time, obesity and chronic diseases have increased among
many Americans.

3. Taubes looks at new research on the MIND
(Mediterranean-Dash Intervention for Neurodegenerative
Delay) diet. Avoiding red, processed meat, the MIND diet
follows the standard, scientifically accepted pathway of
green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
Protein comes largely from poultry, fish, and nuts, and fat
from olive oil. This diet, high in fiber and low in sugar,
has been touted for years as causally related to a 50-
percent reduction in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

4. A study by researchers at Chicago’s Rush
University Medical School (New England
Journal of Medicine, July, 2023) spanned a
dozen years and concluded that the diet seems
to have no more effect on brain health than
simply eating less. Unfortunately, even with
data refuting one aspect of the MIND diet, the
mainstream health media has underreported
these findings. Taubes' point is that narratives
that go against dominant, publicly acceptable
thinking are often buried or forgotten.
