This document describes requirements for a tool to support qualitative evaluation of software architecture using the Architecture Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM). The tool would help identify risks in architectural designs that could inhibit meeting quality goals like performance, reliability and security. It would do this by supporting the nine steps of ATAM, including documenting business needs, the proposed architecture, quality attribute scenarios, and tradeoffs identified. This would allow tracing architectural risks and weaknesses to specific components early in development for lower-cost fixes. Existing tools focus on requirements tracing or testing, but not on directly evaluating whether an architecture can meet business and quality needs. The proposed tool aims to fill this gap.
