How do I get there? What\'s next for my career? If you are wondering how to leverage your legal training into "what\'s next" ‐ whether that is continuing down the "traditional" legal path and seeking promotion within your firm or seeking advancement within in‐house, academic or government venues; shifting your practice focus or changing directions altogether, this interactive panel discussion will provide insights and strategic career advice on: positioning for career advancement; managing and advancing your current skill sets and acquiring new ones to address changing needs; creating opportunities through professional networks and associations; cultivating mentors and sponsors; acknowledging roadblocks and shifting career paths; utilizing your legal training in non‐traditional ways; and communicating careers shifts and changes to clients and colleagues.

The thing that I learned early on is you
really need to set goals in your life, both
short-term and long-term, just like you do
in business. Having that long-term goal
will enable you to have a plan on how to
achieve it. We apply these skills in business,
and yet when it comes to ourselves we
rarely apply them. And so the insight was
what do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to run a company. Then, what are the
kinds of things that you need to do to
prepare yourself to do that?

Strategic Network Mapping
Step 1
List 3 career or professional goals.
These goals should be specific (for example; transfer or
short-term overseas assignment; appointment to a firm
committee or expanding current role within a committee;
targeted assignment with a key partner).
Are your goals related to substantive practice area skills,
leadership development, management or client relationship
development?

Strategic Network Mapping
Step 2
Everyone has one, so who is in your
network?
Do you understand what a “network”
is?
What is “networking” (really)?

What A Network Is….
(1) An openwork fabric or structure in which cords, threads,
or wires cross at regular intervals. (2) An extended group of
people with similar interests or concerns who interact and
remain in informal contact for mutual assistance or support.
It starts with the people you already know (colleagues,
former colleagues, college classmates, clients, peers,
reports). To build your network, identify and nurture the
relationships you already have. Ensure your network is
sustainable: fuel the growth of your network by following-up,
sharing information and simply staying in touch.

Networking….
“the exchange of information…the cultivation of productive
relationships for employment or business.” (Merriam-
Webster)
“a supportive system of sharing information and services
among individuals and groups having a common interest”
(dictionary.com)
Email, closing dinners, an elevator ride, CLE trainings,
committee meetings, dropping the kids off at
daycare….networking is an activity that can and does
happen just about anywhere or anytime.
Networking is not a network.

Strategic Network Mapping
Step 3
Based on your 3 identified career goals, focus on your
current as well as planned networking activities. Is your
network a barrier or is it providing opportunity and access?
Are you aligning your networking activities with your
professional goals?
Are your networking activities exposing you to people who
can help you achieve your professional goals? Are you
expanding or enhancing your network?
This exercise is not only intended to get you to think about
where you are networking – but also why and how
(outcomes, time commitments and contacts you have or need
to get there).
To sum it up: Be deliberate in your networking choices.

Final Thoughts….
Networking, whether online or in person, is like sit-ups –
repetition and focus yields results. Consistent engagement
builds community and credibility.
You can’t work just one room. Build your reputation across
“platforms” and monitor results.
Networking effectively is a 3 step program: listen, share and
engage – then repeat.
