This is the start of your paper. The first paragraph should briefly introduce the problem or issues, without too much detail. Briefly state what you intend to show in this paper. All should be double-spaced, as shown in this format sample. Margins are 1” on all sides. Add a page header as shown. Use fonts and font sizes exactly as shown in this document.
Paragraph two should outline the structure of your paper, in a fashion similar to this. This paper is organized as follows. Section 1 presents a detailed description of the problem or issue, Section 2 describes..., and Section N presents conclusions. This part of the paper should be only one or two paragraphs long. Writing Assignment 2. The papers will be submitted through the “Assignments” area of

The purpose of this assignment is to choose three important people or events in American
history through the readings of weeks 1-4 (writing assignment 1) or weeks 5-8 (writing
assignment 2.) You have some flexibility with this assignment. For example, you can
write about three important acts that the British imposed which caused the colonists to
seek independence against the mother country. Or, you could write about three important
events during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Contact your instructor if you need
guidance regarding a topic.
The assignment asks you to find a minimum of two academically credible sources (one
may be your textbook), develop a clear, focused thesis statement, and to support your
thesis with clear, insightful, consistent writing. This assignment will enhance your
research and writing skills, both of which are applicable not only to this course but to
many different careers.
You may include your own opinions and ideas as long as they reflect a solid
understanding of the reading material. For example, if you write about the presidency of
Thomas Jefferson, feel free to include your opinion as to how his ideas made the country
stronger, freer, or more prosperous, but your primary focus should be an analysis of the
factual information that you have utilized to support your thesis and main ideas.
Your ideas must be supported by information from your sources since you are using these
sources to prove your thesis. After all, the purpose of a research paper is to make a case
and to convince the reader that your writing and research supports your thesis. Whether
you quote information directly from your sources, or paraphrase, you must cite your
sources generously to give credit to the sources and to avoid plagiarism.
You may utilize one of two citation methods in your essay (depending on which method
you are most familiar): MLA or Chicago/Turabian. Your instructor will post links to web
sites that contain more specific information about utilizing these methods.
Your paper must contain a cover page, an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs
(one paragraph for each of your three people/events) and a conclusion paragraph. The
paper length is about 3 pages, double-spaced. A separate document in the Resources
section of the classroom is a sample student essay. Please refer to this document to get a

Introduction
For the research project, which will span the last few modules, you will choose a problem in society that you feel needs a solution or improvement. Then, you will research the problem, including its causes and effects, and propose a practical solution (or two) to the issue. You will argue your problem in a researched, academic essay.
This assignment has four major parts:
Part 1: A memorandum where you will acknowledge your purpose and goals in a formal writing format (100 points due in Module 6)
Part 2: Annotated Bibliography in which you list and detail your sources (100 points due in Module 6)
Part 3: A digitial presentation, where you will organize and detail your intended essay’s research via PowerPoint or similar program. (100 points due in Module 7)

Topic Selection
It’s important for you to choose a topic that you are passionate about so that you are more invested in its research. I will not choose a topic for you, but I do have some guidelines:
Off-Limit Topics: If the major backing for a topic roots itself in opinion, morality, or religious belief, then it is not an effective topic for an academic inquiry. For those reasons, please avoid the following topics: abortion, religious preference, death penalty, marijuana use, assisted suicide, and gay marriage.
Overly General Topics: Your essay will be about 5 pages long; you are not writing a book. Therefore, you need to choose a topic that is manageable. Topics that are too broad include gun control, child abuse, global warming, obesity, sex trafficking, violent media, teen pregnancy, bullying, or drug abuse. Nevertheless, these topics aren’t completely unavailable to you; if you’re interested in one of these ideas, you need to narrow it to a smaller central argument. (See below.)
Narrowed, Manageable Topics: Avoid choosing a broad, complex issue that cannot be easily solved. Since you only have a few weeks to work on this paper and to propose effective solutions, you should narrow your topic down into a feasible focus. For example, instead of “gun control,” you could narrow the focus to “A problem in society is that many guns are bought and sold without proper background checks and training.” With this topic, you can research more effectively. As you narrow your topic, make sure you can state it as a problem (e.g. “A problem in society is _________.). Moreover, you should begin to imagine a practical solution for the problem. For example, a solution for your problem would not be that “guns must be eliminated everywhere”; this is too broad and too problematic.
A Word of Caution: It’s important that you narrow your topic effectively, but be sure not to narrow too much. For this assignment, you should choose.

The paper will require a title page, NO abstract, three to five full pages of content with incorporation of a minimum of 3
external resources from credible sources and a Works Cited/References page. Wikipedia and similar general information
sites, blogs or discussion groups are not considered creditable sources for a research project. No more than 10% of the
paper may be in the form of a direct citation from an external source. Choose your topic from the list of topics that follow
these organization steps.
Paper organization
Open Word and save a blank document with the following name:

The paper should be organized in the following way:
1. Title page:
a. Center in the middle of the page (horizontally and vertically) the title (subject) of the paper and below that
your name
2. Body of the paper:
a. Use 12-point Arial font
b. Set the margins at 1”
c. Length – 3-5 full pages, not counting the title page or the References page.
d. Include a minimum of 3 APA-formatted citations and related References page. Every reference must be cited
at least once, and every citation have an entry in the References list. If you are not familiar with APA format,
it is recommended that you use the References feature in Word for your citations and Reference List or refer
to the "Citing and Writing" option under the Resources/Library/Get Help area in the LEO classroom. It is
important to review the final format for APA-style correctness even if generated by Word.
e. Include at least two (2) informational footnotes. Footnotes are not used to list a reference! Footnotes contain
information about the topic to which the footnote has been attached.
f. Place the references on a separate page following the body of the paper. Note: Use a hard return (CTRL
Enter) after the end of your paper body and the start of the References page.

Teaching international students has taught me as much as I hope it has educated my students. One of the first things I have noticed is how much more knowledgeable I have become about the world in theory and practice. To help, I took courses in teaching methods specifically for non-English students. These courses were designed to show both cultural and linguistic differences in many languages. My courses included ESL from Ministry of Education in Ontario and TESL at St. Mary’s and all were really interesting; but of course the most effective has been the positive attitudes and hard work of the students, themselves. My hope is that this is all making me a much more skillful instructor, too. Understanding the questions my students may have in advance is important to effective teaching. Now I can often anticipate the types of material that will need explaining to my students, so I can try to find out what they will need to know ahead of time. Next week, for example will be Thanksgiving, a holiday which is specific to North America. To explain what it was, though, I needed to check the dates for the American Thanksgiving, which isn’t until November 27. . I believe that the coursework and all of the experience have made me much more thoughtful as a person, too. The actual teaching experience and interaction with so many different students has helped me to understand more about the world as well as myself. Now I understand that different students will respond to information according to their cultural worldviews, and I can see how I am the same. During recent exercises, I had to explain the games of baseball and hockey, as they are not played in most of the countries from which my students come, but we’ve had some great mutual discussion about soccer, which we all know. So, having to draw upon so many different types of understanding has made teaching international students the most satisfying activity I can think of, and one I hope to be doing for a long time.

This document provides more information about the portfolio project and guidelines to complete each
content area to the best of your ability. Use the information here and contained in the syllabus to answer
initial questions you may have. And don’t forget to include citations for every piece of text you reference
or use to help you formulate your own work. You can either include a short works cited/bibliography at the
end of each content area, or one large works cited/bibliography encompassing all content areas. Any style
is fine so long as it is consistent.
Meeting
You need to schedule a 30-minute meeting with me during the term. You should bring two content areas of
your choosing with you for review. These need to be full first drafts, not merely ideas or notes. I will read
as much as time permits to provide you feedback on how to improve these pieces of writing and approach
the remaining content areas. I will also give you a sense of where you stand with your APC grade.
Fallacies
For the fallacies content area, you should find examples of fallacies committed in texts or videos.* If all
else fails, create a dialogue between different persons that represents fallacious arguments you have heard
in the past or in which you were personally involved. After providing the fallacy, you should identify the
fallacy and then explain how this text, video, or dialogue commits this fallacy.
Students usually complete this section in one of three ways. One option is to provide a number of
examples with brief explanations (roughly 5-8 fallacies). The second option discusses fewer fallacies in
more depth (roughly 2-3 fallacies). Finally, other students take up some issue of the day and locate a
number of fallacies in arguments surrounding that issue. This third option usually involves discussing
fewer fallacies in depth as well, thereby overlapping with the second option.
Morals and Markets
While some people attempt to respond to the overall claims of Sandel’s book – and this is all well and good
– I encourage everyone to focus on at least two concrete cases or scenarios he raises. This will allow you
to provide a more in-depth response or investigate a case even further. Some people also use this as an
opportunity to perform light research in order to substantiate or criticize various points in the book. Feel
free to bring in other cases that display a dilemma of norms in a market-driven culture.
* You should not simply repeat fallacies from our textbook, another logic textbook, or some website
dedicated to explaining fallacies. There would be no point to such an exercise. The purpose is to display
that you can apply the concept of a fallacy to real-world cases, not ones already identified by others.

This is the start of your paper. The first paragraph should briefly introduce the problem or issues, without too much detail. Briefly state what you intend to show in this paper. All should be double-spaced, as shown in this format sample. Margins are 1” on all sides. Add a page header as shown. Use fonts and font sizes exactly as shown in this document.
Paragraph two should outline the structure of your paper, in a fashion similar to this. This paper is organized as follows. Section 1 presents a detailed description of the problem or issue, Section 2 describes..., and Section N presents conclusions. This part of the paper should be only one or two paragraphs long. The purpose of this assignment is to choose three important people or events in American
history through the readings of weeks 1-4 (writing assignment 1) or weeks 5-8 (writing
assignment 2.) You have some flexibility with this assignment. For example, you can
write about three important acts that the British imposed which caused the colonists to
seek independence against the mother country. Or, you could write about three important
events during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Contact your instructor if you need
guidance regarding a topic.
The assignment asks you to find a minimum of two academically credible sources (one
may be your textbook), develop a clear, focused thesis statement, and to support your
thesis with clear, insightful, consistent writing. This assignment will enhance your
research and writing skills, both of which are applicable not only to this course but to
many different careers.
You may include your own opinions and ideas as long as they reflect a solid
understanding of the reading material. For example, if you write about the presidency of
Thomas Jefferson, feel free to include your opinion as to how his ideas made the country
stronger, freer, or more prosperous, but your primary focus should be an analysis of the
factual information that you have utilized to support your thesis and main ideas.
Your ideas must be supported by information from your sources since you are using these
sources to prove your thesis. After all, the purpose of a research paper is to make a case
and to convince the reader that your writing and research supports your thesis. Whether
you quote information directly from your sources, or paraphrase, you must cite your
sources generously to give credit to the sources and to avoid plagiarism.
You may utilize one of two citation methods in your essay (depending on which method
you are most familiar): MLA or Chicago/Turabian. Your instructor will post links to web
sites that contain more specific information about utilizing these methods.

Introduction
For the research project, which will span the last few modules, you will choose a problem in society that you feel needs a solution or improvement. Then, you will research the problem, including its causes and effects, and propose a practical solution (or two) to the issue. You will argue your problem in a researched, academic essay.
This assignment has four major parts:
Part 1: A memorandum where you will acknowledge your purpose and goals in a formal writing format (100 points due in Module 6)
Part 2: Annotated Bibliography in which you list and detail your sources (100 points due in Module 6)

Topic Selection
It’s important for you to choose a topic that you are passionate about so that you are more invested in its research. I will not choose a topic for you, but I do have some guidelines:
Off-Limit Topics: If the major backing for a topic roots itself in opinion, morality, or religious belief, then it is not an effective topic for an academic inquiry. For those reasons, please avoid the following topics: abortion, religious preference, death penalty, marijuana use, assisted suicide, and gay marriage.
Overly General Topics: Your essay will be about 5 pages long; you are not writing a book. Therefore, you need to choose a topic that is manageable. Topics that are too broad include gun control, child abuse, global warming, obesity, sex trafficking, violent media, teen pregnancy, bullying, or drug abuse. Nevertheless, these topics aren’t completely unavailable to you; if you’re interested in one of these ideas, you need to narrow it to a smaller central argument. (See below.)
Narrowed, Manageable Topics: Avoid choosing a broad, complex issue that cannot be easily solved. Since you only have a few weeks to work on this paper and to propose effective solutions, you should narrow your topic down into a feasible focus. Teaching international students has taught me as much as I hope it has educated my students. One of the first things I have noticed is how much more knowledgeable I have become about the world in theory and practice. To help, I took courses in teaching methods specifically for non-English students. These courses were designed to show both cultural and linguistic differences in many languages. My courses included ESL from Ministry of Education in Ontario and TESL at St. Mary’s and all were really interesting; but of course the most effective has been the positive attitudes and hard work of the students, themselves. My hope is that this is all making me a much more skillful instructor, too. Understanding the questions my students may have in advance is important to effective teaching. Now I can often anticipate the types of material that will need explaining to my students, so I can try to find out what they will need to know ahead of time. Next week, for example will be Thanksgiving, a holiday which is specific to North America. To explain what it was, though, I needed to check the dates for the American Thanksgiving, which isn’t until November 27. . I believe that the coursework and all of the experience have made me much more thoughtful as a person, too. The actual teaching experience and interaction with so many different students has helped me to understand more about the world as well as myself. Now I understand that different students will respond to information according to their cultural worldviews, and I can see how I am the same. During recent exercises, I had to explain the games of baseball and hockey, as they are not played in most of the countries from which my students come, but we’ve had some great mutual discussion about soccer, which we all know. So, having to draw upon so many different types of understanding has made teaching international students the most satisfying activity I can think of, and one I hope to be doing for a long time.

This document provides more information about the portfolio project and guidelines to complete each
content area to the best of your ability. Use the information here and contained in the syllabus to answer
initial questions you may have. And don’t forget to include citations for every piece of text you reference
or use to help you formulate your own work. You can either include a short works cited/bibliography at the
end of each content area, or one large works cited/bibliography encompassing all content areas. Any style
is fine so long as it is consistent.
Meeting
You need to schedule a 30-minute meeting with me during the term. You should bring two content areas of
your choosing with you for review. These need to be full first drafts, not merely ideas or notes. I will read
as much as time permits to provide you feedback on how to improve these pieces of writing and approach
the remaining content areas. I will also give you a sense of where you stand with your APC grade.
Fallacies
For the fallacies content area, you should find examples of fallacies committed in texts or videos.* If all
else fails, create a dialogue between different persons that represents fallacious arguments you have heard
in the past or in which you were personally involved. After providing the fallacy, you should identify the
fallacy and then explain how this text, video, or dialogue commits this fallacy.
Students usually complete this section in one of three ways. One option is to provide a number of
examples with brief explanations (roughly 5-8 fallacies). The second option discusses fewer fallacies in
more depth (roughly 2-3 fallacies). Finally, other students take up some issue of the day and locate a
number of fallacies in arguments surrounding that issue. This third option usually involves discussing
fewer fallacies in depth as well, thereby overlapping with the second option.
Morals and Markets
While some people attempt to respond to the overall claims of Sandel’s book – and this is all well and good
– I encourage everyone to focus on at least two concrete cases or scenarios he raises. This will allow you
to provide a more in-depth response or investigate a case even further. Some people also use this as an
opportunity to perform light research in order to substantiate or criticize various points in the book. Feel
free to bring in other cases that display a dilemma of norms in a market-driven culture.
* You should not simply repeat fallacies from our textbook, another logic textbook, or some website
dedicated to explaining fallacies. There would be no point to such an exercise. The purpose is to display
that you can apply the concept of a fallacy to real-world cases, not ones already identified by others.

Temple of Asclepius in Thrace. Excavation results
The temple and the sanctuary around were dedicated to Asklepios Zmidrenus. This name has been known since 1875 when an inscription dedicated to him was discovered in Rome. The inscription is dated in 227 AD and was left by soldiers originating from the city of Philippopolis (modern Plovdiv).

Research Questions EXAMPLES: ● What are the major causes of the issue? ● How has the issue impacted the population? ● Who is most impacted by the issue? ● How has the issue impacted the country economically? ● How has the issue impacted the country politically? ● How has the issue impacted the country environmentally? ● What sort of health issues have arisen due to this issue? ● How are women and children impacted by this issue? ● What is currently being done to solve the problem? ● Who are the main players involved in the issue? (individuals, organizations, government institutions, specific populations) Watch the video for directions on how to create your own research questions! You may use these questions but make them specific to your country/issue! Example: What are the major causes of the food crisis in India?
- 6. Finding sources of information You’ll want information to answer your research questions. Consider your questions and topic as you look through the information. CLICK HERE <-(full topic list and 2 sources you may use) For the 3rd required source: Use the websites on the next slide to find an article matching your topic and answering one of your research questions. Just linking the website is NOT citing your source.

- 9. Last part - MLA formatted sources We always recommend that you use this citation generator. You need to find as much information based on what type of source you’re using. Here is a resource to help you find information on websites. Most, if not all, of your sources are found online but you’re not citing an ENTIRE website - only a single: news article, encyclopedia entry, journal article, etc FROM the website. WATCH THIS VIDEO FOR HELP on citing sources, in-text citations, and works cited.

- 12. First label your sources Then copy+paste your citation from Part 1. Make sure to follow your teacher’s feedback and correct any citation issues you may have had in Part 1! See example:
- 13. Find quotes and take notes Copy+paste a quote from your source. Add an in-text citation (see next slide for help). Answer the questions. These are your quote explanations which will end up in your paper. See example:
- 14. In-text citation help: Look at your works cited. Your in-text citation will be the first part of your source citation. Above are direct quotes with the proper in-text citation.
- 15. To build a thesis statement, you first need main points! Scroll up to part 1 and copy+paste your focus questions into the boxes. Your main points are based on the questions you researched. Make sure you have them in a logical order (general to more specific). Turn them into statements (not questions). You can do this because you have answers to your questions so you can now present your research. See example:
- 16. Thesis statement Now that you know what your 3 paragraphs will be about you can create your thesis statement (which summarizes, specifically, what your paper will contain). Each main point should be shortened down as much as you can to create a SINGLE sentence. Your country and original topic should be first mentioned followed by your 3 main points. (Ex. Egypt’s governmental oppression is seen in: ___, ___, ___. See example below: For more help click here!
- 18. Upon completion of Part 2 submit to dropbox U2L9
- 19. Part 3 - Bringing it all together in an outline ● In part 3, just copy and paste your information into the outline on your worksheet from Part 2. ● Copy your thesis statement and main points/topic sentences. Then add in quotes and their explanations. Your explanations are the analysis/notes you took on the quote (Why is this quote significant?). ● Follow the directions on the outline! ● Color code so you know which quotes go to which paragraph. ● You’ll want to work on an intro and conclusion (see next slide for help). ● Lastly, You’ll want to work on a completed works cited page.

Works cited help reminder Copy+paste your sources in alphabetical order Only title should be centered Make sure you have a hanging indent. ● How to hanging indent in Word PC/Mac ● How to hanging indent in Google docs ● How to hanging indent in Pages (Mac) Double spaced, 12pt, Times new roman (just like your paper).

- 23. Part 4 - Creating your paper For this part you are merely finalizing your paper. Please make sure to submit ALL parts of your project to this final dropbox! You can copy and paste from each box to part 4 (on your worksheet) and use indents to indicate paragraphs or you can copy+paste the entire outline and delete what you don’t need.
