Rene-Robert LaSalle was a famous French explorer born in 1643 who studied many languages and history. He explored the Great Lakes region and Mississippi River valley in North America, claiming the entire Mississippi River basin for France. LaSalle died at age 43 while exploring Texas in 1687.
