 WHAT IS FERTILIZER?
Fertilizer is any substance that is applied to the
soil or to the plant to supply the elements
required for the nutrient and growth of
plants.
 Harmful effects of fertilizers in environment
 Expensive cost of fertilizers
 Availability of fertilizer
Classification of fertilizers
ORGANIC FERTILIZERS
INORGANIC FERTILIZERS
Any fertilizer product of
plant and/or animal origin
that has undergone
decomposition through
biological, chemical and or
any other process as long
as the original materials
are no longer
recognizable, soil like in
texture and free from plant
or animal pathogen.
Any fertilizer product
whose properties are
determined primarily by
its content of mineral
matter or synthetic
chemical compounds.
 They are expensive
 Excessive use of fertilizers damages the
plants and reduces soil fertility.
 The ingredients in the fertilizers are toxic to
the skin and respiratory system.
 Applying excessive amounts of fertilizers
leads to the release of harmful greenhouse
gases into the atmosphere and the
eutrophication of waterways.
 Proper use of fertilizer
 Matching supply with crop demand
 Use of slow release fertilizers and inhibitors.
 Increase farm income
 Provide and ensure that the plant had a
balance and suitable access of nutrients.
 Improves the quality of the soil
 Excessive use of fertilizer leads to water, soil
and air pollution.
 Over use of fertilizer can contribute to soil
acidification and soil crust.
 Proper rates/doses
 Right timing of application
 Proper method of application
 Right kind of fertilizers
Methods of fertilizer
application
 Foliar – spraying
through plants
leaves
 Side dress – apply
fertilizers beside the
plant base.
 Basal – apply organic
or inorganic fertilizer
before planting or
during the final
levelling.
 Ring method – apply
fertilizer around the
base of the plant or
trees.
 Top dress/ broadcast –
apply fertilizer on top
of crop by
broadcasting.
 Drenching – apply
fertilizer in the soil
directly with or without
plant
 Fertigation – applied
along with irrigation
process.
 Hole – fertilizer is dropped in holes around
the trees.
 Spot – fertilizer is dropped in small amount
on the side of each hill or plant.
 Band – fertilizer is spread on a narrow strip
along the side of the row of plants.
 Increase the growth rate, yield and quantity
or nutritive value of plant.
FERTILIZER COMPUTATION
 Fertilizers provide crops with essential
nutrient like nitrogen so that the crops grow
bigger , faster and produce more food.
However, applying too much fertilizer can be
a problem because it leads to the release of
greenhouse gases and eutrophication.
 Today, use of fertilizers is seen as a
necessary agricultural technology. Because
soil restores nutrients. However, firstly soil
analysis should be performed carefully. After
then, fertilizer should be given to soil. The
structure and chemical content of the soil
should be identified and the most appropriate
type of fertilizers should be selected. The
most suitable method should be processed.
Otherwise, the fertilizer should be noted that
errors will result in the loss of both energy
and finance. Fertilizing should be done in
time and should not be inappropriate times.
