Copyrights protect original creative works from unauthorized copying. The copyright holder must give permission before others use their work. For works created after 1978, copyright lasts until 70 years after the creator's death. Works can be automatically protected by copyright or registered with the copyright office for additional protections. More information is available from the U.S. Copyright Office.
