INTRODUCTION
The final project for Introduction to the Construction Industry marks the end of the module
and the subject. Starting off with the brief, the FNBE students were also given a short
explanation on the nature of the assignment.
In a group of 2 students, we need to find a specific land within campus area to initiate a small
construction project of 30 times 30 metres that serves either one of the following purposes:
 Recreation area
 Study Enhancement Area
 Rest area
 Food and beverage (dining area)
 Commercial area (exclude food and beverage)
Following on that, we need to study and prepare the following types of building development,
fulfilling requirements such as suggestion, rationale, benefits, site analysis, evaluation and the
needs of the project to the client and to the community. This assignment will be graded based
on a 20 page A4 report.
Rozanna and I paired up as partners for this assignment. The themes were given randomly
and our group received Food and Beverage as our construction theme.
To start off, we had small brainstorming sessions and discussions besides trips to potential
sites within campus. However, we both agreed on the best location for our construction
project. Then, we delegated research topics individually and come together for weekly
progress as a group. We achieved our aims as the deadline of the project drew closer but still
provide room to develop ideas along the way.
SITE ANALYSIS
The Lake in Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus is an identity and core feature of the
campus, and is known for it. A concrete promenade or walking path complete with canopy
umbrellas and seating make for rest area, simply functioning for students and staff to get from
one block to another, or to simply lounge by the lake to enjoy the scenery and bask in the
natural feels of the natural environment. As the topic of our construction project is on food
and beverage, we plan to carry out the actual project along the promenade as zoned in green
above. We decided to base our project on this specific site because it has great potential to
develop into an attractive food hub as it has the space for these activities, besides being next
to the lake which is one of the main attractions for social activities in the campus.

CONCEPT
Given that our topic is Food and Beverage, we explored a variety of possible ideas and
concepts that could be incorporated into this construction project. Thanks to internet research,
we found an array of very viable and justifiable options to select from. The combination of
the following concepts form a complete and possible project
 Food Kiosks
Food kiosks are a smaller-scale,
faster and more efficient
version of built-in shops or
restaurants. Usually seen in
malls, at events and public spaces,
these miniature stalls produce
snacks and small bites for public.
 Container spaces
Containers are a new trend for small enterprises and businesses. Stylish and edgy, the
metal outlook and geometric shape of a container ‘box’ create a small space and room for
activities. Besides radiating the message of using recyclable materials, the physical
structure is also space and money saving.
 Farmer’s Market concept
L to R: Baum Kuchen pop-up village in Tokyo > Korean
food kiosk Koki and Vegi at the Brooklyn Bridge
L to R: Chic restaurant > Shipping container turned café
design > Recycled information central
The concept of farmer markets is a physical retail market featuring foods sold directly by
farmers to consumers. Farmers' markets exist worldwide and reflect their local culture
and economy. The core idea of this type of market is that organic food supplies, brought
straight from the farm, is being traded directly with consumers.
In this era, more unnatural food and beverage is being overproduced, causing dire health
consequences on the people. This can be seen on campus itself, where insufficient fresh
fruit and vegetable as a daily consumption is minimum and instead replaced with
manufactured food supplies and quick snacks.
Demolishing that idea, we propose to introduce the idea of quickly-prepared bites and
beverages made only from organically-grown food.

graphic art > Healthy People for Healthy Food
 Promenade
Taking inspiration from the Promenade Samuel-De Champlain in Quebec, a contemporary,
polished look is a major feature of this construction project. Beige coloured wood and
straight angles give a clean look whereas minimalistic and native softscape complements it
perfectly.
MAIN IDEA
The concepts extracted from the existing projects above form a whole new idea for our food
and beverage themed construction project.
Our main project: A built extension as a means for more space to create more lounging and
activity areas. A row of food kiosks built on the existing concrete promenade, creating a zone
for food and beverage trade. Lastly, to improve on the existing softscape and hardscape and
further enhance the attractiveness and effectiveness of the lakeside promenade as a ‘chilling
out’ zone by constructing more people-friendly facilities.
Below is a list of our details on the construction project as a whole
1) Pomegranate, Our Promenade.
One of the oldest known fruits, found in writings and
artefacts of many cultures and religions, the
pomegranate (punica granatum) is an original native of
Persia. This nutrient dense, antioxidant rich fruit has
been revered as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal
life. Pomegranate is proven to inhibit breast cancer,
prostate cancer, colon cancer, leukaemia and to prevent vascular changes that promote
tumour growth, besides improving symptoms of depression and increasing bone mass
in lab animals.
Combining the words promenade and pomegranate, the word Pomegranate is created.
Selecting this name for our construction project is due to many reasons, mainly, its
major health benefit which is to retain youth and health. This is what Pomegranate is
meant to reflect on: the vitality and life of the campus society, by further promoting

using wood.
organic and fresh food. Besides that, the bright fuchsia colour of the fruit also depicts
the youthful personality of the campus and its inhabitants, being the inspiration of the
colour scheme of the container food kiosk and its design.
2) Wooden deck extension
In our proposal, we plan to build an extension from the concrete walkway towards the
lake. This extra space allows more room for walking circulation and also for visitors
to lounge along the lake while eating the food bought from the stalls and interacting
among one another.
3) Food kiosks
Five small food kiosks selling organically-grown and made food. These food kiosks
have a united outlook to radiate a united identity that is they are literally housed in
recycled, steel shipping containers. Besides that, these containers have the same size,
shape, colour and design – a sort of simplistic and chic themed hue, to match the
surroundings and facilities of the renowned campus.
The food and beverage sold and served by the kiosks are certified organic which gives
the meaning of naturally grown and processed food. Each kiosk should present a
menu in its range of specialties, such as a fruit juices and organic salads. Healthy and
homemade recipes will go into the preparation of these simple bites, snacks and small
meals with the main purpose of reminding all at campus about the vitality of a little
‘nature food’, paired with relaxing views, sights and sound right beside the lake.
4) Constructing a purposeful overall landscape
To cater the potential crowd attracted to the food from the kiosks, sitting places are
necessary, especially being right next to the lake. Simple street furniture like benches
and tables should be brought in and placed at strategic spots at the site, avoiding the
direct glare of the sun, paired with proper rain protection. Designed with the same
intention, these hardscapes are constructed using the same material and structure, also
to match the kiosks and wooden deck. Not only that, suitable softscapes such as small
trees and shrubs should also be cultivated all around the area to provide a touch of
greenery and slight shading.
VISUALS
To illustrate the purpose and design intention of our proposal, below are some
drawings and diagrams.

In a nutshell, the food and beverage line is a booming sector filled with endless possibilities
and a broad future, just waiting to be discovered and ventured. As a large campus, serving
many different schools and courses, the increasing student population in turn, increases the
demand for food source. And there is no better option than to promote sustainable design,
organic foodstuff and nature all at the same time for the goodness and benefit of all.
We start with Promenegrate, Our Promenade.

  • 1. 1 INTRODUCTION TO THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY FINAL PROJECT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT INTAKE: FNBE 02214 GROUP MEMBERS: CHIA SUE HWA (0317920) ROZANNA FARAH IBRAM (0317967) LECTURER: PN. HASMANIRA MOKHTAR Pomegranate FOOD + BEVERAGE
  • 2. INTRODUCTION The final project for Introduction to the Construction Industry marks the end of the module and the subject. Starting off with the brief, the FNBE students were also given a short explanation on the nature of the assignment. In a group of 2 students, we need to find a specific land within campus area to initiate a small construction project of 30 times 30 metres that serves either one of the following purposes:  Recreation area  Study Enhancement Area  Rest area  Food and beverage (dining area)  Commercial area (exclude food and beverage) Following on that, we need to study and prepare the following types of building development, fulfilling requirements such as suggestion, rationale, benefits, site analysis, evaluation and the needs of the project to the client and to the community. This assignment will be graded based on a 20 page A4 report. Rozanna and I paired up as partners for this assignment. The themes were given randomly and our group received Food and Beverage as our construction theme. To start off, we had small brainstorming sessions and discussions besides trips to potential sites within campus. However, we both agreed on the best location for our construction project. Then, we delegated research topics individually and come together for weekly progress as a group. We achieved our aims as the deadline of the project drew closer but still provide room to develop ideas along the way.
  • 3. SITE ANALYSIS The Lake in Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus is an identity and core feature of the campus, and is known for it. A concrete promenade or walking path complete with canopy umbrellas and seating make for rest area, simply functioning for students and staff to get from one block to another, or to simply lounge by the lake to enjoy the scenery and bask in the natural feels of the natural environment. As the topic of our construction project is on food and beverage, we plan to carry out the actual project along the promenade as zoned in green above. We decided to base our project on this specific site because it has great potential to develop into an attractive food hub as it has the space for these activities, besides being next to the lake which is one of the main attractions for social activities in the campus. SITE SPECIFICATIONS An overview: The campus and lake Location plan of the campus Site location in the campus LOCATION: Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus SITE LOCATION: The Lakeside Promenade LOCATION: Along the east side of the campus lake, behind Block C, D and E AREA: 40 metres by 22.7 metres
  • 4.  Original Site The four directions of our site consists of different elements: Looking North – The main administration block and the steps leading down to the lake can be seen. Besides that, the front part of the lake and the concrete promenade Looking East – The buildings of Blocks C, D and E. A small man-made lake and shaded corner are also present. Looking South – The whole length of our site is visible. A small portion of the carpark space beyond Block E can also be seen. Looking West – A clear view commercial block and Syopz Mall from the promenade.

  • 6. CONCEPT Given that our topic is Food and Beverage, we explored a variety of possible ideas and concepts that could be incorporated into this construction project. Thanks to internet research, we found an array of very viable and justifiable options to select from. The combination of the following concepts form a complete and possible project  Food Kiosks Food kiosks are a smaller-scale, faster and more efficient version of built-in shops or restaurants. Usually seen in malls, at events and public spaces, these miniature stalls produce snacks and small bites for public.  Container spaces Containers are a new trend for small enterprises and businesses. Stylish and edgy, the metal outlook and geometric shape of a container ‘box’ create a small space and room for activities. Besides radiating the message of using recyclable materials, the physical structure is also space and money saving.  Farmer’s Market concept L to R: Baum Kuchen pop-up village in Tokyo > Korean food kiosk Koki and Vegi at the Brooklyn Bridge L to R: Chic restaurant > Shipping container turned café design > Recycled information central
  • 7. The concept of farmer markets is a physical retail market featuring foods sold directly by farmers to consumers. Farmers' markets exist worldwide and reflect their local culture and economy. The core idea of this type of market is that organic food supplies, brought straight from the farm, is being traded directly with consumers. In this era, more unnatural food and beverage is being overproduced, causing dire health consequences on the people. This can be seen on campus itself, where insufficient fresh fruit and vegetable as a daily consumption is minimum and instead replaced with manufactured food supplies and quick snacks. Demolishing that idea, we propose to introduce the idea of quickly-prepared bites and beverages made only from organically-grown food. L to R: Santa Monics’s Farmer’s Market > healthy graphic art > Healthy People for Healthy Food  Promenade Taking inspiration from the Promenade Samuel-De Champlain in Quebec, a contemporary, polished look is a major feature of this construction project. Beige coloured wood and straight angles give a clean look whereas minimalistic and native softscape complements it perfectly.
  • 8. MAIN IDEA The concepts extracted from the existing projects above form a whole new idea for our food and beverage themed construction project. Our main project: A built extension as a means for more space to create more lounging and activity areas. A row of food kiosks built on the existing concrete promenade, creating a zone for food and beverage trade. Lastly, to improve on the existing softscape and hardscape and further enhance the attractiveness and effectiveness of the lakeside promenade as a ‘chilling out’ zone by constructing more people-friendly facilities. Below is a list of our details on the construction project as a whole 1) Pomegranate, Our Promenade. One of the oldest known fruits, found in writings and artefacts of many cultures and religions, the pomegranate (punica granatum) is an original native of Persia. This nutrient dense, antioxidant rich fruit has been revered as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life. Pomegranate is proven to inhibit breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, leukaemia and to prevent vascular changes that promote tumour growth, besides improving symptoms of depression and increasing bone mass in lab animals. Combining the words promenade and pomegranate, the word Pomegranate is created. Selecting this name for our construction project is due to many reasons, mainly, its major health benefit which is to retain youth and health. This is what Pomegranate is meant to reflect on: the vitality and life of the campus society, by further promoting Simplicity and strength is expressed using wood.
  • 9. organic and fresh food. Besides that, the bright fuchsia colour of the fruit also depicts the youthful personality of the campus and its inhabitants, being the inspiration of the colour scheme of the container food kiosk and its design. 2) Wooden deck extension In our proposal, we plan to build an extension from the concrete walkway towards the lake. This extra space allows more room for walking circulation and also for visitors to lounge along the lake while eating the food bought from the stalls and interacting among one another. 3) Food kiosks Five small food kiosks selling organically-grown and made food. These food kiosks have a united outlook to radiate a united identity that is they are literally housed in recycled, steel shipping containers. Besides that, these containers have the same size, shape, colour and design – a sort of simplistic and chic themed hue, to match the surroundings and facilities of the renowned campus. The food and beverage sold and served by the kiosks are certified organic which gives the meaning of naturally grown and processed food. Each kiosk should present a menu in its range of specialties, such as a fruit juices and organic salads. Healthy and homemade recipes will go into the preparation of these simple bites, snacks and small meals with the main purpose of reminding all at campus about the vitality of a little ‘nature food’, paired with relaxing views, sights and sound right beside the lake. 4) Constructing a purposeful overall landscape To cater the potential crowd attracted to the food from the kiosks, sitting places are necessary, especially being right next to the lake. Simple street furniture like benches and tables should be brought in and placed at strategic spots at the site, avoiding the direct glare of the sun, paired with proper rain protection. Designed with the same intention, these hardscapes are constructed using the same material and structure, also to match the kiosks and wooden deck. Not only that, suitable softscapes such as small trees and shrubs should also be cultivated all around the area to provide a touch of greenery and slight shading.

  • 13. Normal seating Small and casual street furniture are well-suited for this area of the promenade. Spots of softscape could also be incorporated to give a natural feel to the surroundings. A beautiful shot of a food market in Istanbul.
  • 14. In a nutshell, the food and beverage line is a booming sector filled with endless possibilities and a broad future, just waiting to be discovered and ventured. As a large campus, serving many different schools and courses, the increasing student population in turn, increases the demand for food source. And there is no better option than to promote sustainable design, organic foodstuff and nature all at the same time for the goodness and benefit of all. We start with Promenegrate, Our Promenade.
