REPUTE partners have been holding workshops
throughout the region over the last few months.
Getting the word out there on the latest
developments in renewable energy is a very
important part of the project. The workshops
brought together the various stakeholders - from
public transport operators, to policy makers, to
experts in renewable energy - providing lots of
opportunities for knowledge sharing and
networking.
Information provision is one of the central aims of
REPUTE. Throughout the winter of 2014 the
project hosted workshops in many of the partner
countries throughout the region with more to
come in 2015. The workshops are a fantastic way
of bringing together policy makers, professionals
from the transport industry, academics and
anyone else who has a stake in or an interest in
sustainable transport in order to share
information and identify challenges and
opportunities.
Most cases have been a blend of information
sessions and work sessions where participants
are first updated on recent trends in renewable
energy and energy efficiency and then given the
opportunity to share their perspectives and
outlook on the subject. This has been a great way
for policy makers and private enterprise to
network and exchange their views. Creating a
forum for government agencies and transport
operators – the workshops have highlighted the
importance of having a neutral meeting space to
circulate information on new technologies,
innovations and new policy directions between
the many industry stakeholders.
Another important factor in these exchange
meetings is that people get to hear the views of
people working in a different sector of the
industry. Renewable Energy in public transport
involves inputs from a very broad range of
activities and discipline such as policy and
regulation, engineering, IT development and
behaviour change. Often people working in these
roles are not linked in with the other stakeholders
in the field. The REPUTE workshops are a
fantastic way of bridging the gap between these
disciplines and creating opportunities for the
different stakeholders to work together more
closely.
So far workshops have been held in Northern
Ireland, La Rochelle, Ireland and Asturias. In
2015 we will host workshops in Glasgow and the
Oste region of Portugal. These last two
workshops will be focusing on REPUTE’s exciting
pilot projects.
Despite being held in different regions throughout
the Atlantic Area – the themes of affordability,
greater use of ICT, the need to encourage
behaviour change as well as the challenges of
accessibility felt by residents of peripheral areas
were common themes to all the workshops.
All the presentations can be viewed at

Workshops
France
In November the EIGSI Engineering school held the
French REPUTE workshop in the regional capital,
Poitiers. The agenda of this information and work
session was prepared in partnership with two regional
energy networks: “le pole des eco-industries” and “les
mardis de l’électromobilité”.
Twenty seven stakeholders registered for the workshop –
these were mainly from the energy sector. The
discussion was focused on electro mobility and Q&A
exchanges addressed the notion of public transport and
the changing emphasis from public transport to publicly
available transport. There were also discussions on the
use of nuclear power and the issue of energy storage in
electric cars through the use of fuel cells.
The opening session - presented by Nicolas Meilhan,
principal consultant at Frost, focused on clean
transportation & renewable energies. Nicolas will also
present at the Portugal leg of the REPUTE tour this
coming June.To view presentations please follow this link:

Northern Ireland
The Northern Ireland workshop was hosted by Action
Renewables and South West College, in the STEM
Centre at South West College, Dungannon. The
workshop was a big success, with almost 50 participants
from the public, private, academia and third sectors.
Topics covered included Northern Ireland’s public
transport policy and developments, Translink’s strategy
for delivering public transport services, the future for
renewable energy in transport and exemplar case
studies of renewable energy integration in transport.
Mark Mitchell, from globally leading bus manufacturer
WrightBus, gave a presentation on the company’s
innovative work in creating sustainable transport
solutions. Mark praised the work of REPUTE: seeing it
as “a great example of how Central European
Government, Local Government, Academia and Local
Business can come together to create, coordinate and
implement a more sustainable transport network”.
The range of speakers and topics covered in the South
West College Workshop was a great example of bringing
together key stakeholders - a key focus of REPUTE
Presentations were also made from the NI Department
of Regional Development, national transport operator
Translink, Oxfordshire County Council, Queens
University Belfast and South West College.

Republic of Ireland
The REPUTE workshop on renewable energy in
Limerick afforded the opportunity for a wide range of
stakeholders from the transportation industry in Ireland
to come together and share their views on the significant
opportunities posed by recent developments in
renewable energy.
Representatives from the Department of Transport
Tourism and Sport, Limerick City & County Council, Bus
Eireann, the Coach Tourism & Transport Council of
Ireland, the Tipperary energy agency and LIT were in
attendance.
Transport consultant Graham Lightfoot gave a
comprehensive presentation on new developments in
renewable energy and energy efficiency and how they
might be utilised by Ireland’s transportation industry.
Denise Keoghan of the Department of Tourism and
Sport’s Sustainable Transport Division outlined some of
the measures and underlying policies currently being
undertaken by the Government.
The presentations were given in a workshop format and
there was lots of input from the participants. Some of the
key learning from the workshop was that there has been
very significant advances in technology in recent years.
This has served to make a combination of renewable
energy and efficiency approaches much more viable and
cost effective than they have been to date. Mobile
technology, improvements in engine performance, kinetic
energy recovery and compressed natural gas all provide
opportunities for Irish transportation.
There is a real potential for the newest generation for
renewable energy and energy efficiency practices to
deliver savings. What’s needed now is the political and
financial will.
Asturias
The workshop in Oviedo was attended by
representatives from local administrations, universities
and private companies. During the discussion it was
highlighted by local administrators that for economic
reasons it will be very difficult to introduce renewable
energies in public transport in the short term. Efficient
use of available services is a much more attractive
option. Information and communications technology that
provides up to date transport information helping people
to plan their routes is the most cost effective way of
creating positive change towards more environmentally
friendly transport
Some of the municipalities from rural area are interested
in developing shared usage of transport. An example of
this would be making free seats on school buses
available for other people traveling the same route,
thereby reducing their dependence on taxis and private
cars.

Around the Regions
World’s first electric car journey planning tool launched
in Northern Ireland
The world’s first web based electric car journey planning tool was launched at the BATTERIE Project
closing conference, held at Titanic Belfast in November 2014.
BATTERIE, a European Regional Development funded project, through the Atlantic Area, was established to
improve the cooperation and links between various transport services across Europe and to promote the
application of smart technologies and usage of alternative fuels. Action Renewables and South West College,
who are also partners in REPUTE, led the delivery of the BATTERIE Project in Northern Ireland.
The unique journey planning tool, which is being piloted in Ireland, is now available for public use and can be
accessed online at www.egomap.eu .Optimised for mobile use, users can enter start point and destination
information and then receive suggested routes that consider electric vehicle charging facilities as well providing information on the cost of the journey, CO2 emissions
and savings.
The tool compares public transport and private combustion vehicle travel against electric vehicle travel providing users with a breakdown of transport fares and
emissions. It also takes into account how long it may take to charge an electric vehicle - if needed on the journey - in order to give users the most efficient route to their
destination.
Speaking from BATTERIE closing conference, Dr John Harrison, BATTERIE Project Manager, South West College said:
“We are thrilled to be launching the world’s first dedicated online intermodal journey planning tool and
would like to encourage all electric vehicle drivers to avail of the service. Northern Ireland has one of the
highest concentrations of electric vehicle charge points in the world – 174 in total including 160 fast
chargers and 14 rapid chargers – making it the ideal location to pilot this initiative.”
Actions Renewables, BATTERIE Project Manager,Terry Waugh commented:
“A vibrant, alternatively fuelled transport sector not only helps the environment but can contribute
massively to economic growth and transport efficiency” As electric cars grow in popularity, an accurate
and user friendly planning tool can make the experience even more enjoyable”.
Indeed, one of the BATTERIE conference delegates put the project to the test test by driving his electric car from the Netherlands to the conference in Belfast and
successfully using the electric planning tool when he reached Northern Ireland.
Ambitious Targets for Renewable Energy in France
French environment minister Ségolène Royal’s proposals on energy transition
was adopted into law by The National Assembly on October the 14th, 2014.
For details see http://www.cop21.gouv.fr/en
Presented as the “most ambitious in all of the European Union” the law sets
targets to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 32% by 2030,
reduce CO2 emissions by 40% between 1990 and 2030, and reduce the
consumption of fossil fuels by 30% by 2030.
Nuclear energy will gradually decrease but will still remain at the centre of
France’s energy transition. The proportion of nuclear in electricity consumption
is set to decrease from 75% currently to 50% by 2025.
Although the French targets for CO2 emissions are the same as those set by
the EU Commission, the ambitious targets on renewable energy go above
and beyond.
The European Commission's energy and climate package for 2030, presented
in January, set out targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% compared to
1990 levels and ramp up renewable energies to 27% of the bloc's energy mix.
These targets are Europe-wide, not national, and still need to be endorsed
by EU leaders.
As Paris will host the
UN’s climate
conference in
December 2015,
“France must set
an example,” said
the French minister.
Limerick hops on bike share movement
The Coca-Cola Zero bike share scheme
was launched in Limerick in December. At
the launch Minister Jan O Sullivan
urging, everyone to get out of their cars,
said that the bike scheme would make
Limerick a safer and a more accessible
city.
Deputy Mayor Maria Byrne pointed out
that Limerick City and County Council,
through Limerick Smarter Travel, has been very
active during the last couple of years in getting people to
consider alternative, more sustainable travel methods. The roll out of the
Coca-Cola Zero Bikes promotes a form of public transport that is healthy,
inexpensive, and central to establishing Limerick as a successful
Smarter Travel City.
Bike share schemes have grown at a very rapid rate in recent years.
Over 500 cities in 50 countries are now operating bike share schemes.
Urban mobility expert Peter Midgley describes this growth as “ the fastest
growth of any mode of transport in the history of the planet.” The concept of
mobility is slowly changing and this move away from motor vehicles in cities
and towards shared forms of transport is a trend that is set to continue. As the
former Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë pointed out, “automobiles no
longer have a place in the big cities of our times.”

News from the Industry
Recovering economies see increase
in transport use
A STUDY by the International Association of
Public Transport (UITP) of urban public transport
usage in the European Union (EU) between 2000
and 2012 shows that ridership has now
recovered since the slump in 2009. Traffic has
been increasing steadily from 45.6 billion in 2000
to 47.1 billion in 2005 to 49.5.billion in 2012.
Urban public transport usage varies widely
across the EU. Demand has fallen in eastern
Europe by between 4% and 24% and grown in
the more affluent western member states, with
the highest rates of growth in Austria (+24%),
Britain (+19%), France (+29%), Germany (+12%),
Luxembourg (+50%), and Sweden (+24%).
These figures compare with an average rate of
growth of 8%.
The number of journeys taken on Northern
Ireland Railways was up 15% to 13.1 million,
which according to Translink was the highest
since the 1960s.
Sustainable mobility crucial to
the future of India’s cities, says
Rajnish Ahuja
REPUTE conference guest and sustainable
energy expert Rajnish Ahuja stresses that smart
sustainable mobility will be a critical factor to
India’s continued growth. Migration from rural to
urban areas of India has been increasing. By
2050, 70 per cent of the population will be living
in cities. Infrasturcture in Indian cities is struggling
to cope with the existing population and will not
be able to handle the projected increases. As
everything can now be connected via data, smart
technology will be key to driving future
development. New cities that are being planned,
need to be smart and sustainable.
Rajnish will share his experiences and ideas
with us in June when he joins the REPUTE
conference tour.
REPUTE Guide to energy and
publicly-accessible transport in
rural areas
As part of their contribution to REPUTE Oxford
Brookes University are producing a guide that
provides a single point of reference for public
transport challenges in rural areas. It will provide
valuable information for policy makers, transport
operators and communities. It puts into context
the transport and energy challenges in rural
areas, and evaluates the best practice to inform
future activities. A working draft was circulated to
the REPUTE Partners in January 2015. This
version will be updated and enhanced with inputs
from workshops and interactions with other EU
projects. A final version will be made available at
the end of the project.
European transport-related greenhouse gas
(GHG) emissions account currently for 25% of
all European emissions and are expected to
continue to rise at about 6% per year. Sustainable
transport requires a radical shift in investment
towards providing fast and efficient public
transport systems. However people in rural areas
typically travel 50% further than their
counterparts in urban areas and most of these
journeys are undertaken by bus or car. It is not
economically viable to serve diffuse rural
communities with a regular public transport
network. New business models are therefore
required to provide total transport solutions.
A number of imaginative schemes exist that
connect to rural public transport hubs through
community-run schemes, shared ownership
of transport resources and bespoke
on-demand services.
The context and motivation for catalyzing
transport changes are outlined in the Guide.
The regions associated with the project partners
are described, analyzed in terms of energy and
transport, and then categorized with our REPUTE
Index. We show that the key drivers for change
include community engagement, and local
energy initiatives and policies. The introduction
of cost-effective, energy-saving, technologies is
also significant.
Summary points from the
forthcoming REPUTE Guide
• Rural public transport hubs need to be built and
connected by express services to major
destinations
• Total transport solutions are required for rural
communities where pooling of resources and
voluntary actions can provide a service
Community transport – Talybont energy zero carbon car
share scheme
• Total transport hubs could be accessed by, and
could provide shared transport means for, users
of shared transport options (minibuses, e-bikes,
etc.) including community-run schemes
• Many rural public transport services generate
a lot of greenhouse gas emissions when
under-utilized
• Electrically-powered vehicles can provide a
compelling way of reducing emissions, provided
that they use low-carbon electricity
• Future transport will have to use more energy
derived from natural resources – solar, wind,
tidal, hydro, biomass, etc.
Renewable energy – GENeco biobus, Bristol
• There is a compelling case for rural transport
to use biofuels derived from waste biomass
resources such as spent oils, food waste and
farm residues
• Renewable energy sources can be owned,
operated and controlled in rural areas through
community actions and local partnerships. The
energy generated can be used directly or
indirectly in local transport
• Community actions in rural areas have the
potential to provide local total transport
solutions through a combination of public and
private transportation enterprise.

REPUTE’s Two
Pilots Launching
in February
Solar charged electric vehicles
for hire
REPUTE partners Oeste CIM will soon unveil an
exciting pilot project utilising electric vehicles in
the Oeste region of Portugual. The project will
see an electric vehicle installed at the central
coach station at each of the 12 municipalities in
the region. The vehicles will be charged by a foto
voltaic system applied on a car park shadow
frame and will be available for rental by members
of the public.
The EV users will be able to reserve a car using a
web platform, which will also track the cars usage
and location.
The project will be launched in February. Check
www.reputeproject.eu for updates.
Scottish Pilot Tests and Workshops
REPUTE is planning two pilot tests of market
stimulation in Scotland, in partnership with
HITRANS, the regional transport agency for the
Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The first of
these is a test of two transport information signs,
powered by renewable energy, to be located on
poles at existing bus stops in remote regions in
Scotland.
The second of these is a test of a Personal Travel
Planning (PTP) campaign. The project will see
PTP take place in key locations within Fort
William including schools and workplaces. An
important element will be selected PTP taking
place on a ‘door to door’ basis within the sections
of the community which are likely to achieve the
best change in modal share for active travel.
Another key element of this project will be the
development of a toolkit for the PTP exercise, so
that it can be delivered in other project areas
within the REPUTE project, and also within other
locations in the HITRANS region.
The implementation of these pilots is due this
February. A Workshop will be held on the 28th
April 2014, in Inverness, to discuss the REPUTE
pilot projects in Scotland. Details of this workshop
will follow on the REPUTE WEBSITE in the
coming weeks.
Make sure to keep checking the REPUTE
Website for updates on these pilot’s progress!

project partners will share the learning and
innovations from the REPUTE’s pilot projects and
best practice guide with transport professionals,
policy makers and other stakeholders at a series
of themed conferences in Scotland, Northern
Ireland, France, Spain, and Portugal.
The idea of doing a conference tour is to help
generate publicity around the issue of public
transport and the need to engage more people
and policy makers in the debate about clean
transport, energy efficiency and renewable
energy.
Truly Global
By traveling together to the venues the project
partners and their invited guests will see real
examples of public transport challenges along
with innovative solutions and report on these
through blogging, twitter feeds and presentations
at the conferences.
The conference tour will be an actual tour and a
virtual tour where people concerned about
mobility issues can contribute from anywhere in
the world.
Different Themes
Conferences will provide an
overview of renewable energy in
public transport as well as a
presentation on the content of the
REPUTE best practice guide.
At each of the stops along the way
we will host a conference – each
with a slightly different theme.
In Scotland where the first of the REPUTE pilot
projects is being demonstrated the conference
will explore the area of personalized travel
planning and the potential of information
provision in maximizing the effectiveness of
public transport as alternative to the private car.
The Northern Ireland conference will look at ways
of stimulating enterprise and developing the
use of renewable energy and energy efficiency in
all forms of public transport. This leg of the
conference tour will be of particular interest to
transport providers from the private sector.

www.reputeproject.eu/northern-ireland-repute-workshop-great-success
The Department of Regional
Development in Northern Ireland are
currently delivering two major transport
infrastructure projects – Belfast on the
Move and Belfast Rapid Transport.
The main aim of Belfast on the Move is
to reorganise traffic management within
Belfast city centre, to facilitate a
reduction in general traffic levels and
encourage greater walking, cycling and
public transport use. This will require the
redistribution of available road space in
favour of public transport and cyclists
Some key project deliverables achieved
to date include 2.6km of new bus lanes,
which also accommodate cyclists, motor-
cyclists and permitted taxis, in addition to
0.8km of new dedicated cycle lanes.
This project is still under way, although
has realised a number of modal shift
benefits so far, including:
• Over 1,900 less vehicles entering the
city in the morning peak & around
• 10,900 less vehicles entering the city
over a 24 hour period.
• increase walking - Over 12% more
pedestrians entering the city centre
during the morning peak.
• increased cycling - Over 18% more
cyclists entering the city centre during
the morning peak.
• increased public transport usage -
Over 36% more rail passengers and
over 17% more bus passengers
entering the city centre during the
morning peak.
Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT) is an
innovative and ambitious project that will
create a new and dynamic public
transport system for Belfast. Work on the
project began in 2014 with the
introduction of new park and ride
facilities, and is due to finish in 2017. The
BRT system will use high quality rapid
transit vehicles which will provide a
modern, comfortable environment for
passengers in terms of space, security
and on-board information.
The BRT system will also incorporate
high quality halts with easy access to
vehicles, real time information systems
for easier journey planning and off-
vehicle ticketing to speed up the
boarding process. The speed, reliability
and comfort of the BRT services will
provide an attractive alternative to
private car use.

in general at the end of March 2015. La
Rochelle is the site of one of the main
CityMobil2 demonstrations of automated
road passenger transport systems, which
operates from December 2014 until
March 2015.
A wider take-up of cyber-mobility across
the European cities promises to change
deeply the car industry and other private
and public sectors. This is the subject of
CityMobil2's first workshop on the Socio-
economic impact of road transport
automation, to be held in La Rochelle on
30th and 31st March 2015. Meeting
participation will have an international
flavor, with delegates from Europe, the
United States and Japan among others.

  • 2. 2 REPUTE partners have been holding workshops throughout the region over the last few months. Getting the word out there on the latest developments in renewable energy is a very important part of the project. The workshops brought together the various stakeholders - from public transport operators, to policy makers, to experts in renewable energy - providing lots of opportunities for knowledge sharing and networking. Information provision is one of the central aims of REPUTE. Throughout the winter of 2014 the project hosted workshops in many of the partner countries throughout the region with more to come in 2015. The workshops are a fantastic way of bringing together policy makers, professionals from the transport industry, academics and anyone else who has a stake in or an interest in sustainable transport in order to share information and identify challenges and opportunities. Most cases have been a blend of information sessions and work sessions where participants are first updated on recent trends in renewable energy and energy efficiency and then given the opportunity to share their perspectives and outlook on the subject. This has been a great way for policy makers and private enterprise to network and exchange their views. Creating a forum for government agencies and transport operators – the workshops have highlighted the importance of having a neutral meeting space to circulate information on new technologies, innovations and new policy directions between the many industry stakeholders. Another important factor in these exchange meetings is that people get to hear the views of people working in a different sector of the industry. Renewable Energy in public transport involves inputs from a very broad range of activities and discipline such as policy and regulation, engineering, IT development and behaviour change. Often people working in these roles are not linked in with the other stakeholders in the field. The REPUTE workshops are a fantastic way of bridging the gap between these disciplines and creating opportunities for the different stakeholders to work together more closely. So far workshops have been held in Northern Ireland, La Rochelle, Ireland and Asturias. In 2015 we will host workshops in Glasgow and the Oste region of Portugal. These last two workshops will be focusing on REPUTE’s exciting pilot projects. Despite being held in different regions throughout the Atlantic Area – the themes of affordability, greater use of ICT, the need to encourage behaviour change as well as the challenges of accessibility felt by residents of peripheral areas were common themes to all the workshops. All the presentations can be viewed at www.reputeproject.eu/workshops/ Workshops France In November the EIGSI Engineering school held the French REPUTE workshop in the regional capital, Poitiers. The agenda of this information and work session was prepared in partnership with two regional energy networks: “le pole des eco-industries” and “les mardis de l’électromobilité”. Twenty seven stakeholders registered for the workshop – these were mainly from the energy sector. The discussion was focused on electro mobility and Q&A exchanges addressed the notion of public transport and the changing emphasis from public transport to publicly available transport. There were also discussions on the use of nuclear power and the issue of energy storage in electric cars through the use of fuel cells. The opening session - presented by Nicolas Meilhan, principal consultant at Frost, focused on clean transportation & renewable energies. Nicolas will also present at the Portugal leg of the REPUTE tour this coming June.To view presentations please follow this link: http://www.reputeproject.eu/la-rochelle-workshop- presentations/ Northern Ireland The Northern Ireland workshop was hosted by Action Renewables and South West College, in the STEM Centre at South West College, Dungannon. The workshop was a big success, with almost 50 participants from the public, private, academia and third sectors. Topics covered included Northern Ireland’s public transport policy and developments, Translink’s strategy for delivering public transport services, the future for renewable energy in transport and exemplar case studies of renewable energy integration in transport. Mark Mitchell, from globally leading bus manufacturer WrightBus, gave a presentation on the company’s innovative work in creating sustainable transport solutions. Mark praised the work of REPUTE: seeing it as “a great example of how Central European Government, Local Government, Academia and Local Business can come together to create, coordinate and implement a more sustainable transport network”. The range of speakers and topics covered in the South West College Workshop was a great example of bringing together key stakeholders - a key focus of REPUTE Presentations were also made from the NI Department of Regional Development, national transport operator Translink, Oxfordshire County Council, Queens University Belfast and South West College. For more information on the workshop and speaker presentations, please follow this link: www.reputeproject.eu/northern-ireland-repute- workshop-great-success/ Republic of Ireland The REPUTE workshop on renewable energy in Limerick afforded the opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders from the transportation industry in Ireland to come together and share their views on the significant opportunities posed by recent developments in renewable energy. Representatives from the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport, Limerick City & County Council, Bus Eireann, the Coach Tourism & Transport Council of Ireland, the Tipperary energy agency and LIT were in attendance. Transport consultant Graham Lightfoot gave a comprehensive presentation on new developments in renewable energy and energy efficiency and how they might be utilised by Ireland’s transportation industry. Denise Keoghan of the Department of Tourism and Sport’s Sustainable Transport Division outlined some of the measures and underlying policies currently being undertaken by the Government. The presentations were given in a workshop format and there was lots of input from the participants. Some of the key learning from the workshop was that there has been very significant advances in technology in recent years. This has served to make a combination of renewable energy and efficiency approaches much more viable and cost effective than they have been to date. Mobile technology, improvements in engine performance, kinetic energy recovery and compressed natural gas all provide opportunities for Irish transportation. There is a real potential for the newest generation for renewable energy and energy efficiency practices to deliver savings. What’s needed now is the political and financial will. Asturias The workshop in Oviedo was attended by representatives from local administrations, universities and private companies. During the discussion it was highlighted by local administrators that for economic reasons it will be very difficult to introduce renewable energies in public transport in the short term. Efficient use of available services is a much more attractive option. Information and communications technology that provides up to date transport information helping people to plan their routes is the most cost effective way of creating positive change towards more environmentally friendly transport Some of the municipalities from rural area are interested in developing shared usage of transport. An example of this would be making free seats on school buses available for other people traveling the same route, thereby reducing their dependence on taxis and private cars. repute_newsletter2_english_Layout 1 18/02/2015 11:07 Page 2
  • 3. 3 Newsletter February 2015 Around the Regions World’s first electric car journey planning tool launched in Northern Ireland The world’s first web based electric car journey planning tool was launched at the BATTERIE Project closing conference, held at Titanic Belfast in November 2014. BATTERIE, a European Regional Development funded project, through the Atlantic Area, was established to improve the cooperation and links between various transport services across Europe and to promote the application of smart technologies and usage of alternative fuels. Action Renewables and South West College, who are also partners in REPUTE, led the delivery of the BATTERIE Project in Northern Ireland. The unique journey planning tool, which is being piloted in Ireland, is now available for public use and can be accessed online at www.egomap.eu .Optimised for mobile use, users can enter start point and destination information and then receive suggested routes that consider electric vehicle charging facilities as well providing information on the cost of the journey, CO2 emissions and savings. The tool compares public transport and private combustion vehicle travel against electric vehicle travel providing users with a breakdown of transport fares and emissions. It also takes into account how long it may take to charge an electric vehicle - if needed on the journey - in order to give users the most efficient route to their destination. Speaking from BATTERIE closing conference, Dr John Harrison, BATTERIE Project Manager, South West College said: “We are thrilled to be launching the world’s first dedicated online intermodal journey planning tool and would like to encourage all electric vehicle drivers to avail of the service. Northern Ireland has one of the highest concentrations of electric vehicle charge points in the world – 174 in total including 160 fast chargers and 14 rapid chargers – making it the ideal location to pilot this initiative.” Actions Renewables, BATTERIE Project Manager,Terry Waugh commented: “A vibrant, alternatively fuelled transport sector not only helps the environment but can contribute massively to economic growth and transport efficiency” As electric cars grow in popularity, an accurate and user friendly planning tool can make the experience even more enjoyable”. Indeed, one of the BATTERIE conference delegates put the project to the test test by driving his electric car from the Netherlands to the conference in Belfast and successfully using the electric planning tool when he reached Northern Ireland. Ambitious Targets for Renewable Energy in France French environment minister Ségolène Royal’s proposals on energy transition was adopted into law by The National Assembly on October the 14th, 2014. For details see http://www.cop21.gouv.fr/en Presented as the “most ambitious in all of the European Union” the law sets targets to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 32% by 2030, reduce CO2 emissions by 40% between 1990 and 2030, and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels by 30% by 2030. Nuclear energy will gradually decrease but will still remain at the centre of France’s energy transition. The proportion of nuclear in electricity consumption is set to decrease from 75% currently to 50% by 2025. Although the French targets for CO2 emissions are the same as those set by the EU Commission, the ambitious targets on renewable energy go above and beyond. The European Commission's energy and climate package for 2030, presented in January, set out targets to reduce CO2 emissions by 40% compared to 1990 levels and ramp up renewable energies to 27% of the bloc's energy mix. These targets are Europe-wide, not national, and still need to be endorsed by EU leaders. As Paris will host the UN’s climate conference in December 2015, “France must set an example,” said the French minister. Limerick hops on bike share movement The Coca-Cola Zero bike share scheme was launched in Limerick in December. At the launch Minister Jan O Sullivan urging, everyone to get out of their cars, said that the bike scheme would make Limerick a safer and a more accessible city. Deputy Mayor Maria Byrne pointed out that Limerick City and County Council, through Limerick Smarter Travel, has been very active during the last couple of years in getting people to consider alternative, more sustainable travel methods. The roll out of the Coca-Cola Zero Bikes promotes a form of public transport that is healthy, inexpensive, and central to establishing Limerick as a successful Smarter Travel City. Bike share schemes have grown at a very rapid rate in recent years. Over 500 cities in 50 countries are now operating bike share schemes. Urban mobility expert Peter Midgley describes this growth as “ the fastest growth of any mode of transport in the history of the planet.” The concept of mobility is slowly changing and this move away from motor vehicles in cities and towards shared forms of transport is a trend that is set to continue. As the former Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë pointed out, “automobiles no longer have a place in the big cities of our times.” repute_newsletter2_english_Layout 1 18/02/2015 11:07 Page 3
  • 4. News from the Industry Recovering economies see increase in transport use A STUDY by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) of urban public transport usage in the European Union (EU) between 2000 and 2012 shows that ridership has now recovered since the slump in 2009. Traffic has been increasing steadily from 45.6 billion in 2000 to 47.1 billion in 2005 to 49.5.billion in 2012. Urban public transport usage varies widely across the EU. Demand has fallen in eastern Europe by between 4% and 24% and grown in the more affluent western member states, with the highest rates of growth in Austria (+24%), Britain (+19%), France (+29%), Germany (+12%), Luxembourg (+50%), and Sweden (+24%). These figures compare with an average rate of growth of 8%. The number of journeys taken on Northern Ireland Railways was up 15% to 13.1 million, which according to Translink was the highest since the 1960s. Sustainable mobility crucial to the future of India’s cities, says Rajnish Ahuja REPUTE conference guest and sustainable energy expert Rajnish Ahuja stresses that smart sustainable mobility will be a critical factor to India’s continued growth. Migration from rural to urban areas of India has been increasing. By 2050, 70 per cent of the population will be living in cities. Infrasturcture in Indian cities is struggling to cope with the existing population and will not be able to handle the projected increases. As everything can now be connected via data, smart technology will be key to driving future development. New cities that are being planned, need to be smart and sustainable. Rajnish will share his experiences and ideas with us in June when he joins the REPUTE conference tour. REPUTE Guide to energy and publicly-accessible transport in rural areas As part of their contribution to REPUTE Oxford Brookes University are producing a guide that provides a single point of reference for public transport challenges in rural areas. It will provide valuable information for policy makers, transport operators and communities. It puts into context the transport and energy challenges in rural areas, and evaluates the best practice to inform future activities. A working draft was circulated to the REPUTE Partners in January 2015. This version will be updated and enhanced with inputs from workshops and interactions with other EU projects. A final version will be made available at the end of the project. European transport-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions account currently for 25% of all European emissions and are expected to continue to rise at about 6% per year. Sustainable transport requires a radical shift in investment towards providing fast and efficient public transport systems. However people in rural areas typically travel 50% further than their counterparts in urban areas and most of these journeys are undertaken by bus or car. It is not economically viable to serve diffuse rural communities with a regular public transport network. New business models are therefore required to provide total transport solutions. A number of imaginative schemes exist that connect to rural public transport hubs through community-run schemes, shared ownership of transport resources and bespoke on-demand services. The context and motivation for catalyzing transport changes are outlined in the Guide. The regions associated with the project partners are described, analyzed in terms of energy and transport, and then categorized with our REPUTE Index. We show that the key drivers for change include community engagement, and local energy initiatives and policies. The introduction of cost-effective, energy-saving, technologies is also significant. Summary points from the forthcoming REPUTE Guide • Rural public transport hubs need to be built and connected by express services to major destinations • Total transport solutions are required for rural communities where pooling of resources and voluntary actions can provide a service Community transport – Talybont energy zero carbon car share scheme • Total transport hubs could be accessed by, and could provide shared transport means for, users of shared transport options (minibuses, e-bikes, etc.) including community-run schemes • Many rural public transport services generate a lot of greenhouse gas emissions when under-utilized • Electrically-powered vehicles can provide a compelling way of reducing emissions, provided that they use low-carbon electricity • Future transport will have to use more energy derived from natural resources – solar, wind, tidal, hydro, biomass, etc. Renewable energy – GENeco biobus, Bristol • There is a compelling case for rural transport to use biofuels derived from waste biomass resources such as spent oils, food waste and farm residues • Renewable energy sources can be owned, operated and controlled in rural areas through community actions and local partnerships. The energy generated can be used directly or indirectly in local transport • Community actions in rural areas have the potential to provide local total transport solutions through a combination of public and private transportation enterprise. 4 Energy-saving device – KERS (kinetic energy recover system)in buses in Oxford The final part of the Guide provides a set of case studies that describe activities and solutions to particular challenges. repute_newsletter2_english_Layout 1 18/02/2015 11:07 Page 4
  • 5. REPUTE’s Two Pilots Launching in February Solar charged electric vehicles for hire REPUTE partners Oeste CIM will soon unveil an exciting pilot project utilising electric vehicles in the Oeste region of Portugual. The project will see an electric vehicle installed at the central coach station at each of the 12 municipalities in the region. The vehicles will be charged by a foto voltaic system applied on a car park shadow frame and will be available for rental by members of the public. The EV users will be able to reserve a car using a web platform, which will also track the cars usage and location. The project will be launched in February. Check www.reputeproject.eu for updates. Scottish Pilot Tests and Workshops REPUTE is planning two pilot tests of market stimulation in Scotland, in partnership with HITRANS, the regional transport agency for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The first of these is a test of two transport information signs, powered by renewable energy, to be located on poles at existing bus stops in remote regions in Scotland. The second of these is a test of a Personal Travel Planning (PTP) campaign. The project will see PTP take place in key locations within Fort William including schools and workplaces. An important element will be selected PTP taking place on a ‘door to door’ basis within the sections of the community which are likely to achieve the best change in modal share for active travel. Another key element of this project will be the development of a toolkit for the PTP exercise, so that it can be delivered in other project areas within the REPUTE project, and also within other locations in the HITRANS region. The implementation of these pilots is due this February. A Workshop will be held on the 28th April 2014, in Inverness, to discuss the REPUTE pilot projects in Scotland. Details of this workshop will follow on the REPUTE WEBSITE in the coming weeks. Make sure to keep checking the REPUTE Website for updates on these pilot’s progress! 5 Newsletter February 2015 Atlantic Area Tour 2015 Renewable Energy & Public Transport For two weeks in June 2015 the REPUTE conference tour will travel throughout the Atlantic Area taking in all of the partner regions. The project partners will share the learning and innovations from the REPUTE’s pilot projects and best practice guide with transport professionals, policy makers and other stakeholders at a series of themed conferences in Scotland, Northern Ireland, France, Spain, and Portugal. The idea of doing a conference tour is to help generate publicity around the issue of public transport and the need to engage more people and policy makers in the debate about clean transport, energy efficiency and renewable energy. Truly Global By traveling together to the venues the project partners and their invited guests will see real examples of public transport challenges along with innovative solutions and report on these through blogging, twitter feeds and presentations at the conferences. The conference tour will be an actual tour and a virtual tour where people concerned about mobility issues can contribute from anywhere in the world. Different Themes Conferences will provide an overview of renewable energy in public transport as well as a presentation on the content of the REPUTE best practice guide. At each of the stops along the way we will host a conference – each with a slightly different theme. In Scotland where the first of the REPUTE pilot projects is being demonstrated the conference will explore the area of personalized travel planning and the potential of information provision in maximizing the effectiveness of public transport as alternative to the private car. The Northern Ireland conference will look at ways of stimulating enterprise and developing the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency in all forms of public transport. This leg of the conference tour will be of particular interest to transport providers from the private sector. On to beautiful La Rochelle in western France where the conference will turn its attention to “New energies for Green Transport”. La Rochelle is renowned for its commitment to urban ecology and for many years has been a leader in the areas of e-mobility and sustainable transport. In the city of Oviedo in Northern Spain the conference will look at the integration of Information and Communications Technologies with public transport. It will also look at the significant potential for enterprise development that come with the growing use of ICT transport apps. The last stop of the tour will be in Torres Vedras – the site of the second pilot project. This leg of the conference will examine Mobility in urban settings: Soft Modes of Transport & Electric Vehicles. • 7. 7 Newsletter February 2015 Belfast on the Move and Belfast Rapid Transport Projects For more information on both projects please visit this link: www.drdni.gov.uk/index/belfastonthemove.htm To view a presentation on both projects from Ciaran DeBurca – Director of Transport Project Division, Northern Ireland Department of Regional Development, please follow this link: www.reputeproject.eu/northern-ireland-repute-workshop-great-success The Department of Regional Development in Northern Ireland are currently delivering two major transport infrastructure projects – Belfast on the Move and Belfast Rapid Transport. The main aim of Belfast on the Move is to reorganise traffic management within Belfast city centre, to facilitate a reduction in general traffic levels and encourage greater walking, cycling and public transport use. This will require the redistribution of available road space in favour of public transport and cyclists Some key project deliverables achieved to date include 2.6km of new bus lanes, which also accommodate cyclists, motor- cyclists and permitted taxis, in addition to 0.8km of new dedicated cycle lanes. This project is still under way, although has realised a number of modal shift benefits so far, including: • Over 1,900 less vehicles entering the city in the morning peak & around • 10,900 less vehicles entering the city over a 24 hour period. • increase walking - Over 12% more pedestrians entering the city centre during the morning peak. • increased cycling - Over 18% more cyclists entering the city centre during the morning peak. • increased public transport usage - Over 36% more rail passengers and over 17% more bus passengers entering the city centre during the morning peak. Belfast Rapid Transit (BRT) is an innovative and ambitious project that will create a new and dynamic public transport system for Belfast. Work on the project began in 2014 with the introduction of new park and ride facilities, and is due to finish in 2017. The BRT system will use high quality rapid transit vehicles which will provide a modern, comfortable environment for passengers in terms of space, security and on-board information. The BRT system will also incorporate high quality halts with easy access to vehicles, real time information systems for easier journey planning and off- vehicle ticketing to speed up the boarding process. The speed, reliability and comfort of the BRT services will provide an attractive alternative to private car use.
