Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites that can only replicate within a host cell by using the host's metabolic machinery. Each type of virus has a limited host range and infects specific host cells by binding to receptor molecules on the cell through a lock-and-key mechanism which allows the virus to identify its host. Viruses lack the enzymes needed for replication and rely entirely on hijacking the host cell.
