic Shape Memory Ni-Mn-Ga Alloys
** In recent years ferro-magnetic shape memory alloys based on Ni-Mn-Ga system have
gained prominence as technologically important materials. These alloys undergo martensitic
transformation from cubic to tetragonal on cooling from high temperature. The effect of
Mn/Ga ratio on crystal structure, phase transformation and magnetic properties were studied.
The dedicated, purposeful and goal-oriented researches of Professor Shamsuddin on
Semiconducting Chalcogenides/Intermetallics, Alloys and Sulphides Metallurgy have
resulted in a massive output of phenomenal contributions both basic and applied in nature.
As many as a SEVENTY standard and high quality papers have been published in very
reputed international journals (e.g. the Metallurgical Transactions, J. Less Common Metals,
Thermochimica Acta, High Temperature Science, J. Materials Science, Microelectronics J.,
Solid State Electronics, Materials and Metallurgical Transactions etc. SIX candidates have
obtained the coveted doctorate degree under his supervision.

Research statement

  • 1. RESEARCH STATEMENT: PROFESSOR SHAMSUDDIN Ex Professor & Head, Department of Metallurgical Engineering Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University Varanasi-221005, India Dr. Shamsuddin’s professional career spanning over 40 years has been an optimal blend of devotion to teaching and brilliance in research and is distinguished by a relentless pursuit of excellence. He has made substantial and lasting contributions in the fields of Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical-Extractive Metallurgy and Electron Transport Properties of Materials. The candidate’s dedicated and purposeful researches during the past 40 years have resulted in substantial and high quality research output in the fields of Chemical/ Metallurgical Thermodynamics and Chemical/Extractive Metallurgy. Some of the important contributions are highlighted below: 1. Thermodynamics of Chalcogenides ** With the aid of the locally designed and fabricated instruments thermodynamic properties of a number of binary and ternary chalcogenides were precisely measured and successfully correlated with their structure and bonding. ** The candidate predicted that the solid solutions in the system PbTe-GeTe were unstable at low temperatures and resolved the controversy regarding the phase equilibria. Single phase alloys of this system produced by Liquisol Quenching were shown to undergo spinodal decomposition for the first time making elegant use of diverse techniques such as X-ray diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Professor Shamsuddin and his group determined the thermodynamic properties of CdS, CdSe, CdTe, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnTe and HgTe through precise experimentation using two independent techniques viz. electrochemical and calorimetric methods. Activity measurements have also been carried out in numerous quasi-binary systems (e.g. CdSe-CdTe, HgTe-CdTe, PbSe-PbTe, ZnTe-CdTe and CdSe-CdS) using molten salt electrolyte galvanic cell technique. ** Based on in depth studies they ranked for the first time the above binary chalcogenides in decreasing order of stability: ZnS > ZnSe > CdS > CdSe > ZnTe > CdTe > HgTe ** From analyses of several thermodynamic parameters the candidate conclusively established that the HgTe-CdTe system is an isomorphous system. ** Professor Shamsuddin’s extensive researches and critical thermodynamic analyses on the system CdSe-CdTe have established for the first time that the said system exhibits positive deviation from Raoult’s law, does not obey regular solution model and consists of two terminal regions [I.0  xCdTe  0.35 and II. 0.45  xCdTe  1.0] which are connected by narrow transient region [0.35  xCdTe  0.45], where thermodynamic behaviour is complex. The thermodynamic data obtained are consistent with the structural changes in the system. The results have been discussed in the light of Darken’s stability and excess stability parameters
  • 2. and physical properties, viz., energy gap and magnetic susceptibility. 2. Thermodynamics of Metal - Hydrogen Systems ** Investigations on metal hydrides are highly relevant from energy viewpoint. Thermodynamics of solubility of hydrogen and deuterium in the alloys of palladium with Au, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn were measured by a novel combination of calorimetric - equilibrium technique. Using these, the candidate has demonstrated that the nature of the hydrogen- hydrogen interaction in Pd-Au, Pd-Ag and Pd-Mn alloys changes from attractive to repulsive at around 30-40 atomic percent of Au, Ag or Mn in respective alloy systems. 3. Thermodynamics of Ternary Alloys ** Thermodynamic investigations of binary and ternary alloys of importance were conducted by electrochemical and calorimetric techniques. The former technique yielded the partial molar free energy whereas the latter the partial molar enthalpy. The combination of the two data resulted the partial molar entropy 4. Sulphide-Oxide Reaction Kinetics ** The candidate evolved a new method for preparation of copper-nickel alloy powders by sulphide-oxide interactions. He studied the kinetics of Ni3S2-Cu2O reaction under reduced pressure, characterized the rate laws and identified the rate-determining steps. He then standardized conditions for preparation of alloys over the entire composition range. 5. Unranium Recovery from Uraniferrous Phosphorite ** On invitation from Professor H.Y. Sohn and Professor M.E. Wadsworth of the University of Utah, the candidate studied feasibility of selective dissolution of uranium from uraniferrous phosphorites and copper from deeply burried porphyry copper deposits. Based on extensive thermochemical and economic analyses he established that uranium can be recovered from phosphorite rock economically only as a byproduct of large capacity fertilizer plants. His critical assessment of U-P thermodynamics also demonstrates that selective leaching of uranium is not possible in view of the high stability of several U-P compounds present in the phosphorites. 6. Treatment of Complex Sulphide Concentrate Considerable amounts of complex sulphide ores of copper and zinc remain unexploited in different parts of the world due to the lack of suitable economic extraction technology. For example, the Sikkim Mining Corporation (India) produces off-grade sulphide concentrates of copper, zinc and lead. Its chalocopyrite concentrate has significant quantities of Zn and Pb. As no suitable method is available for treatment of such complex concentrates R & D work was taken up. ** Three approaches, viz. salt roasting, sulphation roasting and oxidative chloride leaching were studied in detail. An in depth thermodynamic analysis was conducted on aspects
  • 3. concerning construction of the relevant M-S-O phase diagrams and equilibria considerations on numerous reactions that take place in salt roasting. Besides conventional experiments, in- situ temperature measurements, X-ray diffraction on reacted products and complete analyses of leach liquors, residues, condensates and off-gases were carried out in salt/sulphation roasting. The work clearly demonstrated the complexity of the salt roasting process chemistry. ** His researches on the leaching kinetics of a complex sulphide concentrate in chloride media provide an insight on the dissolution behaviour of copper, zinc and lead and the inertness of pyrite. By a critical comparison, he showed that the Salt Roasting-Water Leach approach will be best suited for the treatment of the Sikkim Complex Sulphide Concentrate. A pioneering contribution of Professor Shamsuddin had been the establishment of a sophisticated research laboratory for measurement of thermodynamic and electron transport properties of materials. A major goal has been the development and characterization of compound semiconductors for electronic devices as these have gained prominence in the recent past for applications in thermo-electric generators, lasers, infrared detectors etc. 7. Electron Transport Measurement Researches initiated on electron transport measurements have yielded fruitful results of practical consequence. ** Electrical Characterization of Schottky Barrier Diodes -The candidate and his group have characterized the various parameters encountered in Ni/n-Si diodes such as ideality factor, saturation current, barrier height, carrier concentration and interface state density. In addition, they also studied effect of hydrogenation, thermal annealing and X-ray irradiation on diode characteristics. ** Electrical Conductivity, Hall Coefficient, mobility and magnetic susceptibility of GaxIn (1-x)Sb alloys have been measured as function of composition and temperature. ** Professor Shamusuddin and his group have also measured the magnetic susceptibility behaviour of CdTexSe(1-x) and CdxHg(1-x)Te alloys. He succeeded in correlating the variation of susceptibility as well as thermodynamic activities with composition. ** High precision measurements on the conductivity of polycrystalline CdTe in the temperature range 300-7000 C and at the Te pressure varying from 10-5 to 10-17 atm. reveal that p to n type transition occurs at a temperature which depend on partial pressure of tellurium. A novel “defect model” has been proposed by him to account for the variation in the conducting properties of cadmium telluride. 8. Studies on Ferro-magnetic Shape Memory Ni-Mn-Ga Alloys ** In recent years ferro-magnetic shape memory alloys based on Ni-Mn-Ga system have gained prominence as technologically important materials. These alloys undergo martensitic
  • 4. transformation from cubic to tetragonal on cooling from high temperature. The effect of Mn/Ga ratio on crystal structure, phase transformation and magnetic properties were studied.
