The program I researched is the Veterans Incarcerated Program (VIP) at San Quentin State Prison located in Marin County, California. San Quentin is a large maximum-security prison that houses around 4,000 male inmates. VIP aims to address the needs of incarcerated veterans through counseling, support groups, and job training. Eligible participants must be former military with an honorable discharge. The program is overseen by a veteran services coordinator and peer mentors. VIP has been in operation since 2009 and participants engage in the program for the duration of their incarceration. Components include substance abuse education, mental health services, and vocational training. The program benefits inmates by providing rehabilitation services and a support

Program X is a program which promotes cognitive reconstruction, problem
solving skills and social skills for offenders. The objective in implementing this program
is to change the offenders thinking and in turn change the offender’s behavior in a
positive manner.
2) What, in your opinion, makes this program effective?
The program has multiple qualities which makes it effective. The first of which is
the fact that the program does not attempt to directly affect the offender’s behavior, but it
attempts to affect the offender’s cognitive thinking. This quality of the program seems to
be more effective because our behavior is a direct result of our cognitive thoughts,
problem solving skills and social skills. Therefore this program goes directly to the
source of human behavior, cognitive reconstruction.
Another way in which this program is effective is the fact that it focuses on
problem solving skills, which I believe, can have a significant impact on deviant
behavior. In my opinion, many crimes which occur on a daily basis in America could
very easily be prevented in individuals possessed better problem solving skills. Problem
solving skills are directly related to crime especially in cases of violent crime. Many
deviant acts could be prevented if individuals had better problem solving skills.
3) What, in your opinion, makes this program ineffective?
In my opinion one characteristic of this program which would be ineffective is
how the program is administered, in a classroom setting with offenders. This setting may
provide various distractions while the trainers are administering the program. For
instance, if one trainer was attempting to teach a group of fifteen offenders. Let’s say
only five of the fifteen offenders graduated high school and five had a GED or high
school diploma equivalent. The five offenders who do not have a high school education
will probably be very difficult to control and even more so keep their attention. This
could provide for an ineffective learning environment even for those who truly want to
learn. I understand the participants (offenders) will be pre-screened and selected, but it
would be very difficult to avoid the above situation described in every program session.
4) Name one thing you would change about the program.
One thing I would change about Program X would be the selection of offenders
who will attempt to complete the program. The pre-screening process would be very
strict on who can participate in the program. Only offenders who attributed a desire to
better their cognitive reconstruction, problem solving skills and social skills would be

The program that I will be discussing is human service programs. In the abiding endeavor to enhance human service programs, service providers, policy makers and funders are more and more recognizing the significance of thorough program evaluations. Needs assessments are a form of research conducted to gather information about the needs of a population or a group in a community (Tutty & Rothery, 2010, p. 149). One purpose of a needs assessment is to explore in more depth whether a new program within an organization or agency is needed (Dudley, 2014, p. 117). 2) Nine controlled trials and 14 cohort studies showed some evidence of medium and long-term outcomes like behavioral changes, increased awareness and help-seeking.

Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Rita
Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Because Rita’s assault occurred within the 5-day window for forensic evidence collection of this kind, Rita consented to activation of the county’s sexual assault response team (SART). Although she agreed to have an advocate and the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) meet her at the hospital, Rita tearfully stated that she did not want to file a police report at that time because she did not want to upset her family. The nurse examiner interviewed Rita, collected evidence, recorded any injuries, administered antibiotics for possible sexually transmitted infections, and gave Rita emergency contraception in case of pregnancy. The advocate stayed with Rita during the procedure, supporting her and validating her experience, and gave her a referral for individual crisis counseling at our agency.
My treatment goals for Rita included alleviation of rape trauma syndrome symptoms that included shame and self-blame, validation of self-worth and empowerment, and processing how it would feel to discl.

The program that I will be discussing is human service programs. In the abiding endeavor to enhance human service programs, service providers, policy makers and funders are more and more recognizing the significance of thorough program evaluations. They want to know what the programs achieve, what they spend, and how they must be operated to attain maximum cost efficiency. They want to recognize which programs function for which groups, and they need endings based on proof, as opposed to impassioned pleas and testimonials. The purposes should state the extensive, extensive range result that maintains the mission of the program, including content information areas, performance prospects, and values anticipated of program graduates. Purposes can be stated in wider and more stirring language than outcomes that have to be measurable and specific. Outcome is the reason nonprofit organizations struggle to build capacity and deliver programs. Measurement of outcomes is the systematic way of assessing the extent to which a program has attained its intended results.

Let’s begin by considering three important questions: 1. Is evaluation an important area of social work? 2. Is the evaluator role an important one for social workers? 3. Needs assessments are a form of research conducted to gather information about the needs of a population or a group in a community (Tutty & Rothery, 2010, p. 149). One purpose of a needs assessment is to explore in more depth whether a new program within an organization or agency is needed (Dudley, 2014, p. 117). Key questions of this type of needs assessment may revolve around: (1) whether there are enough prospective clients to warrant this type of program, (2) the different activities or programs that the respondents would be interested in using, priorities for some activities over others, (3) importance of the activities, and (4) times in which this program would be desired and used (Dudley, 2014, p. 117). Even within these settings, there are specific and differing programs that operate. In the outpatient setting, a helping professional might be called on to conduct sessions with anger management groups, domestic violence groups, substance abuse groups, and sex offenders after release.

The PEACH Study reviewed the effectiveness of prevention programmes for domestic abuse among children and young people. It found that:
1) Few programmes explicitly aimed to change behaviors, most aimed to raise awareness, knowledge and understanding instead.
2) Nine controlled trials and 14 cohort studies showed some evidence of medium and long-term outcomes like behavioral changes, increased awareness and help-seeking.
3) Programmes worked best for small, high-risk groups and increasingly targeted boys. They paid little attention to marginalized groups like LGBT youth.

Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Rita
Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Because Rita’s assault occurred within the 5-day window for forensic evidence collection of this kind, Rita consented to activation of the county’s sexual assault response team (SART). Although she agreed to have an advocate and the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) meet her at the hospital, Rita tearfully stated that she did not want to file a police report at that time because she did not want to upset her family. The nurse examiner interviewed Rita, collected evidence, recorded any injuries, administered antibiotics for possible sexually transmitted infections, and gave Rita emergency contraception in case of pregnancy. The advocate stayed with Rita during the procedure, supporting her and validating her experience, and gave her a referral for individual crisis counseling at our agency.
