For this class, we will define “music of the past” as any aspect of music dating from Antiquity to 1750, and “today’s world” as the world during your lifetime. You are free to focus on what you personally relate to and see as most relevant to the present. Your goals will be: -to learn more about a specific area of music history through research -to write a coherent and convincing paper -to relate academic work to your personal experiences and/or interests -to think creatively about history a)-Research (50%) Choose one specific area of music from Antiquity to 1750 that you find most interesting and perceive to be relevant in today’s world. Then research that specific area of early music to the point that you can discuss it accurately in 5 pages of your paper. Your first paper for the class will be a summary of an article related to language – specifically, the article will have to do with how language works. This is a pretty straightforward assignment. The paper should be 2-3 pages long, and in it you should you should concentrate on making the summary complete, concise, and objective. Make sure you are representing the article accurately and fairly, and try to focus on the most important information in the article. After writing the summary, you should also include your own response to the article: what did you find interesting? What did you agree with or disagree with? Interact with the text in some way; enter the conversation - bring your own perspective to it.

Choose three (3) works of artfrom three artists from the Baroque period through the Postmodern era. Your three (3) works of art should come from the time periods or art movements covered in the reading from Unit 4 and Unit 5. Your choices must comply with the following criteria:

The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!
Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic.
For the topic you choose:
Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.

From this you can see that there is a fun, creative writing aspect to this assignment. In most cases students should stick with the genre as listed. The main goal in doing musical ethnography is to come to an understanding of how an “insider” experiences their own music-culture and then to write up your findings in a way that communicates this perspective to your readers.
To gain an “insider” perspective, ethnographers must seek out first-hand experience with their subject, usually by conducting interviews with musical “insiders” and by spending time participating and observing the music-culture.
For this assignment, you will have the opportunity to choose a music-culture that interests you and research it in two ways: first-hand (via an interview and/or fieldwork) and also via secondary sources (traditional library research).

A good way to start is by brainstorming people that you know who are involved in music (musicians, teachers, producers, students, also active listeners and fans) or thinking of musical organizations (bands, clubs, radio stations, dance troupes, fan clubs) that you have some connection to.
Consider your own family or group of friends, and don’t be shy about asking around.
You might assume that no one in your family is musical, but a few questions can turn up some very interesting information that may lead you to your topic.
Once you choose your

(the music-culture you want to explore, broadly speaking), you need to narrow down the

A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. It can explore the development of a single artist’s work (e.g. “The Prints of Albrecht Dürer”), reveal a range of artistic activity from a given time and place (e.g. “High Renaissance Artists in Rome under Pope Julius II”), or chart the depiction of a certain subject throughout history (e.g. “Images of War in the 20th Century”). Five Simple Steps
I. Select the two works of art from European culture during the time period covered by this course from two different categories:
· Visual art, including sculpture, mosaics, painting, architecture, and other forms
· Literature, including poetry, a play, fiction, and other forms
· Music in what we think of as the Classical tradition (not popular or folk songs), including forms such as the suite, oratorio, mass, motet, opera, formal dance or ballet music, chorale, and so forth. Some of these works are lengthy, so you may listen to and write about a section or movement of a longer work if you choose. For example, rather than write about Handel’s entire three-hour oratorio, The Messiah, you could write about one section such as the aria, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.”
Example: In your paper, you may want to write about a sculpture (i.e., visual art) by the Classical Greek sculptor Praxiteles and a magnifcat, a choral religious work (i.e., music), by the Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina. South Korean pop artist Psy’s smash hit single “Gangnam Style” is more than just a song. It is a cultural phenomenon. The video has gone viral on YouTube, garnering over 600 MILLION hits in just three months, becoming the third-most viewed video on the website (YouTube.com). “Gangnam Style” has been remade and parodied by hundreds of people all around the world. Psy’s popularity has crossed over from South Korea to many countries including the United States. He has granted interviews to the Today Show and the Ellen DeGeneres Show, danced “Gangnam Style” with Britney Spears, and become one of the most popular Halloween costumes of 2012. And through this buzz in the United States, one thing remains the same: the song is sung in Korean (not English).
“Gangnam Style” is one of the many K-Pop (Korean Pop) songs in what Chinese journalists called the Korean wave (韓流), “a phenomenon that refers to the onslaught of South Korean entertainment in Asia and, more recently, in other parts of the world” (Valerio). Despite differences in language, Psy’s song is now a mainstay in popular (pop) culture in the United States and beyond. However, Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is definitely not the first K-Pop song to exist: groups like 2NE1 and BIGBANG are certainly popular in Korea, but they did not make as big of a splash as Psy’s hit. What was it that made “Gangnam Style” so popular? Why Psy? Why now? Is it Psy’s appearance? The dance associated with the song? The music itself? The lyrics? The splashy, fun music video? Or is it the catchy concept, “Dress classy and dance cheesy”? And what might be the influence of this song on K-Pop music in the US in the future?
The purpose of this project is to explore the nature of popularity by examining a transnational flow of pop culture--a situation that requires the negotiation of different values, assumptions and tastes. What makes a popular artifact from one culture “cross over” to other cultures? What makes the artifact popular in the first place? Why are people drawn to artifacts from certain countries? Why do people seek alternatives from other cultures? What ideological, social, cultural, political, economic, and/or historical factors affect the popularity of an artifact in different countries? What makes one artifact internationally appealing while other artifacts from the same country do not gain the same kind of popularity? How does the success of one artifact open the door for other artifacts from the same country?

Description
Throughout the semester, we will discuss a variety of themes surrounding the archaeology of
people’s lives prior to the emergence of sedentary villages and urban centers. While we will
discuss evidence from particular places, it is also useful to survey what is known about the variety
of lifestyles and cultures around the world. Clearly, environmental conditions constrained what
early foragers could do in a particular place to feed and clothe themselves. Yet, evidence also
indicates that foragers developed sophisticated patterns of belief and daily practice, which
suggest they were rarely living “hand to mouth.”
In this assignment, you will summarize the archaeological evidence of past foraging groups in a
particular period and geographic area. In the table below, I provide a series of areas and
approximate time periods that distinguish the archaeology in particular regions. (NOTE! the precise
dates for your area may vary from those below, which are intended only as a general guide.)
Changes in material culture will not necessarily have a single date in your region, as developments
across large geographic areas were not even. And then, of course, in many areas the earliest
evidence for human activities may not be represented by our species, but our ancestors or
phylogenetic cousins.
For the purposes of this assignment, our collective starting point will be the appearance of our
own species, Homo sapiens, on the landscape in each particular area. If you have questions about
any aspect of the assignment, I am available to consult and guide you. Come talk to me either
during office hours or a time we arrange in advance.
We will have two poster sessions week «8» (15/17 Oct) during one of which you will present
your poster to the class. Be prepared to discuss what you found, and answer questions about the
archaeology in your area. You will receive feedback from your classmates—in addition to your
grade—that you can use as you prepare your final project presentation.
Getting started
The first thing to do is choose a region and time period. Consult the table below and identify
your top three preferences. We will choose areas in class. Areas will be available on a first-come
basis, so make sure you’ve identified alternatives in the event your primary choice is taken.
To familiarize yourself with your region and identify good keywords for further research, I
recommend you consult The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Hunters and Gatherers (Lee & Daly 1999)
available electronically through the Library website . I suggest reading the ‘Introduction’ and 1
‘Archaeology’ sections for your particular region. Take note of themes or issues that will help guide

illustrations or online images. The evaluation of your paper will be based both on the content and substance of

A museum exhibition consists of a carefully selected group of art objects that illuminates a specific artistic, cultural, or historical theme. Five Simple Steps
I. Select the two works of art from European culture during the time period covered by this course from two different categories:
· Visual art, including sculpture, mosaics, painting, architecture, and other forms
· Literature, including poetry, a play, fiction, and other forms
· Music in what we think of as the Classical tradition (not popular or folk songs), including forms such as the suite, oratorio, mass, motet, opera, formal dance or ballet music, chorale, and so forth. Some of these works are lengthy, so you may listen to and write about a section or movement of a longer work if you choose. For example, rather than write about Handel’s entire three-hour oratorio, The Messiah, you could write about one section such as the aria, “I know that my Redeemer liveth.”
Example: In your paper, you may want to write about a sculpture (i.e., visual art) by the Classical Greek sculptor Praxiteles and a magnifcat, a choral religious work (i.e., music), by the Italian Renaissance composer Palestrina. South Korean pop artist Psy’s smash hit single “Gangnam Style” is more than just a song. It is a cultural phenomenon. The video has gone viral on YouTube, garnering over 600 MILLION hits in just three months, becoming the third-most viewed video on the website (YouTube.com). “Gangnam Style” has been remade and parodied by hundreds of people all around the world. Psy’s popularity has crossed over from South Korea to many countries including the United States. He has granted interviews to the Today Show and the Ellen DeGeneres Show, danced “Gangnam Style” with Britney Spears, and become one of the most popular Halloween costumes of 2012. And through this buzz in the United States, one thing remains the same: the song is sung in Korean (not English).
“Gangnam Style” is one of the many K-Pop (Korean Pop) songs in what Chinese journalists called the Korean wave (韓流), “a phenomenon that refers to the onslaught of South Korean entertainment in Asia and, more recently, in other parts of the world” (Valerio). Despite differences in language, Psy’s song is now a mainstay in popular (pop) culture in the United States and beyond. However, Psy’s “Gangnam Style” is definitely not the first K-Pop song to exist: groups like 2NE1 and BIGBANG are certainly popular in Korea, but they did not make as big of a splash as Psy’s hit. What was it that made “Gangnam Style” so popular? Why Psy? Why now? Is it Psy’s appearance? The dance associated with the song? The music itself? The lyrics? The splashy, fun music video? Or is it the catchy concept, “Dress classy and dance cheesy”? And what might be the influence of this song on K-Pop music in the US in the future?
The purpose of this project is to explore the nature of popularity by examining a transnational flow of pop culture--a situation that requires the negotiation of different values, assumptions and tastes. What makes a popular artifact from one culture “cross over” to other cultures? What makes the artifact popular in the first place? Why are people drawn to artifacts from certain countries? Why do people seek alternatives from other cultures? What ideological, social, cultural, political, economic, and/or historical factors affect the popularity of an artifact in different countries? What makes one artifact internationally appealing while other artifacts from the same country do not gain the same kind of popularity? Description
Throughout the semester, we will discuss a variety of themes surrounding the archaeology of
people’s lives prior to the emergence of sedentary villages and urban centers. While we will
discuss evidence from particular places, it is also useful to survey what is known about the variety
of lifestyles and cultures around the world. Clearly, environmental conditions constrained what
early foragers could do in a particular place to feed and clothe themselves. Yet, evidence also
indicates that foragers developed sophisticated patterns of belief and daily practice, which
suggest they were rarely living “hand to mouth.”
In this assignment, you will summarize the archaeological evidence of past foraging groups in a
particular period and geographic area. In the table below, I provide a series of areas and
approximate time periods that distinguish the archaeology in particular regions. (NOTE! the precise
dates for your area may vary from those below, which are intended only as a general guide.)
Changes in material culture will not necessarily have a single date in your region, as developments
across large geographic areas were not even. And then, of course, in many areas the earliest
evidence for human activities may not be represented by our species, but our ancestors or
phylogenetic cousins.
For the purposes of this assignment, our collective starting point will be the appearance of our
own species, Homo sapiens, on the landscape in each particular area. If you have questions about
any aspect of the assignment, I am available to consult and guide you. Come talk to me either
during office hours or a time we arrange in advance.
We will have two poster sessions week «8» (15/17 Oct) during one of which you will present
your poster to the class. Be prepared to discuss what you found, and answer questions about the
archaeology in your area. You will receive feedback from your classmates—in addition to your
grade—that you can use as you prepare your final project presentation.

In the book The Double Helix, James Watson describes his role is this competitive scientific race. As I copy this text conversation between two adolescents into Microsoft Word, the screen lights up with red. Every line in this exchange is marked. Microsoft Word, it seems, does not “get” the language of these speakers and attacks the black-and-white text with its red pen. For Microsoft Word, these writers are wrong.
When I first encountered “computer-mediated language” (Crystal
2001
: 238), I was as confused as my word-processing program is today. An English teacher and one of our school's “grammar gurus,” I couldn't understand why students were substituting “2” for “too” or “u” for “you” in their school writing. I was completely stumped by the language they were using to talk to each other digitally. Today, when I look at the exchange between Lily and Michael, I am amazed by their ability to manipulate language and to communicate effectively across time and space. I have evolved from being a grammar guru who questioned this teen language as a degradation of Standard English to one who sees adolescent digitalk as a complex and fascinating combination of written and conversational languages in a digital setting.
The Journey of a “Grammar Guru”
I first ventured beyond e-mail into other forms of digital communication a decade ago when my brother installed an instant-messaging program on my personal computer. He taught me how to “see” him online and to exchange messages. A few years later, I used a similar instant-messaging program to “chat” with group members as we completed a class project for graduate school. Our inability to find a time for five adults to meet in person led us to use this technology, and our success in working together in a virtual space made me consider the pedagogical applications of instant messaging in my high school classroom.
When I first assigned a book discussion to be conducted by instant message (IM), my high school students looked at me quizzically. They hadn't thought about using IM as a learning tool. For them, it was a social space outside of scho.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Research & Reflect Project: Bringing Music of the Past into the Present Project Description For your written project this semester, you will be asked to research and reflect on the following question: How is music of the past relevant in today’s world? For this class, we will define “music of the past” as any aspect of music dating from Antiquity to 1750, and “today’s world” as the world during your lifetime. You are free to focus on what you personally relate to and see as most relevant to the present. Your goals will be: -to learn more about a specific area of music history through research -to write a coherent and convincing paper -to relate academic work to your personal experiences and/or interests -to think creatively about history a)-Research (50%) Choose one specific area of music from Antiquity to 1750 that you find most interesting and perceive to be relevant in today’s world. Then research that specific area of early music to the point that you can discuss it accurately in 5 pages of your paper. DO NOT research repertory in NAWM –this is your opportunity to explore beyond what is covered in class!

Suggested Topic Categories: Note that for each category, you will need to narrow your focus to one or two specific examples from before 1750 . --music sponsorship and/or entrepreneurship --music and technology --musical notation or transmission --music and politics or propaganda --music and religious reform --music and ritual or piety --music and emotions --music and other art forms --performance practices or conventions --a musical event or venue --a musical ensemble or organization --a compositional technique or expressive device --a pedagogical method --a theoretical principle --a musical philosophy or idea The possibilities are limitless! Don’t hesitate to meet with me if you need help focusing your interests or simply brainstorming. b)-Personal Reflection (50%)
- 3. Reflect on how the pre-1750 area of music you have researched is relevant in today’s world. This portion of your paper should consist of your personal ideas and observations, not research. You are free to interpret “today’s world” from any perspective, such as: a personal MHL 341 2 experience or interest, an aspect of your anticipated musical career, an aspect of the local community or your “home” environment, world events or issues (from your lifetime), a trend in present-day society, a music scene or venue you identify with, a particular use or style of music, etc. As you express your ideas in 5 pages of your paper, be sure to organize your thoughts logically and to connect them as clearly as possible to the material you have researched. Try to focus on one or two main ideas, which you can develop into a coherent statement that includes specific examples . A few strategies you might consider: --Discuss a parallel phenomenon (e.g.: compare a medieval ruler’s use of music for political purposes to the use of music in a recent political campaign) --Examine an earlier concept that has persisted to the present

(e.g.: an expressive device used by a Renaissance composer and your favorite pop singer) --Think about how people experience early music today (e.g.: present-day performances of an earlier work—who’s performing, who’s listening, performance venues, accessibility and transmission, etc.) These are just a few suggestions. Be creative! 2-Research & Reflect Paper: 10 numbered pages in 12-point font Times or Times New Roman and double-spaced + Bibliography with a minimum of 5 sources (due by Tuesday, Nov 7, noon), letter grade Submit a 10-page paper discussing your research findings on music before 1750 (50%) and expressing your personal thoughts on how the topic you researched relates to today’s world (50%). You are free to organize your paper as you wish, so long as you conform to the following criteria: -- Research your topic thoroughly by consulting reputable, specialized books and articles from scholarly journals in addition to dictionaries, encyclopedias, source readings, and scores. Your research must draw from at least 5 sources directly relevant to the pre-1750 example(s) you have chosen . Avoid sources published before 1960 as well as book reviews. --Provide a brief introductory paragraph in which you state the purpose of your paper (your thesis statement) --End with a brief conclusion summarizing your most important points
- 5. --Organize your material logically, inserting subheadings where appropriate --Make sure to distinguish clearly between your personal opinion (by using first-person “I”, for example) and information you have acquired from an external source (by citing frequently in footnote format all the sources you have consulted for any ideas that are not your own ). Failure to cite your sources accurately constitutes plagiarism . --Format your footnotes and bibliography according to Kate L. Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations , 8th ed. (Chicago and London: Chicago University Press, 2013) available in the Music Library: LB2369 .T8 2013 (on reserve ) . Be sure to also consult the Citations Guides posted on Blackboard . These include specific examples (such as online sources and scores) that will help you format your footnotes and bibliography quickly and correctly. --Format your document according to standard conventions (1- inch margins, double spacing, 12- point font Times or Times New Roman, numbered pages) --Submit 2 copies of your paper: a hard copy (submitted in class, or to me personally), and an electronic copy (submitted to Safe Assignment on Blackboard). I will post instructions for Safe Assignment submissions on the Announcements page on Blackboard before your paper is due. Grading Criteria
