Social influence differs from persuasion because persuasion is the change in attitudes and not necessarily behavior. The three primary categories of social influence are: conformity, compliance, and obedience. Choose one category then discuss an instance you were affected by it. Could you prevent it from happening now? Why or why not? 2. I have had to change my attitude many times in my life. One example of a time that was really difficult for me to change my attitude was when I was faced with the fact that my family had to move back to a city near my hometown, that we had previously lived in, that I really disliked. The reason we had to move back was due to a job loss in our current area. A slow economy made it very hard for my husband to find a new job in our current area and in other more desirable areas. My husband was the main provider in our family at the time, because I was a stay at home mom taking care of very young kids. My husband finally was able to land a job after trying very hard for over 5 months. He had been unemployed the entire 5 months and it was getting really scary trying to take care of our family at that point. The job he was able to land was back in the area we had previously lived that I disliked very much. I literally moved back there kicking and screaming, but I knew how hard my husband had tried and that we had literally no other options. That didn’t stop me from feeling very negative and internally having a very bad attitude. I had to learn to focus on the things I was thankful for in order to get my attitude to change. The factors that kept me from changing my attitude sooner were seeing all the negatives instead of the positives involved in the situation. I found myself totally focused in on the negatives for the longest time. After learning a big lesson from that situation, I would put that knowledge to use when trying to help others change their attitude. I would work to help them see all the positives and all the good that could come out of the situation rather than dwelling on the negatives. .

I was the only one who hadnt experienced and the only one to become successful. I knew there had to be a way to help these men see life in a different way. this situation is important to me because this was all I knew growing up and if I could overcome the negativity I knew my positive would shine so that they could see there was another way and doing things another way of life. I behaved two different ways to the situation. the first way in which I behave was trying to fit in and be like which I grew up and was hanging with. since this was all I knew I wanted to fit it and to be liked, but after a while I started to realize that this isnt what life was about. my other behavioral response to the situation was knowing that life had more to offer than what I was getting. things didn't seem to be right when I was trying to do it that way when I realize that I could work a job and get an education to make a decent salary and prepare myself for a higher success, that's when things started to change within myself and people surrounding me. during the situation I was so confused on what was going on. A question that I asked myself over and over was why am I allowing myself to become a product of my environment. I had to think over and over on why it took much time for me to receive this answer during my thinking process I evaluated my pros and cons of the situation and realize my pros of being successful and A man out weighed my cons of taking chances of becoming some trouble adult t bound for Jail. can learn much from what does not work. This first case is an example of this. The second case
shows the importance of avoiding failure by focusing on resolution rather than solution. Most
problems cannot be solved but they can be resolved.
Rather than feeling discouraged or disappointed when something does not work, be excited
that you are one step closer to resolving the problem. Ask yourself what can be learned from the
failure in terms of which components of the plan need to be discarded and which components
need to be altered. Presbury, Echterling & McKee (2008, p. 263) wrote, “So-called failure is
merely a message that what you have tried isn’t working. As it is with cybernetic ‘smart
missiles,’ negative feedback will give clues to the location of the target. The future is
teleonomic, so failure is simply a course correction in the general direction of success.” The

Robin’s parents had disowned her several weeks prior to her coming to see me. Robin grew
up in a very controlling family. When she went away to college, she developed problems with
anorexic behavior and panic attacks. Recently she had been plagued with memories of bad
experiences from her childhood. During our first session, I said very little. I listened as she told
me her story. I suggested an assignment of writing down the memories as they came to her and
bringing those to the next session.
In our second session, as we looked through the record of her memories, the clear theme was
fear. She feared disappointing her parents, being a failure and being abandoned. She heard two
voices in her head; one voice told her that she was going to fail, and the other voice told her that
everything would be okay. These voices created anxiety and instigated a need to flee. The result
was a panic attack.
I focused on her desire to run away and asked what would happen if every time she began
this series—feeling afraid, hearing the voices and wanting to run away—she would mentally
hide behind a thick piece of plate glass until the fear subsided. We experimented with Robin
focusing on several of the memories that had caused panic attacks. As she went through feeling
afraid, hearing the voices and reaching the point of wanting to run away, she would mentally

Paying attention to feedback is important. It is important to see failure as feedback. You
can learn much from what does not work. This first case is an example of this. The second case
shows the importance of avoiding failure by focusing on resolution rather than solution. Most
problems cannot be solved but they can be resolved.
Rather than feeling discouraged or disappointed when something does not work, be excited
that you are one step closer to resolving the problem. Ask yourself what can be learned from the
failure in terms of which components of the plan need to be discarded and which components
need to be altered. Presbury, Echterling & McKee (2008, p. 263) wrote, “So-called failure is
merely a message that what you have tried isn’t working. As it is with cybernetic ‘smart
missiles,’ negative feedback will give clues to the location of the target. The future is
teleonomic, so failure is simply a course correction in the general direction of success.” The
following story illustrates how failure can lead to success.
No Failure, Only Feedback
Robin’s parents had disowned her several weeks prior to her coming to see me. Robin grew
up in a very controlling family. When she went away to college, she developed problems with
anorexic behavior and panic attacks. Recently she had been plagued with memories of bad
experiences from her childhood. During our first session, I said very little. I listened as she told
me her story. I suggested an assignment of writing down the memories as they came to her and
bringing those to the next session.
In our second session, as we looked through the record of her memories, the clear theme was
fear. She feared disappointing her parents, being a failure and being abandoned. She heard two
voices in her head; one voice told her that she was going to fail, and the other voice told her that
everything would be okay. These voices created anxiety and instigated a need to flee. The result
was a panic attack.
I focused on her desire to run away and asked what would happen if every time she began
this series—feeling afraid, hearing the voices and wanting to run away—she would mentally
hide behind a thick piece of plate glass until the fear subsided. We experimented with Robin
focusing on several of the memories that had caused panic attacks. As she went through feeling
afraid, hearing the voices and reaching the point of wanting to run away, she would mentally
hide behind the plate glass. As she sat in my office, this procedure worked; she was able to calm
down and remain calm rather than experiencing a panic attack. Robin felt confident that this
would work and promised to use it each time she began to feel afraid.
When Robin came in the next week, she was discouraged because, even though the
technique had worked in my office, it had not worked outside. She had experienced several
panic attacks during the week.

LOCLBus Ltd are a bus operator in the East of England, in the UK. The presentation topic you choose will be an actual group (business to business (B2B) sale presentation at the end of the academic term.
Form yourself into a group of 5 students. Decide on a particular selling organization and then plan to make a sales presentation based on their products/services.
Make sure the company you choose for your sale presentation are into professional selling (have personal selling practices)
Do your research and learn about their personal selling practices.
Presentation Team listing/choice of selling organization is to be submitted to your professor by Monday 2/24.
Students must prepare a 15-20 minutes sales presentation based on a chosen product or service from a personal selling organization of their choice. Students are encouraged to apply as much as possible the approaches, strategies and techniques taught in the course.
The effective sales presentation is built with a strategic plan. Every step of the sale, from the approach to servicing the sale, is carefully planned in advance.
This presentation will account for 10 percent of your final grade. Your team will be notified on your presentation schedule by your professor.

- 1. Relpy to discussion questions: 1. Social influence is a change in behavior caused by real or imagined pressure. Social influence differs from persuasion because persuasion is the change in attitudes and not necessarily behavior. The three primary categories of social influence are: conformity, compliance, and obedience. Choose one category then discuss an instance you were affected by it. Could you prevent it from happening now? Why or why not? 2. I have had to change my attitude many times in my life. One example of a time that was really difficult for me to change my attitude was when I was faced with the fact that my family had to move back to a city near my hometown, that we had previously lived in, that I really disliked. The reason we had to move back was due to a job loss in our current area. A slow economy made it very hard for my husband to find a new job in our current area and in other more desirable areas. My husband was the main provider in our family at the time, because I was a stay at home mom taking care of very young kids. My husband finally was able to land a job after trying very hard for over 5 months. He had been unemployed the entire 5 months and it was getting really scary trying to take care of our family at that point. The job he was able to land was back in the area we had previously lived that I disliked very much. I literally moved back there kicking and screaming, but I knew how hard my husband had tried and that we had literally no other options. That didn’t stop me from feeling very negative and internally having a very bad attitude. I had to learn to focus on the things I was thankful for in order to get my attitude to change. The factors that kept me from changing my attitude sooner were
- 2. seeing all the negatives instead of the positives involved in the situation. I found myself totally focused in on the negatives for the longest time. After learning a big lesson from that situation, I would put that knowledge to use when trying to help others change their attitude. I would work to help them see all the positives and all the good that could come out of the situation rather than dwelling on the negatives.
